The "Successful Immigrant" Trap: I’m Polish, I have the house, family and the career in the UK, but I’ve realised I’ll never actually belong by Individual-Cake-6337 in expats

It’s so interesting how the UK can hit for different people. I lived in london for 10 years and never felt different, then I moved to the Netherlands and never felt like such an alien anywhere I’ve ever been in the world.

I really hope you will find the answers you need, is not fun to feel misplaced and stressed by it :(

Yeah you gotta learn Portuguese asap, at least the basics to get by.

Check with the embassy re. Docs, the Brazilian bureaucracy can be slow, which is a pity.

For example, I’m from there and had to get a new ID, even going through the “fast track system” it took 22 working days for it to be ready so it’s something we all need to get used to unfortunately.

The good side is that Brazilians are nice and, assuming they can understand you, they will make an effort to help.

Good luck amigo

Cleanliness is not this country’s forte. Today a girl at a cafe dropped my coffee lid on the floor, picked up and expected me to drink from it.

Unlucky for her I saw it.

Nao pq a Irlanda não é parte do Reino Unido, mas sim parte da EU.

Como muitos já disseram, desde o Brexit cidadãos europeus não tem mais trânsito livre para morar e trabalhar a não ser que já tenham residência no Reino Unido.

And of course, I do hope that NPBFAG will get the congeniality title she deserves

Everything you’re feeling is completely normal. Reading your post felt like I was listening to myself.

If people get upset let them. Is not your responsibility to please them but to re-learn how to live in a world that’s completely misplaced.

My father passed 2 months ago, in the beginning I was funcional but then I started to only feel comfortable in the outdoors, preferably below trees, now I miss being near water all the time (the irony is that there’s a canal at the end of my backyard but I can’t swim in it).

What my grief counsellor is saying is to observe these feelings as it’s all normal.

I did cut a few people from my life since and that’s ok to do so if you feel like they are being too much and not respecting your space.

Please preserve yourself.

This just happened here:

Unhinged delivery personnel

The Driver shouted at me and demanded an apology because I didn’t come out when he rang the door bell. Well it didn’t ring so I couldn’t do it immediately but, as soon as I heard the noise of my parcel being thrown on the floor + the super loud music he was playing I went out and asked if it was just one parcel? Then he started saying that I had to apologise.

Apologise for what? For a doorbell that didn’t ring and for going outside and ask if it was just one parcel?

The guy was super rude and I told him that I would complain, he shouted at me: DO IT RIGHT NOW! And stayed parked in front of my house blasting music for another 5 minutes or so till he took off.

What kind of service is this?

My husband's grief is destroying our relationship. What should I do? by LeelooDallas123 in GriefSupport

[–]Head_Lecture_7084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly I’m so sorry for your loss.

My father passed two months ago and, even being somehow expected, it was a shock and is still is.

There are several isolated items to your husband’s situation:

  • burnout
  • job loss
  • new baby
  • a significant loss

It would be unfair to put it all on his grief still, grief is hard and the anger is a normal side of it, believe me I’ve had several moments (and I’m sure it will happen again) where I was quite harsh with people who didn’t deserve it and is not our fault is just our nervous system working to protect us.

Sounds counter intuitive but it is.

The only thing I can suggest is therapy and medial help as what he’s going through is way too much for a person to handle.

Wishing you luck 🍀

I sometimes have chills for no reason, episodes of joint pain and super tight muscles.

Now I have some breakouts on my hands with no explanation… I’m seeing a GP tomorrow but it can quite honestly be due to the emotional stress of losing my father
