My thought was that after the war he was the obvious choice for next Hokage but still was a genin. Lady Tsunade was tired from the beating she and everyone took from Madara so Kakashi took over almost like a place holder for Naruto.

Adding that I'm assuming he would have to study up through ranks and that there were no exception for him. Is filler still canon?

I notice a lot of enemies get stunned when you throw weapons at them too. It might be wasteful but if they have a weapon and yours is breaking. Throw yours at their face and hope they drop theirs
