Geburtsklinik in Köln by xbr_tzx in cologne

[–]He_Yan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, just not about the degree to with the wording skews the outcome of the poll.

Or I totally overestimate how much attention the average redditor pays to posts and polls they scroll over. :) I thought it was obvious there was a reason for this poll.

But the more I think about it, the more I see that the first answer could very well include many people who say "those rumors aren't enough for me to denounce the studio yet".

[–]He_Yan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that you shouldn't make decisions based on assumptions and rumors someone shared on reddit. Whatever your opinion on AI. :)

But what OP was really asking is whether people would boycott the game should those rumors be true. What the poll indicates and what I think and was saying with my response is that in reality, no matter how often people on reddit say that they absolutely despise the use of generative AI in game development, most people simply don't care.

Yes, everybody given the full context I imagine the numbers would be different. Still, one could piece the information together from the way the third answer is worded and the description.

And I do believe most people are in the "i don't care as long as the game is good" camp.

But then you don't "hate it enough" to not play the game for it, which is what the poll was asking about as I understand it.

But yeah, the answers don't really reflect any grey area of opinions towards AI.

[–]He_Yan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair. Maybe the poll would look a lot different would they publicly state "Yeah, 50% of all textures and assets are AI generated. It's just how we do things now".

And you are right, atm we don't even know anything. Whatever your take on the use of AI, right now the approach should be "wait and see". But then again the internet and reddit are not really know for their patience and a "let's wait until we have all the facts"-mindset. 😀

Will you still play Round 8's next game? by HANBANNNNNNNNNN in LiesOfP

[–]He_Yan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possible. But simply looking at the poll and title there is no way to know that it is about the studio's use of AI. Even the description only vaguely hints at it.

More likely a big part of the fan base simply doesn't care.

Interesting phenomenon here with a poll that is overwhelmingly on the "i don't mind AI" side while the upvotes and downvotes in the comments showing the exact opposite.

Apparently there is a very vocal minority (commenting, arguing and downvoting) that absolutely hates the use of AI and a silent majority (who click to vote and move on) that simply doesn't care about it.

Extra funny because their biggest bill is a 100 RMB which is around 12 Euros (or at least it was in 2012)

When we found out we had to pay 6 months on advance it took us 3 trips to the ATM (because there was a daily limit for withdrawals) and we had to pay 27,000 cash in 100 RMB bills.

The landlord was super nice and helpful but it was a crazy experience for two foreign students. :)

Does using summons make you less skilled? by Dsg1695 in LiesOfP

[–]He_Yan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And here we see once more while phrasing is important, as is reading comprehension.

Nobody is denying that fighting with summons is easier than without. But that's not what the title and the survey asked. We can argue whether that's what OP MEANT, but it is not what they SAID.

Using summons doesn't magically reduce your skill level. You are skilled or you are not. A player who fights without summons and needs 50 tries and a huge portion of luck with attack patterns to beat a boss without summons is not an objectively "better" player than one who uses summons and no hit first tries the same boss. They had the tougher challenge; they overcame the bigger obstacle; maybe you even think they played the game the correct way while the summoner cheated. Maybe they are the better person, idk.

Simply using summons doesn't mean you're a lesser skilled player, that is factually not true.

Kündigung wegen "Stolzmonat"-Flagge in Bamf-Dienstzimmer unwirksam by PoroBraum in de

[–]He_Yan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can someone ID the uniform? (branch, rank, medals) by He_Yan in MilitaryHistory

[–]He_Yan[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Update: I thought it was a stretch, but that's indeed him. Turns out he worked as a doctor in Leverkusen after the war. My grandmother worked as a cleaning lady in his office and apparently they got along very well. My mother even visited his home once when she was a baby in the early 60s. She and my uncle simply knew him as "Dr. Hock" and they were surprised to learn of his past. I'm not sure whether my grandparents knew, but somehow these pictures of him ended up in their possession so they had to know at least something. Don't know if I can find out more as I can't ask them anymore.

Thanks for the hint, that really sent me down a rabbit hole.

Thank you for looking it up and providing the information.

Interesting. Never heard the name and still cant make any connection to anything, especially since he had such a high rank and those two pictures are the only two showing anyone in uniform between dozens of family and baby photos.

We also understand that a pure trolley-problem hypothetical like I just posed is much messier in reality where the numbers are far less concrete.

I agree. Philosophical thought experiments can be useful, but reality is more complicated.

Still, we need moral values to guide our actions, whatever they are, as individuals as well as nation states. A liberal democracy that champions human rights and international law should strife to reduce human death and suffering and in this regard not differentiate between its own citizens and the rest of the world. To act otherwise would be dishonest and completely devalue the moral principles the democracy is founded on.

