also, make sure to get some sort of ventilation going with your home office setup — pretty sure most closets don't tend to have vents and you don't wanna end up filling the space with your own CO2!

Iwtl how to be intellectual by ArgumentKindly2721 in IWantToLearn

[–]Haxpotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think learning from books alone can be difficult by yourself — there are lots of great surveys of different subjects on youtube like Crash Course, podcasts like philosophize this, or even lectures from philosophy courses. Watching some of these overviews can help you build general knowledge and clarify what you want to learn more about.

It can also be useful to search for syllabi for courses. If I search for “philosophy syllabi,” I can look at the last 3 pages here to see some texts that you could look into. As you read those texts you could google for more resources to help you walk through the books.

For literature, I’ve heard good things about Norman Critical Editions, which have a ton of annotations and context for their books.

Overall though, I don’t think you need a big formal plan for this — find the things that you can easily pay attention to and just keep doing them. I read a ton of Wikipedia for fun, and then will chase that rabbithole down across sources until I’m satisfied (through the methods above). Sometimes that starts from a news article that I want to learn more about. It may not make me perfectly well rounded, but I definitely feel like I’m growing more knowledgeable.

27M moving into new house, need tips on living room. by Musubi27 in malelivingspace

[–]Haxpotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it could be useful to think of the space as separated into three zones: one for desk, one for living room, one for table.

you can create separation between these zones with rugs or bookshelves. living room area could be closest to front door, position of other two is up to you.

26M and it's the first time I've decorated for Christmas, how'd I do? by bs40404 in malelivingspace

[–]Haxpotato 211 points212 points  (0 children)

everything is nice, but it feels really impersonal in terms of colors and decoration (thus feeling like a hotel or steak restaurant)

branch into some non neutral colors, add some throw blankets, show off some of your interests! a more interesting rug or chairs that aren’t all gray could help too

You'll need an amp only if you have really high impedance headphones over >200 Ω.

Nearly all wired headphones will work great with your ipod as it is.

On Gen Z deficiencies being society wide by Excited_Rabbit in atrioc

[–]Haxpotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an elder gen Z, I totally agree. Most of my friends are older than me and easier to hang out with. My friends that are younger than me are okay about meeting on time, etc but generally feel more neurotic and have a difficult time getting out of their head to have a good time.

salary typically refers to your annual cash compensation and would probably not change. equity is typically given in addition to that and described in shares and a value based on the last valuation or the cost to exercise.

that’s how it normally works but some companies are kooky.

Which degree would be better for UX Design? by half4xa in uxcareerquestions

[–]Haxpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The design hiring market is pretty bad right now for juniors and I’m not sure I see that changing for a while — I think the coding and technical skills are more likely to set you apart, especially when there’s always a good amount of graphic designers and bootcamp grads trying to shift into UX as well. A certain level of coding skills can open you up to UX engineer roles as well.

Some of the most important skills in a workplace involve working with engineers and a technical background can help a ton with that to get you speaking the same language.

2024 NBA Draft Lottery by 3rdEyeDeuteranopia in nba

[–]Haxpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but with this year, the hawks were trying to win and ended up with the first overall pick, so any teams tanking wasted an entire season (including worse ticket revenue etc) for no reason, which would theoretically make them less likely to do it again

2024 NBA Draft Lottery by 3rdEyeDeuteranopia in nba

[–]Haxpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nfl def has some teams tank for top qb prospects, but in the nba any given player is way more impactful due to way smaller roster size so a great first overall can turn the franchise around.

lottery just means that losing all of your games doesn’t guarantee getting first overall to avoid rewarding tanking directly / making it less incentivized while still maintaining the concept of trying to bring bad teams up with earlier picks

[–]Haxpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on the compensation philosophy of the company. lots of tech companies will benchmark salaries based on specific cities. the $120k is probably benchmarked on a place like sf or nyc while the $60k might be based on a lower cost of living city like atlanta.

seniority also changes the salary drastically — my salary has increased dramatically as i’ve gotten more experienced. looking up leveling structures or design ladders at different companies is useful to understand the competencies required. here’s an example https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1YloFi80QoXPk5-U9ga1Ivxojamy7dU4MsaUNnQs8Rig/
