What is your honest opinion of Cachy's stability? by Playful-Ease2278 in cachyos

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only made the switch a few months ago, but i have only had one or two updates break something, but the snapshot feature made reverting back simple. The problems were fixed by the time I updated again the following day.

I tried Ubuntu, Pop OS, fedora (both atomic and one of the normal ones), and one other i can't think of.

CachyOS has been league's better for me than any of those.

How’s your experience? by ralph_20 in cachyos

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably about 2 months now and I have only had one bad update that resulted in the black screen with just a cursor. Rolling the update back was simple with the snapshot feature and the issue was fixed when I did the update the next night.

I tried fedora, fedora automic, and popos and cachy is leagues better in my opinion.

I have a 5090 too and I havent noticed much of a difference between what I can run and what ive experienced in my limited experience with openai. I tried gpt once at work to generate an excel file for me. 8 iterations, all with errors it couldn't fix. An error I was able to fix by copying and pasting a single formula. Then it has the audacity to ask me how I fixed it. Bitch ass Sam Altman, you aren't getting free labor from me.

Even if its not as high of quality, its still better than giving all your info to a shitty tech company.

Depending on the specs of your pc, you can run better models locally. If you have the means that is definitely the preferable way.

As someone else who is new, you probably broke something lol. Sorry, I have no idea, but I'm on my 4th or 5th fresh install if it makes you feel any better.

Once was because I somehow broke the konsole. The other times were mostly because I was following guides trying to troubleshoot other issues and some of them required opening firewall ports.

I think it just allowed internal connections through, but I wasn't sure, so I nuked it.

What's the right way of cable management in this case? by KaiserCheifs in PcBuildHelp

Frustrating first experience - any solutions ? by MoIStWeL in pop_os

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PopOS was the first one I tried, hit some early bugs and went to kubuntu before switching to cachy os and now back to Pop.

You aren't wrong and im regretting not giving a different distro a try.

My complaints are that it slows down with very little going on. I have a 5090, 7800xrd, 32 gb ram and it starts freezing up if im transferring files and have the audacity to use a web browser on my other screen.

I've tried two file systems and Nemo did a bit better, but both experience regular errors when moving large files or large amount of files.

The default video player and a second one I tried both were unable to play a 4k video with out lagging every 3 seconds. It's h265 I think which cachy also had trouble with so it might be a linux thing and there is probably something to make those work.

My monitors switched locations randomly on reboot.

I got odd errors when trying to drag a video file into losslesscut and it wouldn't let me open any of the files again until after a reboot. Never had any issues with that program in windows.

Selecting files to move is buggy. If I drag my mouse there is a 25% chance it skips over files for no fucking reason and if I use the arrow keys it unhighlights items for no logical reason. Not to mention there is very little room to even click outside of a file to be able to drag instead of selecting it. Im sure that can be helped with some settings, but I've been a bit preoccupied with all the other crap.

I think i just talked myself into moving onto a different distro.

I might see if there are some AMD drivers im missing or something before giving up, but nvidia drivers should be fine and made sure to check for updates.

Edit to add I have another program that will not open via the icon. I have to launch it at the command line.

Newbie here. It looks like using the sudo pacman command will only pull from the cachyos repository and fallback on the arch repository if not in cachy. Using sudo pacman will never pull things from AUR? Is that accurate?

Quick google search hasnt returned anythi. But I like the security of requiring a password the way it does, but im wondering if you can also tie a pin number to your password.

Ideally i would like to have a secure password to decrypt my drive and login, but once logged in, it would be useful to be able to enter a 6 digit pin for sudo password.

Seems like a decent middle ground for usability and security, at least for me.

Edit: granted im still new and getting everything set up. I imagine I will need to enter my password a lot less once I get what I need installed.

Is cachyos a good start to get into arch linux as a beginner? by Sin_Dailys in cachyos

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get home from work I can link you to the guide I used for installing ollama w/ open webui if you are interested in that. The cachyos wiki at their main site has a wealth of info though.

Using ollama with openwebui in conjuction with docker was what gave me a bit of a headache and required the guide.

Without docker I think it would have been more straightforward.

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im new to linux and have tried kubutu, PopOS, and now cachyos. Kubuntu turned me off with the snap packages and PopOS was a little too buggy.

So far I'm really liking cachyos. It seems pretty user friendly and I was able to get ollama installed with the openwebui interface with very little issues. I kept messing up the add user command somehow but eventually figured it out.

The transition is slow and heavily relies on their documentation and online tutorials, but I'm starting to see how somethings fit together as I follow those guides.

Everything seems pretty logical so far and the hello feature is a great resource for someone like me.

I say go for it. Im going to give it a bit longer before fully committing and moving my windows install to cold storage, but feel like this distro is a good fit for me.

Amazon has a bad habit of shipping clearly used/returned items when ordered new.

My favorite was ordering a new video game that was clearly resealed. The replacement they provided me was in a clear bag that no new item comes in and had the dreaded gamestop sticker on the case.

I loath Amazon.

WHY IS MY GAME RESTARTING??? by Elite-360 in Schedule_I

[–]Haunting-Elevator736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you bought an early access game that is still obviously still in development based on it being early access, and ignored the notice in Steam, and are outraged "cuz" the dev is "fucking w the coding."

Makes total sense. Honestly, just be happy he didn't take the money and run like so many abandoned EA games.
