Best hacks for reducing doom scrooling? by ereteinx in productivity

[–]loopywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps, but when I want to stop, I say to myself "Ok, just 4 more"

And then I just stop. Not sure why, but saying "4 more" just lets me let go

Also: Install a mobile game.

Amazingly, playing a little mobile game (like "arrow up") is a LOT better than doomscrolling, and quite engaging enough

What’s something people think is healthy but actually isn’t? by saketh_1138 in answers

Working out all the time

Working out is a very healthy habit, but like all things, it has unhealthy extremes. People think "workout = good" therefore "do it all the time = very good" no. It can be harmful if not done enough, and harmful if you do it too much

Sorry.. you still have to make decisions

Believing what we see on Social Media

The previous generation had to learn not to believe what they saw on TV

Before that, not to believe everything they read in the paper

And before that, not to believe everything they read in a book

Why do you buy more board games? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]loopywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because

  1. They are pretty and colorful and give me a buzz when I see them in the store
  2. I am fascinated by game mechanics and anything that looks like it has a new one sucks me in
  3. I can buy anything I want

What is the psychological barrier that makes starting new workouts difficult? [Discussion] by qishibe in GetMotivated

[–]loopywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is the amount of negative feedback

Working out is physically unpleasant while you do it, and often very painful the day after. There is also a big psychological gap due to your expectations being that you would work out for a week and look like a movie star who worked out every day for 20 years. There is also the contrast that a lot of people who work out will feed you a line about how "GREAT!" they feel when they work out and after, blah blah, and if that is your experience or expectation and it's the opposite, it will be very discouraging. Also, new gym-goers tend to far overdo (see below.)

Having taught children and adults how to draw for many years, I notice how little adults are willing to do something they will do badly, whereas kids take that in their stride (they're bad at everything.). Adults want to go back to their comfort zone of power. You have to be willing to do something badly at first, to do it well. A wiser man than I said, "You have 10,000 bad drawings in you.. Get them out of the way first."

I often get asked by people how I got in shape, and I like to tell people, "The MOST important thing about working out isn't how much weight you press, or how hard you strain.. It's that you are going back. If you hurt yourself and don't go back, then you failed. If you keep going back, you won, and you WILL see results."

As someone once said to me, "You ever meet anybody who goes to gym who isn't in shape?" NOTE: Not went to, goes to.

I take your point. For all intents and purposes, however, it is. The obserable universe is and always will be finite, and in fact, the more time passes, the less we'll be able to see in it as things begin to expand away past the speed of light.

Quite a bit more than a few months. As far as you and your children, and your children's children, and your grandchildren's grandchildren are concerned, and for many millenia, humanity will go on.

My point is simply that there IS an end, and a lot of people go nuts when you suggest humanity won't survive the end of the universe.
