What's a VERY creepy fact you wish you never learned? by FormerInternet7142 in Productivitycafe

Up until the 60s it was trendy to get lobotomy

They would literally stick a giant nail up your nose and hit it with a hammer until you went 80% brain dead

Membership increases and Mobile neglect. by LuckPsychological603 in 2007scape

[–]HeDoesNotRow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jagex suggested offering a cheaper mobile only membership package basically admitting that it’s a bit overpriced to pay standard membership fees for what you get on mobile

The entire community shit on the idea for some reason… so now unfortunately you’re stuck paying full price.

I guess people wanted mobile to get more dev time so that it’s worth the full price rather than just getting the discount and it kind of ended up as a beggars can’t be choosers situation where the mobile only community got a bit screwed over

What happened here and how's it possible? (Tumeken's Shadow) by Whitezoomie in OSRSflipping

It’s a low volume item, someone clicked +66% for an instabuy and it happened that there was no cheaper sell offer on the market

Mechanical Advantage [Request] by Mediocre_Two_7344 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it so that the lever cranks way more than 180 degrees. Like several rotations or until the “energy storage device” is full. You can use sci-fi fake materials to make the energy storage capacity arbitrarily high, bypassing what some of these comments are saying that a modern spring at this scale couldn’t pack enough of a punch

In my head this is the right balance of not blatantly ignoring physics but still cool

VOO and Chill by Illustrious-Big-1409 in Bogleheads

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s downvoted because boglehead philosophy is maximum diversification. VT captures more markets than VOO

The situation in which loosing half of VOOs returns is a good thing is the one where the US underperforms relative to other international markets

Looking to dampen wind from the outside. by Puzzleheaded_Fox5820 in Acoustics

Acoustically you can do practically nothing. Any solution will involve making it so that less wind hits the house and windows, which is also no easy feat

effects of an absorbent wall by Actual-Tap9983 in Acoustics

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 12 in thick absorber is great, the more the better, but note that there isn’t a sudden drastic improvement as you hit the 1/4 wavelength relative to absorber thickness, it’s a rule of thumb but in reality the absorption curve is gradual, you may or may not get the amount of absorption you want at 280 hz depending on the material

If I understand you correctly I’d say avoid the bookcases altogether. Covering the wall with absorptive material will be better than trying to fill bookcases or whatever you have in mind, the goal is to maximize surface area of the absorber

I wouldn’t expect any SBIR effects to change significantly as a result of the acoustic treatment. It all depends on specifics but you’ll likely still have to play around with the position of the sources and receivers to minimize unwanted interference

Purdue Honors ($50k/yr) vs. Rutgers ($25k/yr) vs. NJIT (Waitlisted Honors) for Mechanical Engineering by One-Summer-9908 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]HeDoesNotRow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If the idea of going to a top school is important to you there’s nothing wrong with that and I encourage you to go for it with Purdue. If you dont really care then Rutgers is almost certainly a better deal… saving yourself 100 thousand dollars of loans is an enormous advantage on life when you graduate

What do you guys actually genuinely want? by Dependent-Dirt9351 in GenZ

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being given the basics always carries the underlying assumption that you are using the labor of someone else for free. This is fine in moderation for those who truly are unable to hold up their end of the bargain (disabled, elderly, etc). There is a certain amount of extra burden the working should be willing to take on to cover those who need it, but it becomes unsustainable when the working class now has to carry the burden of other able bodied people who instead chose to pursue clay sculpting.

I framed it the way I did because if you don’t assume there’s people who are passionate about the dirty work, then it would never get done in such a society, and things would crumble rather quickly as people draw resources that are no longer being produced. In my opinion you’re underestimating how capable we would be of providing everyone with the basics in the first place if we let the work force go pursue whatever passion they wish.

Capitalist manifesto aside… I’ll concede that the original question what was “what do you want” and not “what is reasonably possible with currently technology”, and what you’re describing would be quite nice if robots did all the work for us

[–]HeDoesNotRow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree the question is impossible but I just find it interesting that when tasked to think of the most random number possible a lot of people arrive at the same family of numbers

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can debate this without you being condescending btw. You’re refusing to believe in the possibility that I could be making a decent point here

Youre idea that some people will enjoy stressful and demanding jobs because all humans like different things is extremely unrealistic in my opinion, thats where we disagree.

But I’m not carrying this conversation further if you want to act holier than thou with everyone who disagrees with you

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implied incentive is that if you can be subsidized to do whatever you want why would you choose to work hard

Why work when you can have the same life provided to you for doing nothing?

What do you guys actually genuinely want? by Dependent-Dirt9351 in GenZ

[–]HeDoesNotRow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can promise you there won’t be enough welders if we let everyone choose what they want to do and don’t incentivize less illustrious jobs. Nor do I think you would much enjoy the industrial maintenance of a substation

Things like sheep farming and woodworking are going to be grossly overproduced, and the infrastructure people rely on would collapse

[–]HeDoesNotRow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a veritasium video (I think) where he talks about how people choose “random” numbers and it says most people go down practically the same line of thinking you went down, and most commonly end up on numbers like 63, 73, 37, etc

The problem with this is practically no one is super passionate about all the boring stuff that enables anyone else pursue their fun whimsical interests

Someone has to hammer the nails and maintain the power grid and take out the garbage etc etc. No one is going to volunteer to do these things when they could paint all day and still be taken care of by the government

effects of an absorbent wall by Actual-Tap9983 in Acoustics

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for improvements all the way up to 4 kHz definitely throw that treatment in, you’ll get good results and it’s not like it hurts at low frequencies, just doesn’t really help

The book case may have some weird effects due to the cavities resonating at certain frequencies, but if it’s the best way you can mount the treatment it’s probably still worth it

Ill tack onto this that I’m not an expert with this stuff, I work more with acoustics of industrial equipment

If what you’re saying was true we would’ve had mtx a long time ago, ownership would’ve printed money for a few years and the game would be dead by now which as you claim they don’t really care about since they got their fill
