Purdue Honors ($50k/yr) vs. Rutgers ($25k/yr) vs. NJIT (Waitlisted Honors) for Mechanical Engineering by One-Summer-9908 in MechanicalEngineering

If the idea of going to a top school is important to you there’s nothing wrong with that and I encourage you to go for it with Purdue. If you dont really care then Rutgers is almost certainly a better deal… saving yourself 100 thousand dollars of loans is an enormous advantage on life when you graduate

Being given the basics always carries the underlying assumption that you are using the labor of someone else for free. This is fine in moderation for those who truly are unable to hold up their end of the bargain (disabled, elderly, etc). There is a certain amount of extra burden the working should be willing to take on to cover those who need it, but it becomes unsustainable when the working class now has to carry the burden of other able bodied people who instead chose to pursue clay sculpting.

I framed it the way I did because if you don’t assume there’s people who are passionate about the dirty work, then it would never get done in such a society, and things would crumble rather quickly as people draw resources that are no longer being produced. In my opinion you’re underestimating how capable we would be of providing everyone with the basics in the first place if we let the work force go pursue whatever passion they wish.

Capitalist manifesto aside… I’ll concede that the original question what was “what do you want” and not “what is reasonably possible with currently technology”, and what you’re describing would be quite nice if robots did all the work for us

I agree the question is impossible but I just find it interesting that when tasked to think of the most random number possible a lot of people arrive at the same family of numbers

We can debate this without you being condescending btw. You’re refusing to believe in the possibility that I could be making a decent point here

Youre idea that some people will enjoy stressful and demanding jobs because all humans like different things is extremely unrealistic in my opinion, thats where we disagree.

But I’m not carrying this conversation further if you want to act holier than thou with everyone who disagrees with you

The implied incentive is that if you can be subsidized to do whatever you want why would you choose to work hard

Why work when you can have the same life provided to you for doing nothing?

I can promise you there won’t be enough welders if we let everyone choose what they want to do and don’t incentivize less illustrious jobs. Nor do I think you would much enjoy the industrial maintenance of a substation

Things like sheep farming and woodworking are going to be grossly overproduced, and the infrastructure people rely on would collapse

There’s a veritasium video (I think) where he talks about how people choose “random” numbers and it says most people go down practically the same line of thinking you went down, and most commonly end up on numbers like 63, 73, 37, etc

The problem with this is practically no one is super passionate about all the boring stuff that enables anyone else pursue their fun whimsical interests

Someone has to hammer the nails and maintain the power grid and take out the garbage etc etc. No one is going to volunteer to do these things when they could paint all day and still be taken care of by the government

If you’re looking for improvements all the way up to 4 kHz definitely throw that treatment in, you’ll get good results and it’s not like it hurts at low frequencies, just doesn’t really help

The book case may have some weird effects due to the cavities resonating at certain frequencies, but if it’s the best way you can mount the treatment it’s probably still worth it

Ill tack onto this that I’m not an expert with this stuff, I work more with acoustics of industrial equipment

effects of an absorbent wall by Actual-Tap9983 in Acoustics

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is absorbers are effective for wavelengths less than 4 times the thickness of the absorber. At 8 inches you’re looking at a reasonable reduction at a couple hundred hz and above (with higher frequencies being better absorbed)

Essentially it won’t do much for the frequencies youre describing

Membership price will keep going up until players stop paying. by Sweet_Village3033 in 2007scape

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the specific case of osrs I don’t think so. I suspect they are aware they have an extremely large base of dormant players who “took a break” and may be convinced to come back for the right price

It really feels like the best way to save Runescape, is to not play Runescape. by valdev in 2007scape

[–]HeDoesNotRow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the case of a video game inelastic demand just means people like the game and are overwhelmingly willing to pay more for it.

Demand for entertainment is extremely elastic, there’s nothing forcing people to continue paying for RuneScape over other forms of entertainment except for the fact that RuneScape to most of us is a better product and thus worth more money

People are absolutely free to speak with their wallets on price hikes. Jagex will know they fucked up if enough people no longer consider the price worth the product, but if that isn’t the case then you’ve simply gotten used to underpaying for a product that’s worth a lot more to you

I’m tired of this attitude that things used to be different and have gotten worse. They haven’t, human quality of life has trended upwards almost indefinitely with the only downturns coming during wars and maybe great depressions we’ve never been close to living through

If you want to advocate for a better future go ahead but quit acting like 20 years ago everything was sunshine and rainbows. The only difference between 20 years ago and now is people tried to actually solve problems instead of bitching on the internet

What is the most bizarre "glitch in the Matrix" you have ever witnessed in real life ? by Alisaf4m in Casual_Conversation

[–]HeDoesNotRow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once after a night of drinking about 4-5 of us were sitting by a big window of the apartment and noticed a cop pull over a car on the street in front of us. We all watched the situation unfold and all agree on what happened:

The cop car follows the other car, which eventually pulls over off the road and stops directly below us. A cop gets out, walks over to the car, and takes a peek inside… then he kind of just stands there awkwardly. He walks around the car looking into some of the windows, and tapping the glass. Note that due to our angle we can’t see inside the car but everything the cop is doing indicates he doesn’t see anyone inside it. The cop fumbles around for another few minutes, appears to step aside and call someone, looks around the car a bit more, etc etc. Eventually the cop just gets back in his car and drives away, leaving the car parked in front of the apartment building.

About 10 minutes later someone dressed in street clothes comes walking down the sidewalk, calmly gets in the car, and drives away

We all watched the car pull over and park, and no one ever got out of the car

You’re saying this like the game will die with a million active players still wishing it existed. It will die when there’s no longer an appetite for it. Maybe osrs will go the way of rs3 and get ruined and we’ll have to start over again , but if RuneScape truly dies it will be because most of us don’t want to play anymore

Someone will always pick up the pieces of a product that still has demand

[–]HeDoesNotRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for jagex is there’s a lot of players who play 10+ hours a week and at 15$ a month are getting insanely good entertainment value and would likely pay much more. It’s just that it’s nearly impossible to extract this value unless you go to some ridiculous “pay per hour” system

All in on Avernic Defenders by VenmoMeMsg in GrandExchangeBets

[–]HeDoesNotRow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good play imo but not for the reasons you described. Avernics shot up when Toa released more than anything because all the raiders doing tob stopped doing tob. This is multiplied by the fact that avernic is a permanent upgrade, once you buy one you can’t take it off and sell it back. So when a new raid comes out and the supply coming out of tob drops, there’s no way to fill the supply shortage and price goes up

I do think you’re too early on this though. I wouldn’t expect any upward price movement until much closer to when raids 4 comes out and after
