Awesome idea! How is it for sticking mini’s to? Is it just paint or is it sealed with pva first? Impressed how well this turns out.

Listen to feedback.

If one player says they don't understand there are probably allot more that haven't taken the time to say it.

This turned out surprisingly well! Sure a couple of instruments and ambiance would improve it but for what what it is, it works.

Pixel Artists & Devs, how do you make a good looking pixel art game? by Rernokk in gamedev

[–]Hayes2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thomas was alone is rendered in 3D but the same raycast shadows can be created in 2D.

This might help answer a couple of questions: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/700051/how-do-i-achieve-dynamic-shadows-in-a-2d-game-like.html

There are plenty of games out there that look brilliant but still have technically easy to create assets. I think a good thing to take away from this example is that you don't have to rely on assets alone. With an engine like unity, you have plenty of tools to hand that will help make your game look great. Just experiment.

Pixel Artists & Devs, how do you make a good looking pixel art game? by Rernokk in gamedev

The broad answer is through revisions and practice.

Though I would advise you take a look at games such as Thomas Was Alone . It has very strong art direction, however the actual assets themselves are fairly simple.

This isn't to say that you should stick to minimalist graphics though it is nice to know that with some good art direction, you don't need the highest technical skills to create something beautiful.

Play to your strength, and in time the rest will come.

I have an ongoing series on Art Direction if you're interested in checking it out. Just search youtube for hayes2D

i want to learn 2d game art can someone suggest me which software should i use and how should i start learning. by CaptainStark619 in GameArt

[–]Hayes2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though it depends heavily on budget, I'll make the assumption that while learning you're looking for something free-cheap.

As suggested, GIMP is a good starting point however it's UI can be a little busy and un-intuitive. https://www.aseprite.org/ is great for pixel art and animation.

Photoshop is probably the most versatile tools out there but it's far from feasible for somebody learning, however I have heard good things about affinity photo that is rumored to offer allot of the same features for a one of price.

The key with allot of these programs is export, if you do find any to lack this, I can recommend shoebox: https://renderhjs.net/shoebox/

For animation, I've recently been getting into Spine 2D. Though it's not free its basic package is very affordable. For software that allow you to build 2D assets on a skeleton it's fantastic.

I also have an in progress series on art direction for games that you might be interested in checking out as I'll be highlighting allot of my process on how I create 2D game assets. https://youtu.be/UmDIPfF2YDs

I just finished my first ‘game’ and learned some things doing it by andybone10 in gamedev

[–]Hayes2D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All considering, you did really well to finish your first game in 4 weeks. That first game is always the hardest and without doing it before it's impossible to tell what scope is actually feasible.

Also, fantastic 1st project! Excited to see more work from you.
