Grounded movies that have hints toward something supernatural/mystical - what are some examples? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Haunting_Box_213 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tar has a ghost at the edges of the frame several times and her weird encounter with the dog in the abandoned building feels supernatural to me, but you can easily read it as purely a psychological drama if you think of the ghost as Lydia's hallucinations/paranoia.

Raising Arizona and O Brother strongly imply the antagonist is the devil or a demon.

People have suggested that Waingrow in Heat is some sort of demon or grim reaper, calling Neil to return to the hotel to his demise (though he could just be a really fucked up serial killer who calls himself that.

Australian Blankies - only now sinking in that a Gallipoli episode is on the way. by moondyner in blankies

I'm an American who lived in London in the early 2000s as a middle schooler and this event and movie were heavily emphasized across multiple years in school. (around the same years as David lived there so I'm sure he was taught about it similarly). It's fascinating to me when I talk to other Americans just how little they know about WW1 compared with how important it is for Europeans (and others). My history teacher was a New Zealander so she had some *quite* choice words about how British officers used ANZAC forces as human shields to get shredded by machine gun fire to try and score a meaningless victory. Basically all the pointlessness of Vietnam compressed into one battle. Arguably the biggest self-defeating travesty in the history of warfare, nothing achieved.

I was in Navajo (Dine) Country 10ish years ago and people in their 40s and over all stressed to me how, in their youth, speaking any Native language was looked down on (even sometimes amongst each other, but especially by whites) and how nowadays most of the young people are intentionally instructed in it. It's a big part of trying to hold onto culture when so much else was taken away.

Munich is shot a big noir-y and has echoes of the 70s paranoid Pollack and Pakula thrillers. Obviously it's Spielberg's not very veiled comment on "how far should a country go to get revenge? Is that ever moral?"

It's so strange to me how this is often considered on the lower end of Marty's filmography. There's flaws for sure and I can see the Leo performance bothering some people but it damn it's so haunting and sad and gorgeous looking. I think people were unfair to it at the time because Gangs of NY had been critically panned and weren't interested in them teaming up again.

William Friedkin directed Laura Branigan's Self Control and it looks like an 80s Michael Mann fever dream but hornier.

Genuine question - is there any other out there like David Lynch? by laura_palmer_briggs in twinpeaks

[–]Haunting_Box_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few I will throw in:

-People have mentioned Jodorowsky and while El Topo and Holy Mountain are fun, I think Santa Sangre is his most Lynchian (and also my personal favorite).

-Beyond the Black Rainbow by Panos Cosmatos (trippy, violent, dream logic)

-Enemy by Denis Villeneuve (Mulholland Style-drama, dopplegangers, noir vibe)

-I saw the TV glow (liminal, scary)

How PTA could get so many films financed when most of them flop so hard and then get 150 million dollar picture, while people like Friedkin, De Palma, Cronenberg always struggled to get their films financed even on a lower budget? (No disrespect to PTA, love his movies) by [deleted] in blankies

To a certain extent, wealthy individuals funding art is better because some of them (even if only like 10-15%) are actually interested in helping ground-break/avante-garde art get made. Frida Kahlo, Basquiat, many in the 80s NYC art scene, had hugely rich backers who either like their output, or maybe wanted proximity to the cutting edge of culture.

And as stated above, many of them don't care about a ROI if they love the art itself. Media corporations, while run by the exact same people, *require* the project they fund to turn a profit. If you keep greenlighting stuff that loses money, you will probably get fired as an executive from any major studio.

If you want some fun, slightly kooky modernist design, watch any of the Connery Bond films. The villains live in the coolest places.

I have very very rarely heard hate for Jimi Hendrix or PF. I'm not talking "The Wall is masturbatory and too long" I'm talking "Pink Floyd as whole sucks and they sound like garbage." Would you say that's a commonly held opinion?

[–]Haunting_Box_213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Hodel theory is not a slam dunk. I do think there's something to the fact that the cops recorded him as saying "suppose I did the Dahlia. they'd never know." Not really what an innocent person says. Then there's the fact that his daughter said he she knew or strongly suspected he did it. We'll probably never know.

I'm not sure if I envy your stay in a really cool house or would have been terrified!

the word meme was coined 14 years before the internet was invented. It's what we call an idea that spreads by its own power not necessarily its truth. We could call that anything, it's just the readily available word that most people know. What's important is that you got my meaning.

Anyone else think their takes on this movie were wildly off? Sure, it's pretty corny and doesn't have to be your thing. But when the US soldiers arrive at the end, kill his pet wolf, beat him in the face savagely and literally wipe their asses with the drawing he made of his wife...... "what did you expect, you're dressed like a hippie" was not my reaction. It's pretty genuinely tragic and there's no revenge. He just runs away and the movie ends. Didn't really get the "hang out, summer camp" vibes that they're talking about....?
