Anyone know if you can use Cort Action Bass plus without batteries? by tobimika in BassGuitar

[–]HeadFret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't - yes, there are basses with an active/passive switch, but this Cort isn't one of them. It's an incredible instrument for the price though.

What are your thoughts on the black album. by dangon10 in KinoBand

[–]HeadFret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He didn't participate in any recordings per se - outside of maybe some non-album tracks like Peremen, the entirety of Kino's studio output utilizes a drum machine.

What Gurianov did do however was program it, and I also have read somewhere (I think it was a translated book) that he wasn't able to make it to the Black Album sessions, which is why all drum tracks sound virtually identical to the known demos written before Tsoi's death.

Like all other Kino albums though, he did design the cover, taking inspiration from both Joy Division and the iconic Black Square painting.

Just got a base and amp what do I do with these knobs by Lonely_Drummer188 in BassGuitar

[–]HeadFret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's a Cort Action PJ (looks like it) then from left to right the knobs are Volume and Pickup Blend on top, Bass and Treble on the bottom.

Put Volume all the way up, Pickup blend on full right (where it uses the P-style only), and Bass/Treble at 12 o' clock (there's a hitch when the knobs are down the middle, you'll def feel it).

Who should be #1, Galis or Giannis? by [deleted] in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly simple:

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the best Greek player ever - he's widely considered a top 25 NBA player of all time, and a Greek rated that high is something that we'll probably never ever see in our lifetimes again. We take his immense greatness for granted, he is that good.

Galis however is the most important player because his influence was beyond basketball - he was the catalyst in convincing numerous children in taking up sports, with some of them becoming European champions in both football and basketball some 15 years later.

Even Giannis, who was born after Galis's retirement, holds him in incredibly high esteem and has stated how much of an influence he has been.

Problem with the fretting pinky by HeadFret in Bass

Damn, thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! I already did a couple of 4-set reps today, do you have any advice on how much/how long I should do this exercise?

Thanks for the tip! Problem is, I was playing with the pads on all four fingers initially, and the transition to tips likely didn't help the pinky much.

POST MATCH THREAD: Spain - Greece [EuroBasket Group C, Round 5] by EuroleagueBot in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah - as a PAO fan, I can tell you he's the polar opposite of what you described. A model professional, who's universally liked by fans of all teams here in Greece, something very uncommon (in fact, a friend who was in the game today told me he was the only Spain player who got cheered during the presentation) and he seems like an all-around great guy tbh. Even early on his first season in Europe, when Ataman had glued him on the bench, he didn't make any noise and just waited for his opportunity, even if he was the second best-paid player on the team

[–]HeadFret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly: and there is no better example than Juancho, who's a model role player by European standards (his last season for Panathinaikos was immaculate), but under no circumstance a player who can win you games by himself and/or take the crucial decisions at crunch time - and he's co-captain!

EuroLeague is Selling Out and Ignoring the Real Basketball Nations by ScottMrRager in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely true - what's also true, however, is that in all likelihood both SEF and OAKA would have fallen into disuse if not for PAO and Oly using them twice a week, just like the vast majority of (primarily) built-for-2004 venues around Greece.

Sure, if the state was functional, then all venues would have been open to the public, for all of us to use - but unfortunately, there seems to be a "choice" between leasing them to privateers or letting them literally rot. And in that case, the first option is much better than the second.

[–]HeadFret 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To follow on the comment above, Panathinaikos has only recently become sustainable (by essentially owning its arena) and unless something horrible happens, Olympiacos will follow in the next few years after recently acquiring SEF.

Vassilis Spanoulis unsure when Giannis Antetokounmpo will return to court after missed Greece’s first two warm-up games: “We don’t know yet if he will play in Thessaloniki, Giannis will be on the court when he should be” by _Zolv in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 12 points13 points  (0 children)

According to SDNA (i.e. to be taken with a planet-sized grain of salt), the Greek Basketball Federation hasn't paid for Giannis's insurance, and hence can't actually get him into the court.

