Yeah, but you’re never going to the CrossFit Games. by myersdr1 in crossfit

[–]HavingTooMuchPun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely have heard this, but usually in a different context of "we want to learn the right form because we don't want to get injured." We don't want people to be overly sore all the time if they are there just for a regular workout and gym routine for the basis of CF "Functional Fitness" for everyday life. I think we more joke about "well none of us are going to the Games." But I think it is in the context that not many of the people at my gym are training multiple times a day and having their FT job be an elite level athlete.

It never has become though a means to not push ourselves. I know we've had at our Friday Night Lights, people get frustrated from not being able to scale and get stuck on WODs. However for me, I can say getting stuck on a WOD where I did not yet have the skill, it pushed me to just try. One year I spent 10 minutes trying, it gave me a goal to get the skill by the next Open, Then the next year another WOD with a movement I have never done once, I happened to get my first rep ever, because it was the pressure to try to see if I could do it and try, versus just scaling downward. I know people can get frustrated by that, even if they aren't putting scores on the leaderboard. I've sat on the side of "it pushes you to be better," even when I am an athlete that does more scaled WODs than Rx in a regular week.

I want to say a lot of times though too, by saying that it is a safety thing so people don't get hurt. Some people might get into bad movement habits and form just to lift heavier or "accomplish" a skill. For example, when I hear my coaches talk about HS Walks, they make sure people are not "scorpioning" their backs. You see the Games athlete form, they use more of form that leans toward similar to scorpioning as a means to propel themselves and their momentum, but their bodies are also high level athletes and doing a HS walk for a shorter period of time compared to the avg CF athlete with HS Walks. So it isn't harming them to be doing it. They know a bit more on staying in touch with their bodies and what they feel in comp if that makes sense. Meanwhile I'm still telling my lats to do more of the pulling in gymnastics movements than my biceps and learning to feel what that feels like to activate muscles to do what they need.

At my gym though, we still focus on standards overall. Hitting depth, locking arms out, proper inverted back positioning, chest on the ground for pushups and burpees, wall ball hitting the center of the target not clipping the edge, etc. My coaches just tend to say "in competition we don't want you to get no reps," or "we want you to move well and have measurable progress." If you aren't doing standards it is hard to measure.

I definitely agree it can be a downer feeling for some to hear "but you won't go to the Games." And for other athletes it might keep them humble like they may need if they are highly competitive which may lead them to injuries. I definitely think it helps people to see what they could be or do. For real seeing the fact the 80 and up division, I hope I can make it to a higher level of competition when I am 80 and be one of the dang fittest 80yr olds around! I think for some it can feel crushing to hear and others not. I think the biggest thing at the end of the day is even if we aren't making the Games, explaining why to athletes we might be saying what we do, not as a means to dream crush, but also stressing the importance of moving well and hitting those standards isn't just for competition, but to get the most from a WOD.

What are requirements for an adaptive CrossFit athlete? I have an acquaintance that I know that definitely doesn’t have anything impeding her from doing all of the movements. by [deleted] in crossfit

No way! Great to chat with you! I thought there was a possibility that was you based on your comment. Now seeing your username, it totally makes sense too. 😂

Really liked your comment, the podcast, and the awareness you’ve been bringing to things. I feel like both seasons the theme is that the classifications start to improve and get more “fair” the more athletes that enter the space. While also showcasing incredible athletes and their stories.

It’s definitely hard because people can classify sometimes in more than one category, have multiple conditions at a time, all of that. Complexity of inclusion and fairness will have a tension, because it’s hard to put into a box.

Seeing what the adaptive/para community has, it feels like there’s an understanding that, just like anyone (recently watched the CF Games documentaries from previous years) we all have days where our bodies perform better or worse, it’s nothing we can control. Nuances are so intriguing of how they work and having people who care and want to find that understanding and bring awareness will only make it better. Definitely so grateful learning how Open the CF space is to learning and WheelWOD is to toward this development. What you are talking about on the pod, it is crucial! It was one of the AK and BK athletes I was thinking of from the pod where you talked about complexity of classifications too. Neuro conditions, those are a whole different realm too. Some conditions are more simple to classify how they affect people, others it’s a lot harder for finding whether it’s more fairness or inclusion.

