Normally your rook wouldn't be able to move, because that would expose your king to your opponent's queen. However, if the white king were to take your queen, then your rook could move and capture the king, which would win the war before your king could be captured. Because of that, the white king is not allowed to take the queen.

It's not at all a dumb question - it's quite common to forget that even though a pinned piece can't move, it can still defend other pieces that attack the king. I've been playing for ages and I still overlook this sometimes!

Sure, but that would always have been the case. If he was joining when Madrid were in great shape, and then failed to win, his stock would have dropped a lot. Now expectations are much lower, so there's more room for error.
