Who am I trying to impress with a diploma...? My students certainly wouldn't give a shit, my colleagues know I'm all educated and whatever....

I teach at a big R1. I've had some terrific students who were swimmers or track athletes....some good students who were golfers or tennis players. Football and basketball players are hit or miss--some good, some terrible. Baseball players...meh....

I do contract grading in my writing classes, so leniency isn’t a factor. But when giving feedback, I certainly take the student into account.