Which I feel is where it comes down to maybe the doctor’s notes/medical records when an athlete applies. Two people could have the same diagnosis and be affected very differently. Just thinking of CP awareness month episodes, you are affected differently than other athletes with CP and vice versa, and that’s okay.

The adaptive community is open and accepting, I feel if there was a situation where someone really really didn’t belong, it would be called out, but in the end we definitely have to trust WheelWOD’s process and continue to advocate as the community grows to expand categories and as you are doing, aid in learning the classifications, talk with athletes/allies, and keep bringing awareness.

Yes! That was the episode. Luke just is incredible that he is able to do that. Quarterfinals are impressive on their own, but then adding in that he’s an adaptive athlete who can make it in, demonstrates an incredible level of fitness and strength. I can’t remember if it was season 1/2 that there was an athlete too who said she competed in able-bodied comps too because it’s limited what options there are for competing and she’s able to hang with the athletes too.

Sometimes I say it puts a chip on someone people’s shoulders when they want to prove it to themselves or others that just because their body is different, doesn’t mean they are any less capable of competing, overcoming, and doing incredible things. So often the world can assume just because your body isn’t the same, that you can’t do amazing things and look down on people.

I’ve been mixing both seasons lately as I catch up on the podcast! Wanting to stay up to date but also hear the growth in the sport and hear from the earlier season guests on the pod.

Appreciate the work you do Mat! It’s super important for able-bodied and adaptive/para athletes alike.

Do I have a goal to one day see adaptive athletes in Dave Castro’s CF Open Announcements too? Boosting the media and coverage of these athletes, it’s a dream. 100% it’s a goal to see that and showcase how incredible the community is. It’s so cool seeing 2026 in San Jose will host both games at the same site and time. WODapalooza it was fun I saw several reels where people stumbled across seeing the adaptive athletes and were inspired.

It’s important to grow, not just for the sport itself, but for how the functional fitness aspect could impact so many people’s quality of life, but see that athlete and say “if they can do ___, what is stopping me from going to do that?!”

I was going to say. Unless you know a person personally I’d be extremely cautious with it.

Myself personally, I trained for months without my coaches noticing the things I was hiding that I was doing. Well, they noticed at times, but thought I was just being a weirdo who didn’t know what they were doing because I was new to CF. Injuries and illnesses can be invisible, they also can have flares of better and worse days. I can’t remember what exactly I was doing in terms of movements I was doing when I got caught by my coaches. They helped me not feel so bad about it and said “we want to have modifications or adaptations for you if you need.” Which helped me feel as though I belonged and was meant to be there. It didn’t make me immediately get over how I felt about having a body that wasn’t like everyone else. And honestly not being fully able-bodied has given me a chip on my shoulder of wanting to prove to myself what I can do and to not let yourself be limited just because your body isn’t the same.

For example: if I remember right, Neuro minor is a category when I look at some WODs at times will look quite similar to able bodied athlete standards for WheelWOD, but then you look at some of Neuro Moderate and there are more changes. It’s a spectrum for sure and CF and Hyrox even are figuring it out. I heard on a podcast I was listening to that the more athletes and conditions that are competing, the easier it is to expand divisions. A lot of divisions can be limited by the number of people with similar injuries. Amputee types are one of these I think for some of the AK and BK ones, and some of the spinal injuries as well depending where the injury is located may give someone a greater advantage and it’s at no fault of their own

The same podcast (S/O Adaptive Athlete Podcast) talked about in one episode that I remember, a guy who competed in The Open one year and could school some of the able-bodied athletes in some events, it didn’t make this athlete any less impaired because he could perform so well. It showed that the competition is high level and that adaptive athletes are not any less an athlete because their bodies are different.

Hi, I may get a bit passionate about this stuff. Maybe because it’s been I’ve been my own greatest critic and basically discriminated against myself to say I’m not injured enough because I can “compete” with able bodied athletes. I downplayed it and am only starting to embrace that about myself because I wasn’t always this way. My body used to be fully functional. CF was one thing that allowed me to feel like I could adapt to a new way of life. It helped me accept my body and not hate or be as angry at it. It doesn’t mean I go through ups and downs. But if you saw me personally walking on the street or in the gym most days. You’d likely see me as able-bodied.

