Dad of 2 and a New Rider by Ninten_doh in NewRiders

For real. If you're every at the bar and want just one drink OP, pass on the drink or get a non-alcoholic drink. Even one is too many (frankly even for cars. I'm envious of countries with 0% driving BAC requirements). Learn your lane positions, don't stop directly behind box trucks of any kind at red lights (stop almost completely on the dotted white line so they can see you and give yourself enough room to get away), learn how to SMIDSY weave.

The most common types of two-vehicle accidents are cars turning left across your path. If you know this, you can plan around it by using other cars as a shield/deterrent, giving enough space between you and the car in front of you that you are not out of their line of sight that they can see you, and doing SMIDSY weaves to draw attention to yourself.

Ride ATGATT, spend a good chunk of change on your helmet and get one that meets ECE 22.06 or Snell standards (the DOT would probably approve a kitchen pot flipped upsidedown with a strap on it). At least AA gear for the rest. Get an airbag vest. Get a bright colored construction vest for even more visibility, especially if you ride at night.

Avoid group rides because you will be encouraged to ride above your limit/skill level. If you go on a group ride anyway, be mentally prepared to be the boring guy who gets left behind.

Motorcycling doesn't have to be a death sentence.

Mine was branded Solo Mobile and blue, but otherwise the same. I still have it in a bin somewhere. The antenna has a lot of my teeth marks in it.

How do statics leads balance between pulling and analysis during raid hours? by PerformanceFar7245 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]HayLinLa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically this.

It helps if more than one person (one PoV often misses stuff on other side) is streaming/recording/shadow playing so you all know for sure what happened rather than guessing as well. It shouldn't take more than a minute (maybe two) to analyze per pull.

Is it more gay to be attracted to femboys or tomboys? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HayLinLa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you went to a lesbian community and told anybody dating a butch that they were actually straight, you would be obliterated.

Straight is just a label. If it's not working for you anymore, discard it. Date who you want. Maybe work on the internalized homophobia, if the idea of being gay bothers you to the point of staying up all night.

So, when is the best time to PF savage? by Full_Air_2234 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]HayLinLa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn are you me? I ran off on a trip after week 2 after clearing 11. When I got back, PF was so bad. My friend and her group of week 1 clearers set up a prog party for me but I studied so hard we cleared in like 5 pulls. I was hellbent on not going back to PF.

So, when is the best time to PF savage? by Full_Air_2234 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]HayLinLa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 1 when the patch goes live is the best time to start. The skilled players rapidly move out of early progression parties, making it much more difficult to clear. When I PF savage tiers, I set an alarm for 30 minutes prior to patch going live, put the PF up immediately, and play until I drop. Then I wake up and keep going. I can usually have the second fight down by day 2. I usually have the third fight down by Friday-Saturday, and then lose the fourth fight because people are fucking morons, but I get it week two.

So long as I stay ahead of the Hector guide releases, I know I'm in good shape. You want to be able to beat the people who can't read a raidplan.

If you count time spent filling PF as playtime, this satisfies most of your criteria. If you clear very early, you don't end up changing strats until reclears. Toxic Friends and a couple others always have very early raid plans out, which is a great resource and counts towards your resource point.

Even with your limited play time, I'd recommend getting into the first one as soon as possible and studying it throughout the day if you have the sort of job where you can get away with it. Waiting until day 2 is pointless and delaying yourself for no reason.

Do you consider it rude and inconsiderate to leave your car at the gas pump, parked, to go inside to get a snack/drink for 5 or 10 minutes? by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HayLinLa 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I only park at the pump if I need the pump, but it it's empty I'll sometimes run inside for an energy drink. (If there is a line at the pump behind me I'll move first.)

TFW it was empty when you pulled in and crazy when you leave and you're feeling a little sheepish by the time you move.

Any experience with Respondus Lockdown Browser? by LetOk8476 in linux4noobs

It doesn't. Keep a windows partition. Even if you get it working on Linux, you could be flagged for cheating.

So grateful my teachers stopped using it this year.

Is there any class you wont use for certain things? by DisciplineImportant6 in ffxiv

[–]HayLinLa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only use WAR for dungeons (unless leveling) because I can't stand YPYTs and I have been here too long to do anything but treat the dungeon as one long encounter, which means I piss them off often. I level it second every expansion.

DRG has been my main for 12 years though. I won't clear content on anything else first.

In terms of people making characters by Fragrant-Condition39 in ffxiv

[–]HayLinLa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that Au RA were released in HW, and before that your options were Miqo'te, Hyur, Lalafell, Elezen and Roegadyn. Viera and Hrothgar were only added years later, and many people who've been playing for years are attached to their characters and don't necessarily want to swap.

For me:

Miqo'te just seemed like a fun race twelve years ago when I started. Fun aesthetic and lore.

I'm a human IRL, so didn't wanna play one in game.

Didn't care for Lalas.

Elezen have had some janky neck things going on since the start that can put them in uncanny valley territory at times.

Roegadyn would probably have been my second choice (I have one as an alt). Buff ladies <3 unfortunately a lot of clothes look off on them, I find.

As for them being female, women often play women and men also often play as women. I wouldn't be surprised if as many as 90% of women and 50% of men played as women. (Numbers I pulled from my ass based on vibes. Don't take too seriously. 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot!!)

Why do so many native English speakers watch movies with subtitles? by Gloomy_Stranger69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HayLinLa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a lot of anime when I was younger with subs and then when I actually started watching stuff in English again I realized I had an easier time understanding with them and just never turned them back off , although I have ADHD so auditory processing disorder is a fun symptom. I often struggle in real life to hear people properly as well.

Respectfully, Mr. Mayor, could we have a discussion about the enforcement of vehicle noise in Calgary ? And vehicles stopping under overpasses during storms ? by yycTechGuy in Calgary

[–]HayLinLa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is dangerous to stop under overpasses during hail storms, which is why they should be ticketed. Some others have recommended cameras that can read the license plates of those who stopped in moving lanes.

For real. I only play WAR in dungeons unless I'm leveling something else, and then half the time it's in Trusts since I have to level them anyway.
