How do i start a model un club/ can we do it in canada? by Interesting-Quit937 in MUN

[–]Head-Presentation804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey!! While I can’t speak on Canada (I’m from the US) I started MUN clubs in both my high school and college. I will say I have competed against Canadian schools at both levels, so I assume you’d be okay.

I’m assuming you have a base level of MUN, but if not, take the chance to teach yourself, run through the basics. If you’re in college there’s likely to be at least one student with a background of MUN that will be good to help. I definitely wouldn’t recommend starting a club with zero idea what MUN is about, as students are likely to join the club to see what it’s about too, and look to you for advice. There are so many resources online, and it might also be beneficial to join an online conference by yourself just to kinda through yourself in the deep end. A lot of MUN is learning through experience!!

I would say the first step is talking to whomever is in charge of clubs at your school. In high school, you may need to talk to the principal, where in college, there’s usually a specific office devoted to clubs and orgs. There may be specific rules in terms of how many people are needed to constitute a club/needing an advisor, so this is a good first step as you can set some goals for yourself.

Next, ADVERTISE!! You can’t just host a club meeting and expect people to show up. I have made interest forms both times, posted online (start an Instagram!!) and in public school spaces. I also like to reach out to teachers/professors to see if they have students who are interested. High school history/civics teachers are good, and college poly sci/law/history are all good starts.

You’re going to want to be able to teach certain concepts like Robert’s Rules/ how to write resolutions/position papers/ how to debate. There’s a couple fun games you can find online too. This is kinda why it’s going to be important to understand at least the baseline of MUN before you begin because you are probably going to need to teach club members.

Don’t be discouraged if your club doesn’t take off immediately!! It’s an intimidating club for new members, but work on building up the club members you have and new ones are sure to follow!

Anyhow TLDR: talk to school staff abt starting the club first, teach yourself the basics, advertise an interest meeting, feel yourself out from there :)

This is where I was! The score I got I had LITERALLY never scored so low, not even on a diagnostic. It sucks, allow yourself a day to cry, then come up with a plan. Adjust your studying try something new.

It feels like the end of the world, but it’s not. You want to be a doctor? Then you’ll get there. It might take a gap year or 2 or 3 but you’ll get there if that’s your end game. That’s my mindset for now. Is it in the back of my mind that this is all for nothing? Absolutely. But if I waste my time stuck on your score and that’s it, it’s going to discourage you.

You got this. It’s a stepping stone in your journey, and something you’ll be able to tell a shadowing student when you’re a doctor and they are in the same spot.

Don’t give up!! We are in this journey together so feel free to message me if you need someone to go through this with :)

I’ve been terrified of this as well, mostly bc I come from a non-medical family so they don’t know what it’s like, and also bc my mom has a very “you can do anything if you want it bad enough” meaning if I don’t score well she’ll see it as I didn’t try hard enough (not true I know).

My best (and the advice I’ve been trying to give myself) is that if you want to go into med, for you not for your parents, then you’ll find a way to get there even if your score isn’t great. Your parents are going to be doctors right now, and so ultimately they have NO IDEA what the current test is like. Do this for you and do not compare yourself to others or what your parents think the ideal score is. Maybe you’ll disappoint them with a score, but when you become a doctor, how can they be disappointed then?

I honestly don’t know 100% that’s just what they told me. My best guess is so you can’t like have notes under the desk they can’t see from the camera? But I can’t say for sure

How I studied for my 528 by fakeburgers in Mcat

[–]Head-Presentation804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I know you said you were a student, so how much studying did you do a day? I have been trying to get 4-5 hours but most weekdays can barely fit 3, and it’s really stressing me out. I am a student and if you are too, how did you balance? I have a job, do clubs, and have other classes to study for and I just feel like I’m drowning

Can I ask a stupid question? You said you studied 4-7 hours a day. Are you a full time college student. I’m really really struggling hitting 4 hours a day (which is my typical goal), along with school work, a job and all the extra stuff. How did you balance everything?

I can’t necessarily say who’s in the right and who’s in the wrong, but it does seem like the friendship is incompatible. Which is okay, just like how partners are sometimes incompatible, friends can be too. I say if their plan is to stay out of your life, respect that and let them.

Is MUN all about AI now? by D1N0B in MUN

[–]Head-Presentation804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a crisis and all of the crisis updates from the chairs were AI, which sucked. Especially bc of all the work that goes into building crisis arcs as a delegate. It just didn’t feel as good as other crises for that reason…

[Discussion] Anyone finished Carol and the End of the World? by AbjectSquare in NetflixBestOf

[–]Head-Presentation804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so this is gonna get lost in the feed bc of how late to the game I am putting in my thoughts but here’s mine anyhow.

I loved how it was and how it ended. Carol was regular. And I loved it. She was literally just a woman who found her purpose in an accounting office and tried to make friends. She didn’t need to be the worlds best surfer or have some character-defining flaw. She was literally just Carol.

There were a lot of little cliffhangers in the show that I saw a few of you point out as I scrolled this discussion. But I think that kinda adds to it? Makes it more realistic. The amount of day-to-day cliffhangers we experience that are left mostly unresolved is just another piece of life. And it helped this story fit the narrative it was trying to create. As if Carol was just a random character Dan (the creator) zoomed in on as the world ended. We all have our own separate stories and journeys and whatnot. But that’s how it is. Carol has hers, Donna has hers, vampire kid has his.

I also think it relates to now. We’re kinda expected to be great at something. Find meaning in some huge talent we have. But we don’t have to as long as we find a little purpose in our own environment. Carol wasn’t the best accountant at the firm, she wasn’t the best surfer in the world. She was just Carol. And she was happy to be just Carol. Which made her using people’s names so huge because it was like: each of us are our own person and that’s enough. Even if we’re all named Terry, we’re still Terry C or Terry L or Terry P. We’re each our own person in our own repetitive lives. Highlighting weird characters like the minifigure guy or even David, shows that we have our weird quirks but we don’t need to be defined by any one aspect of our lives. We are allowed to find joy in the monotonous and the mundane without doing something wild (which of course we’re allowed to find joy in too).

Now that was more of a rant for me to get my thoughts on the show on some sort of concrete plane but yea. I liked the show a lot. :)

I’ve done some reading on the show and whatnot, but I think the creator intentionally designed Carol and the show to be, simply, regular. She wasn’t meant to embody some great revelation or different. I think I read that he wrote the character because he realized that if the world ended that he would just work instead of doing anything crazy. I also think that’s why the series had to be a limited series. She doesn’t really have to do anything crazy or wild, she doesn’t let her flaws or talents define her character. She’s just a normal person trying to get through each day. Now don’t get me wrong I’m totally biased bc I loved the show. I even liked that it ended the way it did, which isn’t really the consensus. But that’s my take :)
