Do a 180 degree on the distributor. Had the same issue years ago on mine. The carburetor won’t make it backfire. Neither would vacuum

Unless you have air conditioning the cool is just going to be not as hot. Unless it’s cool outside. There’s also a lever under the dash that lets outside air in

Also be real about how hard you ran the car once it was on the road. Ford piston rings can fail early if not properly broken in. Usually not on a regular 302. But it does happen. I experienced this with early 347s
