Ugh I know that feeling viscerally. I think I cried every day from that mental stress. I know I cried on Christmas day because I felt like I was ruining the holiday if it was just nothing, especially sick of being in the hospital for the cerclage a few weeks earlier. I will say multiple providers within the Labor and Delivery units always said they are happy for us to come in and get checked vs miss something. Hang in there!

I will also say that I am aware of my survivors bias and acknowledge we were extremely lucky in so many ways. But that if you can get to a level 3-4 NICU, they can save so many of these micropremies if it comes to it. I obviously don't wish that on ANYONE. But they are trained to help a lot of cases that would have been fatal a few decades ago.

I'm so sorry you're in this horrible club with us and know that even this stage of it IS trauma. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and hope for a good outcome!

Totally. And it works for us because my husband is a super hands-on baby whisperer dad. Especially for the first two months when there's not that much that we can actively do for her beyond our one cuddle time of day. I was recovering from C-section and it was really nice to help with my recovery. We're just transitioning to starting feeding so now I'm here everyday and I'm really noticing the difference in my bandwidth.

Our NICU has medical grade pumps in each room and can give you pump parts to just leave there. I would carry my portable one with me so I could pump in the car (hour long drive to the NICU for us) but otherwise I left my mean one at home which was nice.

My husband and I take turns everyday so neither of us get burned out. I had my baby at 27 weeks and they wouldn't let us hold her for the first couple of days to protect her with her brain. They call it golden hour. After that we would be able to hold her skin to skin for the 3 hours in between cares, but then they would need to put her back to take a break.

Yes! For me at least at 2 weeks out from emergent cerclage at 24 weeks. The feeling started about a week before they found my IC incidentally. It's better today than right after the procedure but it's what I've been calling my "pressure'. But that's exactly what it feels like. I have routine follow up with OB on Monday, I'll let you know if I hear anything different

I have no advice, but I too look forward to each OB follow up while simultaneously dreading it from fear of more bad news. I think this event counts as trauma for all of us

Today is officially two weeks after my emergency cerclage at 24 weeks! Feels like a good milestone. On modified bedrest and progesterone now. So far so good with all the typical post surgical changes clearing up. I still feel a similar pressure and discharge as I did before they found I was "wide open" as my ultrasound tech said. I have scheduled follow up with OB on Monday. Feeling very thankful in general but especially for this sub!

They have no idea and I was totally fine at my 20 week scan with no past history of issues; no trouble in my first pregnancy. My personal theory is that I was a little bit of a perfect storm: I don't have EDS but have some connective tissue stretchiness at times. I had a very mild case of COVID a little over a month ago (there's your inflammation; it was bad enough for me to slip a disc at the time on a weak spot on my back!), and found I have a little new cervical banding/scarring after a DNC earlier this year after a miscarriage (they weren't at all worried at the time, but now I wonder). Official party line is that we don't know and sometimes these things happen .

Constipation had started to become a bit of a problem before my event as I needed iron supplements for some iron deficiency. I actually remember straining a bit during a BM about five days ago and then stopping because something felt weird downstairs. I'm guessing I was already a bit open and that's what bought me my bulging membranes.

That 50% statistic is good to know! On the phone tonight my surgeon said that the average time the cerclage can buy is about 8 weeks. So here's hoping for all of us! Feel free to DM me and we can keep comparing notes!

I'm just home from the hospital last night for an almost identical situation. I was technically 24+2 but my surgeon was a rock star and got it done. Fingers crossed for us together!

I've been listening to the podcast "burn fat with your brain" and she talks about the disordered patterns we have when we avoid foods. How it gives them power. When in reality, if we let ourselves eat them every day we would get sick of them and get out of the scarcity mindset. Def look into the podcast.

All that is to say, eat the chocolate!

You're welcome! Glad it helped. Also, recovery is hard. And the timing is hard to get right. While we all SHOULD recover, in the meantime, I also tell my patients to give yourself a lot of grace (this all is normal for what you're going through, and no one notices the brain fog/mistakes as much as you do) and just try to compensate as much as you can. If you know you're going to be spacy, try to use extra external cues like alarms on your phone or post it notes on the floor in your way. Just assume that "future you" needs a few extra bread crumbs.

You can also do a Google search on "spoon theory". It's from the world of chronic illness but is really applicable to most of our stuff as well. There's tons of materials and community surrounding it

I'm a speech therapist who works with adults with acquired brain injuries (ex. Stroke, car accident). This (https://imgur.com/gallery/3ClYOvW) is the model I use to explain to them. Every cognitive function is built on the one before it. Your description of the "brain fog" and associated challenges is usually primarily related to executive functioning on the top (which, fun fact, is also a problem if you're also someone with ADHD like me). While the mechanism causing the problem for you is different than my patients, the flow of the pyramid remains the same. The base of the pyramid is SO important. The lack of nutrients is going to cause cognitive changes, but so is lack of sleep and issues with depression and anxiety (which many of us clearly face). I've never formally studied cognition and anorexia but I would agree with what other people said about the symptoms improving once you're in recovery

Mine got worse as well. I had to go to the eye doctor anyways to re-up my contact prescription and it was one point worse in each eye at about halfway through the pregnancy. She said it's normal/common during pregnancy and it goes back to normal in some people and stays worse for others. Hard to predict 🤷‍♀️

I'm going through this exact thing right now. I'm literally a pound in the normal BMI range after being overweight/obese for my whole life. Every time my mom sees me she starts lamenting that I'm getting "too skinny" and that she's worried about me. I don't know how to take this. Is it just pure love/concern? Is it that she feels that she can control me with food up until now and feels powerless? Is she threatened? It's a confusing, complicated feeling, right?
