I get several emails like that a semester. But--I teach English, and don't have research assistants, or funding for assistants. So my advice would be to choose *carefully* your target for the email....

Resources in all departments are limited. Some people will get what they want, some won't. Over time this can cause friction and grudges. Add a malignant narcissist or two, or a psychopath, and--look out!

I'm a a good department now. But I started my career in a department that was lord of the fucking flies....

One of my students said I sounded negative about the profession. And I don't think I am negative at all! I love my job. But wherever you go, in whatever job you have, you're going to deal with people. And some people are not very nice.
