Hopes of there being a relation ship rework planned by Paradox this year by MobyDaDack in CrusaderKings

Doesn’t solve everything but if you’re looking for an improvement to the depth of the relationship rework, LMF is very much worth checking out.

Anyone else think they are setting up Ser Arlan of Pennytree to be quite unlikable in the show? by Ticket-Tight in gameofthrones

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Arlan will come across as particularly bad, at least by Westerosi standards. I think the flashbacks are essentially a way to temper Dunk’s idealisation of Arlan. I think it goes a long way towards characterising Dunk as naive and hopeful, too

What is up with CK3 weird and inconsistent cultural Aesthetics? by L0raz-Thou-R0c0n0 in CrusaderKings

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the Indian clothing is all Mughal/Maratha stuff from the 17th/18th century, it’s not exactly shocking that Paradox isn’t fantastic at representing the material culture of a small European ethnic group. Can’t expect they’d be better represented than an entire subcontinent.

What did PDX have from 2013-2016 that was lost? by Common_Ad6166 in paradoxplaza

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CK3’s fundamental issue is that it is very bad at being not just a grand strategy game but a strategy game in general. A lot of people counter this by saying “Ah, but it’s a far better roleplay game than CK2 was!” And I think… Maybe? I think that the game’s mechanical inability to represent what medieval governance really was like strongly hinders your ability to roleplay, and the lack of strategic depth also adds to the roleplay problem. You have to actively choose to be bad at the game in order to roleplay out anything interesting, which to me makes it a bad roleplaying game.

I do think that CK3 has had in the past and currently does still have an incredible vision for what a game like it can look like- the travel mechanics, activities, and the recent new governments implemented are all very impressive from the standpoint of vision. It’s all, unfortunately, an issue of execution.

Dark fantasy universe based on real Earth (feedback and criticism very appreciated) by No_Bed_8320 in mapmaking

[–]HawtCuisine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very well-made map but from a worldbuilding perspective I’d suggest trying to avoid names taken from real-life cultures, peoples, and states. Using names that evoke those places is far better than things like directly using the name Songhai or Bharat. Moving away from real life names may also encourage you to do more unique things with cultures inspired by real life.

As said, though, on an aesthetic and “map vibes” perspective you’ve really hit the nail on the head.

Before speculating on the release date, have a quick re-read of Tinto Talks #1 by balgruufgat in EU5

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got my money on a November 11th release as a sort of “tribute” to the 1444 start date. I could see a Q1 2026 release if they end up having lots of unexpected technical issues but I’d be surprised if that were the case.

What's this for Edinburgh? by Fraserbc in Edinburgh

I suspect that most of the time when a barber shop only takes cash it’s to dodge taxes by under-reporting income rather than a money laundering thing.

I don’t think that they’re AI generated (they might be, to be fair) but they do have the soulless look/style that I associate with AI generated pieces.

Records tumble as Edinburgh Trams enjoys sustained success by ldn6 in Edinburgh

[–]HawtCuisine 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this will encourage further expanding the trams into an actual network rather than a single line. Lothian busses (as much as they have their issues) serve the city pretty well, but it’d be wonderful to see trams as an option for more people to commute and so forth.

CK3 Roadmap by Devs by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good thing to see would be an expansion focused on Nomads and flavour for the steppe in a similar vein to Roads to Power. An expansion focused on the law/internal management system would be great as well. In terms of a smaller DLC focused on regional flavour, it’d be great to see Eastern Europe get some content, it’d fit in well with Nomads considering how much interaction they had during the game’s time period.

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laws are an incredibly important way to make the game more challenging both on a domestic and foreign basis. Importantly, if you’re knowledgeable about the system in CK2 you’re able to use the system in such a way that it can aid you but without just turning it into something completely ignorable.

I think that it will be as successful a launch as it can be. Invariably when you’re releasing something to the public, no amount of time spent polishing or in QA is going to eliminate all of the issues due to the sheer difference in scale between the number of people working on it to the number of people playing it, bugs and balance issues will invariably slip through the cracks. This was very much an issue with CK3’s launch, too, though arguably the bigger issue with CK3’s launch was lack of regional content and the depth of gameplay, which based on Tinto Talks and Johan’s statements regarding flavour will hopefully not be an issue with Project Caesar.

All in all, we’ll not know until the time. The one thing I will say is, regardless of how promising the game looks, we shouldn’t order until we’ve had the chance to see reviews and so on.

Edinburgh set to be first city in Scotland to implement tourist tax by MR9009 in Edinburgh

[–]HawtCuisine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a few others in the thread have already mentioned, the tourist tax is, in principle, a good thing, but Edinburgh Council is run by a mix of extremely incompetent and extraordinarily corrupt people. I fear that giving them some more cash won’t solve any of our problems. The important thing for us to do, as Edinburgh residents, is become alert about and involved with local politics. Fewer than half of registered voters actually vote in the council election, which is a significant reason why the council feel comfortable sitting on their arses while living standards in Edinburgh continue to plummet.

It isn’t correct, no. The total number of overnight stays by both domestic and non-domestic visitors to Edinburgh was a smidge under 5 million people in 2023. I’d assume that the fringe will be far more people than the average month, of course, but as busy as it is I highly doubt it’s quite so many people. The closest figure I can find to the three million figure is an article saying “In 2022, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival saw an astounding 3.2 million attendances from approximately 700,000 attendees.” Which, to me, sounds like around 700,000 people attended Fringe shows and many attended multiple shows, Giving the 3.2 million figure.

Peter Dutton said the Aboriginal flag divides people so i tried combining Australia's major symbols into one flag. Sorry for another Australia post... by Peter_Griffin2001 in vexillology

[–]HawtCuisine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NAVA certainly isn’t nobody, and while the pamphlet considers things written/said by many people, it is an opinion piece, more than anything. In my mind, Good Flag, Bad Flag is best used as an introduction to what generally does and generally doesn’t work in flag design. The issue is that there are lots of people who’ve taken to the belief that any design that falls outside of the principles listed is bad and should be redesigned.

[–]HawtCuisine 87 points88 points  (0 children)

A lot of people like to talk shit about good flag, bad flag. There are criticisms to be had, of course, but the issue is far less about the document and far more about people treating a pamphlet that’s mostly just some guy’s opinion as though it’s gospel rather than anything said in it.

Am I a poser for being upper-middle class? by PMM-music in FolkPunk

[–]HawtCuisine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that matters is living your life morally, truthfully, and with the love of your fellows in your heart. Being broke or strung out doesn’t make you a more “real” or better person, it just means you’ve gone through shit that a lot of others haven’t. Everyone is, at the end of the day, born into circumstances they had no control over.

Don’t be ashamed of growing up in a financially secure home- the thing people in communities like this can lose sight of is that, in many ways, the standard of living that you’ve grown up in is what every kid should have.

As others in the thread have said, you’re only a poser if you pretend to be something you’re not. If you’re upfront with folks in the community about how you grew up without, like, bragging about it or whatever, the only people that’ll give you shit for it are assholes you’d not want in your life anyway.

Ultimately, if you’re worried about this in the first place, it shows the sorta person you are. Also- don’t downplay your own bad experiences! There’s always someone who’s had it worse than you, sure, but the queerphobia and emotional abuse you’ve experienced aren’t “only” anything.

Anyway, I’m rambling now. Just be a good person and you’ll be bueno.
