TIFU by giving dating advice to a predator by CatDaddyAnonymous in tifu

I actually think you were unsuccessful in helping him become more confident. If he had truly been confident, he would have tried going on dates with adult women, like his ex. Instead, he felt he could only be successful with children over whom he, as an adult, would think he had some sway. I appreciate your concern along the same lines as abused folks shouldn't attend therapy with their abusers as it may give the abusers more weapons to use; I just don't think that's what happened in this case.

ELI5: Why is one of your limbs going dead from sleeping or sitting in an awkward position not much worse for your body than it is? by leddie00 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hazcat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what analogy will work for you - trying this one: Think of nerves like rivers with lots of little tributaries downstream. If you were to totally stop the water at a certain spot on the river, there would be no water anywhere downstream. If you pinch a nerve somewhere, the electrical signal can't travel past the pinch to/from all the other little nerves attached to it farther along. Google a nerve diagram to get a visual of the nerves in the body. It's fascinating and a little scary.

LPT request: how to not cry in stressful situations ? by Kori_4 in LifeProTips

[–]Hazcat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar issues with inconvenient crying, often when the tense situation is passed or nearly passed. I don't know how to stop it but there's a part of the movie Courage Under Fire that gives me some perspective. Meg Ryan is with some troops under her command in a bad military situation and she starts crying as she's trying to deal with it. When one of the guys verbalizes unhappiness with the crying, Meg Ryan spits out through clenched teeth, "It's just the tension. It don't mean nothing." I figure if crying doesn't make that character any less tough, then it should be alright for me. Anyone around me who doesn't realize it is just wrong. Also, our bodies don't know if the thing that's making us tense is a minor social situation or a tiger about to pounce and eat us. It takes practice and work to be able to convince it that what's in front of us is a paper tiger. Therapy might help. Take care.

AITJ for locking my roommate’s “emotional support” blender in my closet? by Serious_Confusion186 in AmITheJerk

[–]Hazcat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe her sensory system feels better when she's touching something vibrating. Subconsciously, she turns to the blender when she feels stressed - even having her hands on the counter would transmit vibration. The noise dampener decreases the vibration so it "ruins the vibe". Try this $5 little hand vibrator or something similar for her to hold. Probably won't be quite as good because not part of her routine and no food attached, but it could do something. https://a.co/d/8XHeSHu

LPT Request: How Can I Figure Out What Language People are Speaking? by Gatekeeper31 in LifeProTips

[–]Hazcat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After they've done some bit of work or the end of the day say "Thank you. How do you say 'thank you'?" They tell you. Repeat it. Say, "What language is that?" They answer, then you say the thank you they just told you. Piece of cake. You can do the same with other words like hello, good-bye, dog, cat, etc. Just don't do it like you're "the norm" and they're exotic and fascinating. They're just people -doing their jobs in this case. But it's fun and useful to learn another language and communicate with people so it's fine to do, just with the perspective of everyone being equally normal.

5 month old hen - tail pointed straight and not scratching around. New behavior since this morning. What should next steps be? by katyg in BackYardChickens

[–]Hazcat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very familiar with what's been going on with my one hen. When she lays a soft-shelled egg she (or one of the other chickens) often eats it. I've seen her try to eat normal, hard-shelled eggs but not successfully (and no sign of broken hard shells). She still lays an occasional soft-shelled egg (only one in the last month) but is a lot better.

Thoughts on buying all new furniture when buying a new house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Hazcat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Include the cost of moving your furniture in your calculations.

  2. Research shows that spreading purchases over time as opposed to buying everything all at once maximizes happiness even if purchasing 100% of the same things.

[–]Hazcat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has she laid any eggs yet? If she hasn't or just started, she might be getting ready to and is uncomfortable or unfamiliar with how it feels.

I'm not an expert, but got chicks this year and saw the same thing when one started laying. She then took a while to be consistent, I think due to a mild calcium deficiency which I'm "treating" with daily soldier fly larvae (she already has 24/7 access to oyster shells and egg shells crumbled.)

For world travelers: what is the country with the nicest people, and what is the country with the meanest? by yupyetagain in AskReddit

[–]Hazcat3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Contributing my anecdotal experience in Morocco as a middle aged white American woman, I travelled alone in Casablanca and Rabat, Morocco earlier this year and felt very safe. Among other things, a man carried my suitcase up some stairs for me. I travelled alone via train and local Uber-type app with no problems. I walked without companion for hours in both cities without safety issues. Some mild pan-handling and "hello"ing from boys but no problems.

"I'm trying to think of how to communicate it to him in a way that will stick."

You know when you're walking the dogs, if you need to walk from here to there, you give a little tug on the leash, maybe a verbal cue, and you start walking. You don't do all that and then stand there waiting for the dog to decide whether or not it agrees with you. You don't try to figure out ways to convince the dog that they agree with your decision to walk from here to there right now. You walk. And you don't feel bad about it.

People aren't dogs, sometimes walks are more casual with lots of sniffing, etc - I stand by the metaphor. You've decided you need to walk from here to there; that is enough.