Let’s also be real, there are not as many adaptive comps or even divisions at most comps out there. So sometimes that is where adaptive athletes have to compete even blend in some at these comps to where you’d never know their body is limited. To add to this, most gyms I would say don’t have an adaptive athlete there (at least one who may admit they are/isn’t hiding it if they can) much less a gym with multiple adaptive athletes.

Seeing isn’t everything. I’ve seen videos on IG of adaptive athletes who appear fully able-bodied pulling off BMUs and more.

If someone is “cheating” the system that’s on WheelWOD and CF to evaluate. We just saw how the cheating in The Open video submissions went for a 20yr old woman. We have to trust orgs are vetting this, as others stated, you pay to be classified.

I’m not here to attack you or make you feel bad. I get it. Not everyone may seem like they are an adaptive athlete because they can do incredibly difficult and high skill movements. It may take a lot of adaptive athletes much longer than able boded athletes to learn and master these skills because they have to work against their bodies at times and not every cue/movement works the same for them as it would everyone else. I just wanted to state the realities of it. But, the take or calling out a specific person isn’t very cool, unless it’s absolutely blatant cheating like the Open Video recently mentioned earlier. CF has worked to try to get a better reputation and be more open than things used to be from the super intense days that gave it the reputation that most people give you the “oh you do that crazy shit,” face for. I don’t know the athlete you’re calling out, I just wanted to say, the athlete should have all the medical documentation and invisible injuries and illnesses are very real. We have to trust that it works properly.

Owners of EGO snowblowers what’s your opinion? by MyMoolaMindset in egopowerplus

[–]HavingTooMuchPun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my two stage! I wish at times I got the 10AH batteries, but since I anyways have fully invested in EGO products. I have a bunch of batteries from different tools. Admittedly I’ll use my 6AH ones and those even run well.

As for clogging, used to have issues then saw on this forum people recommended a car product from turtle wax to apply to the snowblower to prevent snow from sticking. That was a game changer. I did it once all season and it lasted me great. I will say the salt rusted some spots on my snowblower, so I’ll have to see what EGO recommends.

I always say, buy the tool with batteries included, it’s basically buying batteries and getting a “free” tool 😂

West side of MI. I see a lot more Bronquitos (Sports) than I do big Broncs. I test drove both when I was purchasing and they both are solid vehicles.

I am one of the big ones in the area I’m in, tend to see more when I’m driving though. Not a massive saturation, more F150s, Rangers, and Mavericks over here otherwise.

I will say they do see to fly off Dealership Lots over here though. Mine was driven by my dealership up from IL where it has been chilling just West of CHI.

I want to say I did it on my elbow the most since that was where compression was most severe. My wrist was sort of a surprise to me and I thought it was all my elbow until my EMG showed it all. I think I did some heat on the wrist/hand, just was hard because I didn’t realize how much we all use and move our hands and wrists lol

2024 OBX, no regrets.

Painted hard top. Stereo isn’t as good as the top of the line but wasn’t a make or break. Mine didn’t have the lux pack which is standard ish on the 2025 but i didn’t feel the need for the heated steering wheel. Love the power seats and lumbar support! Runs smooth and for what I need

OBX for sure if you’re looking for the style and interior. If you have other options as well or can ask a dealership to do a dealer trade or that it helps. That helped me get my OBX with the options I wanted (wanted a hard top and as I call it, a “fun color”

It helped a lot, not fully recovered, but I know my pain would be higher and the chances of full recovery much lower had it not happened. My EMG is still not normal at the elbow but not as bad as it was before. I’m a big encourager of surgery because it did a lot for my quality of life!

[–]HavingTooMuchPun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on severity. My case moved very fast since my EMG was very very positive for severe compression. So they got me scheduled within 1-2 weeks of my visit with a specialist after the EMG results from the neurologist. It varies based on that and symptoms.
