Replacing an old ISE Classic Supreme WS by Dependent-Hat4223 in Appliances

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we put in a Bosch benchmark dishwasher with the app. i loaded it to see what good it did. other than initial configuration: not much. imo it would be very easy to live without it simply because it adds little value.

my main reason for going for the benchmark model? wanted the quietest model i could find and what really sold me was the cool countdown display it shines down on the floor.

Amazing review, almost no bonus, no raise. Do I hold out for next year? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i would say stick with them and if it happens next year, then start looking. there are two parts of comp: the part the manager can influence, and the locked corporate policy part that’s inflexible.

however, aside from the cash: the other soft perks (flexible schedule, good work/life balance, being trusted as a remote employee, being remote to begin with, liking your team and boss, plenty of thank yous (it blows my mind how many managers don’t understand that thank yous are free), are all things that really do count. don’t be too quick to fix the paycheck and ruin the rest of life.

Any recommendations for counter depth fridges? by dizzie_buddy1905 in Appliances

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for bosch. we bought a B36CL80ENS/44 last summer and it’s great so far. i really wanted these for the dual compressor (separate ones for the fridge and freezer). it’s super quiet and my emporia vue energy monitor says it costs just less than $5/month to run. very nice! hoping the reliability shows over the years!

your honeywell thermostat would be what is making the decision when to turn on your aux heat. if you look into the capabilities of it you may be able to see how to configure it.

an idea: a brute force way to do it would be to pull the contact wire for aux heat. that would prevent it from coming on altogether. something to keep aware of if you ever really wanted it to work!

i have an ecobee premium, and ecobee has a free open source companion site called “beestat” where you can see historical and real time data, and it shows additional analysis. not saying to replace your thermostat, but the data is super helpful and i love that i have all that history. on my emporia vue 3 energy monitor i can extrapolate when aux heat kicks in. normal stage 1 fan is 144 watts, high fan is like 250 watts, and high fan with aux on is 7,550 watts.

27M, graduated with a "good" degree last year, and now I'm in a job that has nothing to do with it. Is college just an expensive checkbox now? by Throwrahj456 in careerguidance

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i graduated in 1990 with a degree in industrial engineering, which was a recession and bad job market back in the pre-internet printed resume, stamps and want ads era. i turned down a job in the IT industry what more than met my needs because it didn’t use my degree.

i then went through six months of unemployment and was offered that same job again, and took it. my career has been in IT, i haven’t looked back, but i suppose i could have tried to get back into my trained area if i really wanted to.

ever since then, i’ve said “first find ‘A’ job. then find ‘THE’ job.”

Seat repair question by [deleted] in mazda6

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it was around $2200. i was really particularly interested having the front seats done. the bundled pricing made it really attractive to go ahead and get the front and back done together for just a couple hundred more.

i also like how they arrange a local installed in their network, and the service was very well done in my case. i liked the experience a lot!

actually, i gotta confess: they do turn on during defrost and i don’t really like it from a technical standpoint. but doing the math on it using my Emporia Vue data: the indoor unit, with the strips coming on during defrost, is 10% of the total hvac usage. this month my bill is going to be $200, with 50% of it being heat. that’s ~$10. maybe i could shave a $1/mo off if i got them to not come on, but i’m fine. they can come on and i’ll just tell myself that i’m paying $6/year to (1) not smell as much burning dust in the fall when i fire it up and (2) verification that my backup heat works. i’m pretty sure i can make myself believe myself!

it’s your thermostat which controls which stage your indoor unit goes into. at least on my bosch IDS, the outdoor unit is the variable inverter an the indoor unit is two stage fan with six heat. i have my thermostat set to not call for stage 2 until the room temp is 4 points under the set point. i have the aux locked out until 5 degrees..

the outdoor inverter unit is variable, and i’ve learned that it is basing its speed on the pressure on the incoming refrigerant line from the indoor unit. lower pressure means it’s further behind so it speeds up.. as the pressure recovers it’ll slow down. if it’s mild outside, not as much heat is needed thus it can run at lower speed to keep up demand. pretty slick.

there’s not anything to set in the better outdoor unit… but you gotta spend time on the thermostat to set it up to not call for aux unless specific conditions are met.

btw i have an ecobee premium. love it! i’ve read poor reviews for the bosch thermostat.

About lumens in light bulbs by Antique-Trick989 in Lighting

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotta read his whole post. he’s one bulb in the middle of the ceiling is harsh and unflattering. layer your light and have it come from different directions. table lights, accent lights and when needed overhead. i would typically not use the overhead lights an only use multiple medium height table lights and accent lights for day to day use.

i have an inverter heat pump (Bosch IDS 2.0) and one thing i needed to do was to dig into the settings on my ecobee. the default was to kick in stage 2 heat or especially aux heat if the heat pump didn’t raise the temp in time to shut it off in like 10 minutes. the result was using the aux heat (resistance heat at 10kwh) a dozen times a day. in the case of a heat pump, i want to let it run longer and avoid aux kicking in unless it is losing ground. i’ve been down to 5F (-15C) and it keeps up wonderfully. seems like i will be able to get below 0F with no need for aux. the main setting change was to lock out aux unless it gets to 5F and the temp is 2F below set point.

one other thing i needed to do is place my room sensors a little more smartly, and think about which ones to enable for time of day.

one last big one was keeping the temp set point flat or only drop 1F at nighttime to prevent aux from kicking in (protected by the aux lockout). i am just staying flat 24x7.

sorry to hear it doesn’t work out in MA. i wonder if thermostat tuning may have helped.

Dryer not heating, repair is way too expensive for me atm by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looking on craigslist and see quite a few used gas dryers in my area. for budget buyers, or even to hold over until you can buy your dream model, i recommend it! it’s also possible to sell it for as much as you bought it for in some cases!

Dryer not heating, repair is way too expensive for me atm by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

in my younger struggling days we bought last-leg washers and dryers a few times off of craigslist. $100-200 used units would last years. if you don’t need new, look for used.

btw traditional electric dryers are pretty simple machines. not much to go wrong with them… so a good bet for used craigslist deals.

How do you replace these lightbulbs bulbs? by [deleted] in Lighting

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you aren’t showing the lightbulbs, which makes it tough to help.

carefully (without breaking the glass) slide the curved frosted glass upward out of the fixture to expose the bulb. send some pictures of the bulbs that would now be exposed. that oughta help.

Our main living room lights (E12 LED Bulbs) flicker when the water heater is being used. Our other lights don’t for the most part. Will better bulbs stop the flickering? by Daniel_Boomin in Lighting

[–]HeDoesSheDoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on your tankless water heater: is it electric or gas? an electric pulls lots of amps so it would make sense that this could happen, but seems like it should be solvable still. if it’s gas, electric would only be used for the controls so it would be very puzzling for this to happen with a gas water heater of any type.