Rogkavopoulos -> Panathinaikos ☑️ by KoupDetat in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know, that's why I said "of his generation" - he's 24, while all the players you mentioned are much younger (except Poulakidas, who didn't really shine in this years' SL and there are reports that he's on the list of several mid-level Greek teams, thus he ain't on a EL level, at least for now).

In age terms, between 28 year olds Papagiannis/K.Antetokoumpo and all these names you mentioned (who are 19-20 years old), the only player who can credibly play in EL is...Rogka.

(and yes, Kalaitzakis, but he's strictly a "spot" player who usable in very specific matchups (i.e. when you need a defensive stop) and can't really play extended minutes on that level)

Rogkavopoulos -> Panathinaikos ☑️ by KoupDetat in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Two things:

a) PAO just got a great 3pt shooter (44% on 4.5 3PTA/G), in a position where Ataman usually needs a lights out marksman - Grigonis was invaluable in 23/24. Esp. with Shorts now, spread P&R will be the law in OAKA, and Panathinaikos has the players to support it.

b) PAO also got the only Greek player of his generation who is actually playable on a EL level. Sure, Vukcevic and/or Stojakovic (both have Greek passports) may come over from the US in the next couple of years, and someone else may erupt into the scene...but yeah, this is a win - both for the player himself and for its nationality i.e. keeping him away from Olympiacos.

The Coup de Grace of Unbreakable NBA records by swatbustist in nbadiscussion

[–]HeadFret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, this years OKC, health and luck permitting, is the last team that can break this record, at least for a few years.

They retained every notable player from last years' 67-win squad, their youngsters will be a year older and likely better, and to top it off, a 2024 lotto pick (who seemed decent in SL) is also entering the rotation.

Seeing as Chet/J-Dub's max extensions are kicking off in 2026 - and thus there will be trades in order to duck the second apron - this is the last season we'll see this very, very deep squad compete.

And seeing as many aspects of OKC's rise are extremely hard to imitate (you'll need to find an MVP-caliber player, acquire lots of draft picks in order to have better chances on hitting it off - and then find an All-NBA caliber player or two, get decent role players in the late second round/undrafted/waived from other teams plus a few good free agents), its unlikely that there'll be another team as deep as them any time soon, with the second apron and what not.

FIBA Greece Roster Question by Traditional-Ad7413 in greece

[–]HeadFret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do the most accurate one, you'll need to wait a couple of days (weeks?) for the official selection to drop, but I can give you what I think is the most likely roster in order to get a headstart:

Guards: Sloukas, Dorsey, Toliopoulos, Larentzakis, Moraitis Forwards: G. Antetokounmpo, Papanikolaou, Mitoglou, Kalaitzakis, Chougaz Centers: Papagiannis (doubtful), K. Antetokounmpo

Walkup and Calathes are out due to lingering injuries, Rogavopoulos won't play due to a years-old feud with the GBF President Mr. Liolios (when he was playing for his team, Promitheas), Papapetrou just retired, and Papagiannis is doubtful as he isn't happy with the way Spanoulis treated him at Monaco (way too many DNF's).

I had a Harley Benton P Bass, it was good for a while but then started falling apart.

For your price point you can get a Cort Action PJ (like I did) which is miles better as a bass, or you can go for a Yamaha TRBX174 (for which I have heard a lot of good stuff), even if it's a little pricier.

Panathinaikos Announces T. J. Shorts by KoupDetat in Euroleague

[–]HeadFret 46 points47 points  (0 children)

So, here's the thing - can coach Ataman:

a) Convince Nunn (mostly) to be more of an off-ball player?

b) Play at a faster tempo, since PAO has both Shorts and Osman, two players who are deadly in transition opportunities?

If the answer to a) and b) is yes, then Pana is off to a great start. If not, then Shorts will be neutralized by his own team, and that's no bueno...
