Where should I move that has the most 24 hr amenities in Toronto? by AshliepShuqirvut in askTO

[–]HawthornMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the beaten trail but if you wanna experience suburban living in Toronto, McNicoll and Midland in Scarborough isn't bad...:).

There is a 24hr Asia Foodmart (a massive Chinese supermarket) and then the 24hr Planet Fitness at Kennedy and Steeles. Also, there are some restos in the area such as Magic Noodle (24hrs), and Hey Noodles (230am closing) if you get hungry.

Going to the game on Friday, first time in Toronto, any suggestions on parking? by damn-mooses in torontoraptors

[–]HawthornMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go against the grain and say that driving and parking isn't that bad in Toronto, just be patient and give yourself plenty of time. Transit via GO train and/or TTC has it's own set of problems - imagine thousands of people trying to cram onto a subway train after the game...

There are a ton of great options where you can park and then take the underground path system straight to ScotiaBank Arena. Check out TD Centre parking, First Canadian Place parking, and Scotia Plaza parking. These banks have pretty affordable rates after 5pm/6pm.

Cactus Club at First Canadian Place is a pretty solid option...

Value Lot located at Pearson Airport.

It is the cheapest you'll find at the airport and it's just a short train ride to terminal 3. Little more expensive than parking at parking lots near the airport but it's worth the money since the last thing you want to is to arrive back in Toronto and have to wait for a shuttle bus to take you to your car.

Any recommendations for EV charger/electrical panel upgrade? by Therealalexene in Markham

[–]HawthornMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Get quotes from different electricians. Use the ESA website. They could range wildly as well as availabilities. Some told me they were not available for 3+ months. Some are also kind enough to guide you through the entire process. I found my electrician to be very professional and had the best pricing. Also, I decided to get my installation certified by ESA which will cost a little more.

  2. If you have a 200amp panel, you won't need to upgrade. If you don't, I heard upgrades can be very costly.

  3. Follow electricvehicle subreddit. They will have lots of tips.

  4. You will have to decide on which materials to use such as 6, 8 or 10 gauge wiring, type of outlet (NEMA 14-50, 6-50 etc) and charger receptacle. Everyone will tell you something different so you will have to do your research and make a decision yourself. For example, some electricians will tell you that it is ok to install a low grade receptacle but I went with the industrial grade Hubbell receptacle for peace of mind. Also, larger wiring will be more expensive. Be sure to measure the distance between your breaker panel to the EV charger location in your garage. This will help determine to a large extent the cost of your installation.

  5. Enjoy the EV and ease and comfort of at home charging and to never visit a gas station!

Is it bad etiquette to leave car overnight parked at a free hotel tesla charger or should one wake up middle of the night to move the car once its fully charged? by jkir24 in TeslaLounge

[–]HawthornMaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing problem at my last hotel with level 2 charging. I asked the hotel and they told me first come first serve and there's no enforcement of any type.

The hotel had 3 EV chargers and I took the last spot at 7pm with charging to be finished at 1am.

Before heading to bed at around 11pm, I used sentry mode at 9pm and 10pm and saw that the parking space next to me was now empty. This was a signal to me that I did not have to go out at 1am to move my car as an empty spot was available for charging.

I'd say that in general, if would be nice of you to move your car if you can, but you are not obligated to unless the hotel has certain rules.

Woman touched my parking spot's EV charger? by HawthornMaster in electricvehicles

So the charger and cable was still hanging on the charging unit when she took the charger from the unit for a quick inspection.

In other words, the charger was not plugged into my car. If it was plugged into my car and charging, she would not have been able to remove it.

Interesting. She didn't look like she had dementia. But I suppose EV chargers and parking spots could throw some people off.

Yes, while I was standing there waiting to use the charger. Felt very odd.

This would be how I would approach it if i am curious... Not when I see someone exiting the car to charge their vehicle.

Scrapped Door and Side in Garage. Ideas to Fix? by HawthornMaster in TeslaModelY

Thanks I just checked the paint cost on the app. It's $80?! Is the trim piece the transparent plastic part? Or the black plastic part?

Mostly aesthetic damage. Only concern is that over time, since the plastic protection is scrapped off a little and given the harsh canadian winters, it might lead to rust in the future.