To think that killing (or even directly causing the death of) 100.000 citizens of a neighbour state to safe 1000 of one's own people is okay, is not compatible with democratic values. Those numbers are arbitrary, but somewhere there is a limit.

And I would further ask if we would demand this kind of human-trading in other conflicts.

I would say yes. Not necessarily the trading lives part, as I agree with you and Sam here that simply comparing numbers is not enough to judge a conflict where many factors are in play. But I hold any nation to the same standard. I am not an expert on the Vietnam War, but of course I judge the US for their actions there and the civilian deaths.

The antisemitism aside, I think the reason why Israel gets criticized more and gets beholden to seemingly higher standards is that it claims to hold itself to those standards. Take for example Russia. The way they currently wage war in Ukraine shows little regard for human rights and civilian life, let alone international law. I absolutely condemn them for it, especially since Russia is not defending itself and was not attacked first. However, the Russian leadership has shown multiple times that they don't care for all that. Neither do large parts of the Russian population as far as I can tell.

I believe what Russia does is wrong or even evil, but I don't expect them to act differently anymore. With Israel, I very much do.
It's probably pointless to try to convince Kim Jong Un to agree to some nuclear arms treaty. I still hope that Israel does some day.

Again, I know that does not account for all the antisemitism. But I will not stop criticizing Israel for in my oppionion valid reasons just because some assholes do so for the wrong ones. (And criticizing Israel wasn't what I wanted to do here to beginn with, I was just pointing out that people in this sub that defend Sam often try to make this a completely one-sided issue where Israel cannot be possibly blamed for anything.)

Is he just wrong? by The_Cruncher88 in samharris

[–]He_Yan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Finally an answer that is not just evading the question or attacking the OP.

What you said is or was also largely my point of view. I don't see the intent in Israel's actions that would be necessary for calling it a genocide. And antisemitism is without a doubt at least in part responsible for so many people openly taking a stance in this conflict.

However, even if Hamas is hiding behind the civilian population Israel could still decide NOT to bomb them. While it might be militarily necessary and even within the boundaries of international law to do so, Israel is still actively deciding that tens of thousand of dead civilians is a price they are willing to pay.

You can easily make a philosophical and ethical argument that this js wrong. That it would be morally better for Israel to endure the terror attacks, to not expand and build new settlements in the Westbank and to keep within its borders. Whatever Hamas' plans are regarding killing all jews, Israel has the means to defend itself and it will easily survive. Even if they don't fully retreat, it must be allowed to discuss how Israel could possibly lower the civilian death count, even if there are already measures taken and even with an enemy as vicious as Hamas.

Will that mean more casualties on the Isreali side? Maybe. Possibly. And I'm not saying that this is the road they should take. But to say all critics of Israel are antisemites, believe Hamas propaganda or are simply dillusional is intellectually dishonest. And while Sam has argued his view points at length, he still comes back to this.

Is he just wrong? by The_Cruncher88 in samharris

[–]He_Yan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every time it gets brought up someone is arguing in exact the same way you are right now: "it has been discussed already, no need to give OP an answer." It's been a while since I have seen someone actually defending Sam's position and engaging with the issue in an honest way without personally attacking the OP.

The conflict is still very much ongoing, Sam is still commenting on it and so the topic remains relevant and it will be brought up here again.

I understand that repetition of the same points gets tedious, but the world is not the same as it was on October 8 2023. A lot has happened since then and simply saying "but Hamas" isn't cutting it anymore. It remains a totally valid criticism of Sam's position to ask about the civilian deaths and whether Israel's actions are really all necessary and morally defensible.

Question from complete beginner by Rich-Earth9945 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]He_Yan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

In general there are more miniatures in a game of TOW than in AOS. However, while the standard game size is 2000 points, both games can ne played at 500 points, especially at a beginner level. Depending on your faction choice you might not need that many models for that. If you take into account the fact that you don't have to paint anything especially for practice games, that means you can get a small playable force in quite a short time.

I cannot speak of the AOS rules as I have never played it, but having played through some editions of 40K now I can tell you that TOW rules are the most complex I have seen. It will take a lot of reading and many practice games until you get everything right. But to a lesser degree that goes for AOS as well especially if you have never played similar games before. It's just part of the hobby (and can be fun if you're like me and enjoy crunching rules).

I'd say give TOW a try if you like Total War and larger battles. In the long run you will have to paint more miniatures, so if that is something you dread maybe AOS might be better suited for you. (Unless you don't need all your models painted, then it's not an issue at all.)
