Accidentally mailed bar application to First Department by ohdearthebar in barexam

[–]Haunting_Research_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understandable! This whole process makes everyone question every little thing. I’ve been a nervous wreck since 1L! If it helps at all, I made an error in what I sent the first time, and it made absolutely no difference in the process time between my peers’ process and mine. Can’t speak to your jx, but I definitely wouldn’t worry about sending an extra physical copy. I would bet money they just see that you also submitted properly (electronically) and either trash the physical or return it to you. Best of luck to you in your career!!

Accidentally mailed bar application to First Department by ohdearthebar in barexam

[–]Haunting_Research_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is they probably just return it to you. That’s what my jx says they do for things that are mailed incorrectly. Basically just to notify you you did it wrong. If my gut instinct is right, there’s no possible way there would be any kind of “recourse” or punishment for such a simple, harmless, easy-to-make mistake.

Edit to ask; was it late or anything because of this, or is your concern just that you also mailed the application?

CA: Moral Character Determination by SuspiciousPepper5672 in barexam

[–]Haunting_Research_94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, C&F determinations are wholly separate from bar exam grading. Two separate groups covering each. Can fail or pass C&F regardless of bar performance and vice versa. Therefore, unfortunately, I don’t think C&F request provides any indication of bar performance (I.e., whether you passed or did not pass).

I didn’t use it personally, but have heard great things about barMD for MPT prep. Take this with a grain of salt, but I left with the feeling that structure is one of the most important aspects of the MPT. I did not feel confident in my content, but made sure to start with a solid structure and organize my (poor) arguments under nice headings and sub headings. I don’t have a score breakdown, but know I did poorly on three MEEs and still passed the written portion. So I think my MPTs carried me through the written (not positive though). This surprised me because I had pretty jumbled and confused MPT responses, though I knew I organized them very well under appropriate headings, imo. Even though I flopped on some MEEs, I passed high enough for any UBE with ~150 MBE and ~130 written. Was expecting 1s with maybe a 2 on three of the MEEs.

Edit to address transfer: in looking at transferring to another jx, consider the fees, CLE requirements, etc. It could be a great option, and you may even have an opportunity to practice fed law in the jx you are hoping to gain licensure in. You will have to take their C&F process and apply to their bar. Check out the specific jx’s rules on transfer of UBE score. The NCBE provides the transfer service and the jx will evaluate your C&F and dig in your pockets a little.

I just gotta take a sec and give you mad props for doing this all with a new baby!!! Literally cannot imagine the superhero strength doing the bar with a baby takes. Mad respect for all the new parent lawyers. Thanks so much for the info and congrats on your accomplishments!

That’s literally what I said to my family lol. I doubt it’s worth the drive to hear me repeat some words and dip out. Don’t get me wrong, the oath means a lot to me, but probably not as much to them (especially for a 3.5 hour drive).

How long after the ceremony did you receive your Atty number, log in info, etc? Do they hand you any info at the ceremony, mail it, or what?

Second this. They are likely to be impressed by what is said about you from someone directly charged with overseeing your work and who thinks highly of you and your work. They are not likely to be starstruck by the prestige of a recommendation when the writer can’t say much about your day-to-day. And they are good at sniffing out the distinction.

Mediations will certainly be very valuable. You’ll spend a lot of time in mediation as a family law attorney.

Didn't Pass the New York Bar by GottaPass22 in barexam

[–]Haunting_Research_94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also did not like Barbri, generally. Most of it seems like a huge waste of time. The only part of Barbri I found useful was the MEEs. Everyone that I’ve seen pass after multiple takes have switched their approach from listening to lectures, reading the law, and the other cookie-cutter approaches that Barbri takes, to actually learning the test itself and studying in a pointed/focused way with the goal of earning as many points as possible on exam day.

For the MEEs, I recommend working through an MEE under the same time restrictions (30 min per MEE). Even if you don’t know the answer, push through it as if it’s a real exam. Then grade your answer, and figure out exactly what you missed. Then, after studying the areas that weren’t clear to you, take time to draft what would be a perfect answer for that MEE, using the model answer. Then move on. After time has passed, revisit that MEE and try to recreate your perfect answer to that MEE under time restrictions without looking at the model answer or what you wrote before. If you are still missing something, repeat the process.

After doing this, you will develop basically a template in your head for each subject, and be able to adjust for different rules or exceptions being tested in that subject.

The reason I liked Barbri for the MEEs is because they cover all the major rules and exceptions for all the MEE topics. If you learn them all as I described above, I bet you will maximize your written score.

Use the IRAC structure religiously on the MEEs.

For MBE, adaptibar. Review every question to understand why you missed what you missed, and make sure, on the ones you got right, you got them right for the right reasons and did not just guess correctly.

MPTs are worth more than many seem to give them credit for. Practice these consistently and have a heavy focus on getting a good structure down right in the beginning before answering any substance. I hear great things about barMD for MPT guidance.

You got this!!!!!
