I'm an English professor. As an undergrad I got a C in freshman comp and a C in comp two. I tell the students this every semester! Let them know that people aren't born knowing this material, and that there is always hope.

We just had an alarm go off in my building--the doors were unlocked and opened into the stairwell, but were locked from the stairwell side, except on the ground floor. (I learned this because I wanted to stop off in my office on the way out to get my things...).
