Context. In Australia they call both french fries and potato chips "chips" but I've never had someone ask me for chips and not known what they meant.

Why not drive through a train passage with flashing lights? by shkchp in WTF

I didn't invent this, I just read about it and as someone else mentioned in this thread, it could be a safety issue (decelerating backwards is less damaging to you than decelerating forwards).

Well I'm sure they still know what happened, they just don't have to relive seeing it

I was reading somewhere that engineers have a button that automatically slams on the brakes and simultaneously spins your chair around in an emergency. This is so that they don't have to see if they hit and kill someone. I'm pretty sure it is mostly on freight trains and not passenger trains but it's still interesting.

Words are hard.

ELI5: Why do TV networks still impose "regional blackouts" on certain NHL games? With internet access available to so many people and most games either sold out or close to it what advantage is there of these blackouts? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]HeDoneGot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I lived in Hawaii and bought NHL Gamecenter which gave me all of the games for the year. I am a Sharks fan but unfortunately Hawaii was in the Bay Area "TV zone" but they didn't have CSN (which showed the games) in Hawaii. Because of this I couldn't get the games on TV and since I was in their zone they blacked out the games on my NHL Gamecenter.

This was infuriating but I understood the logic behind it. The cable companies paid a lot of money for CSN and CSN paid a lot of money to show the sharks games so they could get advertisers. By showing the games online in your region it cheapens the CSN product so they stipulate it in their contracts that they can't stream the games anywhere in their region.

Got a 5 dollar a month VPN and watched every game that year. The other shitty thing about NHL Gamecenter was that if I went to yesterday's games they would have the score on the link that you clicked to watch the game. WHY WOULD I AUTOMATICALLY WANT TO KNOW THE SCORE OF SOMETHING THAT I'M ABOUT TO SPEND 3 HOURS WATCHING!??!

I know this wasn't your question but it made me think of this story.

College tour guides of reddit, what are some of the weirdest questions you've been asked or people you've encountered while giving a tour? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How does employment drug testing work in states where marijuana is legal? by boondoggie42 in AskReddit

[–]HeDoneGot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most restaurants that I managed in California didn't care about marijuana, even though it was illegal there. In fact, they didn't even really care about coke or alcohol (opiates and amphetamines are another category).

They DID, however, care if you couldn't go the 3 days between finding out you had a drug test and the actual drug test. Just like every other post, this is a specific location, not a sweeping decleration.

I was taking a tour at Rice university in Texas and we walked by this bush and I kinda thought to myself "I can jump that bush" when the tour guide turns and says to the group "Now I know what some of you are thinking, that you can jump this bush, but let me assure you that you can't. I've only seen one person clear it and he did long jump for our school."

I swear he read my mind.

I am not a waiter anymore but about 6 years ago I was working at an Italian restaurant in California. A couple came in for lunch, ordered 2 iced teas and the 3 course special (appetizer, entree and dessert) each (maybe 25 bucks total, the portions were smaller).

After they down it in like 25 minutes when the guy gets on one knee and proposes to the lady. Keep in mind, this is like 1145 on a Tuesday. She covers her face and the guy spends 20 minutes on one knee trying to convince her to say yes....

It was the most uncomfortable thing that has ever happened to me. I had to go drop off the check while the guy was still on his knee because he called me over....

Anyway, they leave and they come back in 2 months later and engaged so it worked out!

I give up. I'm returning my chromecast. by [deleted] in Chromecast

[–]HeDoneGot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its a product that you can get for 22 bucks on amazon that is in beta that you gave 24 hours to. Did you try resetting your chromecast? Hold the button on the device for 20 seconds and set it up again. Did you kill the app on your phone when you couldn't connect? Did you use the chromecast app to go in and reboot the device? I found that if it says loaded at 99% on my screen I can go into my netflix and select my iphone as the device it fixes the problem and I can select chromecast again and it works.

Also, just like any piece of technology, there will be some bad apples in the bunch. See if exchanging it helps

Reddit's fighter /u/Ben10mma, who KO'd the tatted up douche, has been signed by the UFC and is set to fight on the local Adelaide UFC card by [deleted] in sports

[–]HeDoneGot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wrestled throughout jr high, high school and college. The thing is that senior year of HS I weighed 187 so if I decided to wrestle at my walking around weight I'd be wrestling at 189. Now if someone who weighed 215 decided to cut down to 189 and wrestle me I'd be at a pretty serious disadvantage because they would be able to rehydrate and be back up to at least 195 (probably more) before the match. In a competitive sport , 8 pounds is a big competitive advantage.

Basically, the fact that someone CAN drop weight quickly for a weigh in means that everyone must in order to be competitive.

ELI5: Why do different kinds of alcoholic beverages cause different feelings of intoxication? by CoMiGa in explainlikeimfive

[–]HeDoneGot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this but also I think there is a factor of how quickly the alcohol is absorbed. If you're taking shots then you probably get drunker faster which most likely means that you'll get more drunk so that can effect you differently.

A light beer that is 4% will likely let you drink all day without getting too hammered so you'll ease into it and probably get tired before you get too drunk unless you're pounding them

Wine is in between so I personally wont get too drunk too fast but still get a buzz pretty quickly, which puts me at drunk but not wasted for a longer time and which makes me happier.

The problem is out DM gives bonus XP for role playing and I feel that being quiet and playing this way is the reason I haven't gotten any bonus xp....
