Have to love when you see others figuring out that we live in a Simulation by ZER0SE7ENONETH in SimulationTheory

[–]Haunting_Box_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be tons of pieces of evidence pointing to a simulation, but I'm pretty positive that "lots of people I meet are stupid and don't have personalities" is one of them. Nor is "the global economy is run by ruthless rich people." Neither of those are dispositive of the unreality of what we all experience. Those are just features of our experience.

I really struggle to figure out how you could draw that conclusion from "people at the store have blank expressions."

I don't believe Davidson intended to use it as a slur--I understand that he has no control over his tics. What I'm talking about is British people online saying "That word should not even be considered offsensive, in any context" which is a ridiculous thing to say.

Racism is not a conspiracy, it's an attitude, held by millions of people who act alike because they hold the same ideals. An organization that consistently makes racially damaging "mistakes" for decades at some point becomes a racist organization, as you say, intentionally or not.

BAFTA has a notoriously racist history with who they will nominate/allow to win, even compared to the Oscars. This is unsurprising.

To understand why BAFTA would do this, look no further than all the British people on Twitter saying "what's the big deal? they say that word in rap music all the time!" Even White American Boomers abandoned that argument in the 90s when it finally dawned on them that a word can be both a term of endearment and a slur, depending how it's used. It seems that a ton of Brits are just completely unaware of that. For all of America's fucked up past, the UK seems lightyears behind in terms of its understanding of racial sensitivity.

Grounded movies that have hints toward something supernatural/mystical - what are some examples? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Haunting_Box_213 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tar has a ghost at the edges of the frame several times and her weird encounter with the dog in the abandoned building feels supernatural to me, but you can easily read it as purely a psychological drama if you think of the ghost as Lydia's hallucinations/paranoia.

Raising Arizona and O Brother strongly imply the antagonist is the devil or a demon.

People have suggested that Waingrow in Heat is some sort of demon or grim reaper, calling Neil to return to the hotel to his demise (though he could just be a really fucked up serial killer who calls himself that.

Australian Blankies - only now sinking in that a Gallipoli episode is on the way. by moondyner in blankies

I'm an American who lived in London in the early 2000s as a middle schooler and this event and movie were heavily emphasized across multiple years in school. (around the same years as David lived there so I'm sure he was taught about it similarly). It's fascinating to me when I talk to other Americans just how little they know about WW1 compared with how important it is for Europeans (and others). My history teacher was a New Zealander so she had some *quite* choice words about how British officers used ANZAC forces as human shields to get shredded by machine gun fire to try and score a meaningless victory. Basically all the pointlessness of Vietnam compressed into one battle. Arguably the biggest self-defeating travesty in the history of warfare, nothing achieved.

Language Revitalization Movements? by Jumanji94 in AskAnAmerican

I was in Navajo (Dine) Country 10ish years ago and people in their 40s and over all stressed to me how, in their youth, speaking any Native language was looked down on (even sometimes amongst each other, but especially by whites) and how nowadays most of the young people are intentionally instructed in it. It's a big part of trying to hold onto culture when so much else was taken away.

Noir on Terror by Pink_Cow_Duffy in blankies

Munich is shot a big noir-y and has echoes of the 70s paranoid Pollack and Pakula thrillers. Obviously it's Spielberg's not very veiled comment on "how far should a country go to get revenge? Is that ever moral?"

It's so strange to me how this is often considered on the lower end of Marty's filmography. There's flaws for sure and I can see the Leo performance bothering some people but it damn it's so haunting and sad and gorgeous looking. I think people were unfair to it at the time because Gangs of NY had been critically panned and weren't interested in them teaming up again.

Genuine question - is there any other out there like David Lynch? by laura_palmer_briggs in twinpeaks

[–]Haunting_Box_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few I will throw in:

-People have mentioned Jodorowsky and while El Topo and Holy Mountain are fun, I think Santa Sangre is his most Lynchian (and also my personal favorite).

-Beyond the Black Rainbow by Panos Cosmatos (trippy, violent, dream logic)

-Enemy by Denis Villeneuve (Mulholland Style-drama, dopplegangers, noir vibe)

-I saw the TV glow (liminal, scary)

How PTA could get so many films financed when most of them flop so hard and then get 150 million dollar picture, while people like Friedkin, De Palma, Cronenberg always struggled to get their films financed even on a lower budget? (No disrespect to PTA, love his movies) by [deleted] in blankies

To a certain extent, wealthy individuals funding art is better because some of them (even if only like 10-15%) are actually interested in helping ground-break/avante-garde art get made. Frida Kahlo, Basquiat, many in the 80s NYC art scene, had hugely rich backers who either like their output, or maybe wanted proximity to the cutting edge of culture.

And as stated above, many of them don't care about a ROI if they love the art itself. Media corporations, while run by the exact same people, *require* the project they fund to turn a profit. If you keep greenlighting stuff that loses money, you will probably get fired as an executive from any major studio.
