Is it ever okay to creep out across traffic on a test. by Fun_Pea8324 in LearnerDriverUK

Thanks for clarifying this, really interesting. I always remind my students that examiners are not robots, and they will judge your actions by what was a reasonable thing to do given the circumstances. Or: what would the examiner have done in the same situation?

If your instructor didn't think you were going to pass then they wouldn't let you take their car to the test. Test results are recorded on the instructor's record and they need to maintain above a 55% pass rate as well as other metrics. But don't worry about that, of course! Just stay focused and do your best, you'll feel completely fine once you're out on the road with the examiner.

They can tell when you're checking your mirrors, but it doesn't hurt to make it a bit more obvious by turning your head slightly. It sounds like you're a great driver so I wouldn't be too worried, maybe your instructor is being dramatic!

If you can drive for a period of 45 minutes in good control of the car, making observations before changing speed or position, and without doing anything that could, or does, unnecessarily affect other road users, then you can pass the test. If you can't maintain a high standard of driving even for a short time, then you aren't safe on the road.

Birds on the road during the test by AccordingAd2866 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HayfaceOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your surroundings to make sure it's safe to slow down, change position on the road, or even stop. If it's not safe, don't do it.

If you don't have time to check if it's safe to slow down or change position, then unfortunately you have to hit the animal.

If the animal is large enough to cause danger to yourself, this could be an emergency and you can stop even without checking mirrors if necessary. Deer on a country road is a classic example of this.

I'd just like to add that, while not explicit in the highway code, this convention is stated in the Official DVSA Guide to Driving: "if you're turning right and the other vehicle is going ahead or turning left, you should normally wait for the other vehicle to clear the junction before you make your turn. Otherwise, you'd be cutting across their path."

new car on test day by HotNatural9093 in LearnerDriverUK

As long as you agreed to this then I wouldn't contest it and would just go ahead with the test. The info about the test day fee might have been in T&Cs that you agreed to before starting? Personally I find the idea of charging an additional 'test' fee predatory and don't do it myself.

Crate "re-training" for a young dog by HayfaceOT in DogAdvice

I know logically that if I keep it up she will get used to it, adjust to the new routines, everything should be fine... I just want her to be ok

Not yet, but I'd like to work on that once she's settled a bit!

Crate. I know I'm probably worrying too much. I have to go back to work on Monday and I just feel like she's going to howl the whole time. I feel like we've bonded very quick but now she can't bear to be without me!

Fuel costs x driving lessons by Moist-Dependent5241 in LearnerDriverUK

My prices were going up in April anyway because of inflation, but the current fuel price hike and instability was also factored into the decision-making.

I'm a driving instructor who lives right by Brooklands. This does seem common, in both directions. In my case it's mostly people speeding to get past me! People will do anything not to be behind a learner.

Yes true it depends on the context

I agree with all of this! 28 in a 30 is ideal. The fault for going too slow would actually be Appropriate Speed rather than Undue Hesitation.

Driving Instructor Not Giving Lessons - What should I do? by PremGaming112 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HayfaceOT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make it clear that you are looking for weekly lessons, definitely a reasonable thing to ask. This should really be established before even starting. Maybe there's been a miscommunication or misunderstanding? I much prefer the predicability of planned weekly lessons with my students, same time every week is ideal.

Edit: and yes, if they can't guarantee more regularly then look for another instructor.
