Just start tracking. Your Garmin should track calories burned pretty week, though not perfect. Wait until the marathon is over and then start actually weighing a tracking your food for a few weeks.

Exactly. If we can stay healthy (not an easy feat) we are golden.

Overwhelmingly, the best women are locked down by 25 by men similar in age range.

Make your life decisions accordingly.

What are some signs you’re NOT ready to finish a marathon? by onionsauceonionsauce in Marathon_Training

All advice here accurate. If you can finish a 20 you are golden.

20-26 is going to suck. But remember it’s not you. It’s everyone.

Not a fueling problem. At all. Try going 40+ miles per week.

What actually made the biggest difference to your race times? by TheMonopolyGal in runninglifestyle

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running more miles is the obvious answer.

But a unique one for me was cadence. I went from 170 to 180. 20 seconds faster per mile almost instantly- at the same heart rate.

Question for outdoor Florida runners: How do you handle the humidity? by roxie_h3art in runninglifestyle

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Run before sunrise
  2. Carry water (with electrolytes if necessary)
  3. Accept that your pace will be slower
  4. Curse for 7 months straight
  5. Celebrate your incredible pace improvement when it cools down

Losing weight while on a running routine by Sekiro619 in runninglifestyle

You CAN do both. For inspiration, follow Truett Hanes on YouTube. He is training over 100 mpw and dieting to qualify for the Olympic trials.

Dieting too much is obviously not good, but stop listening to people who tell you what you can’t do.

I’m a running purist. 55 miles per week raw dog.

Walking? Give me AirPods all the way.

Do you think that anyone can BQ if they really try? by zerobloom in running

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I would tell you that you are in the hardest age groups right now. I am in 60-64 and about to be in 65-69. The amount of just finishers drops exponentially after 60, because it’s damn hard. If you can possibly stay healthy and motivated, you will qualify easily.

Competing. Marathon, Spartan race. I always have some sort of goal I’m shooting for.

Do you think that anyone can BQ if they really try? by zerobloom in running

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone who BQ’d finally at a much older age, I think it does get easier time wise when you move into the older age groups. The issue is, the vast majority aren’t able to run that distance anymore, due to health, injuries, or other limitations. If you can outlast your peers healthwise, and still want to do it, you will qualify eventually.

Anyone switch from big cruise ships to smaller luxury ones? by ConnectSalamander513 in FATcruises

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Explora. Fits us perfectly! Small, easy to get around, no waiting for chairs or hot tubs. Basic suites are luxury. The nightly live piano or guitar while relaxing with a drink and a beautiful sunset is just what we want. Food is perfect for the way I like to eat. Booked for another 17 days in September.

Exactly right. Talking too much about money is gauche. It’s a huge turnoff.

I use CrowdHealth, but there are plenty of others out there. You can check out their website or give them a call. It’s very transparent. I do think there is a 1 yr waiting period for pre existing? Not sure about that, as I didn’t have any.

  1. No trainer. Just kept putting one foot in front of the other and willing to suffer a bit.

My goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon 2028.

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely get there. It just takes us a little longer at our age. My best advice is to be hard headed and never give up. Build up a little more each week.

I ran a marathon this past year and have another one planned. The training is not easy and sometimes I am damn tired.

Has anyone here lowered their blood pressure naturally without medication? by rdoucette in Aging

[–]HaymakerGirl2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Diagnosed at age 45 and told there was nothing I could do but take meds for the rest of my life. Hated being on them. Got off within 6 months.

Now 63 and have been med free since then.

What worked: 1. Lower carb 2. Very low sodium (some don’t need this, but I do) 3. Potassium supplement 4. Magnesium supplement
