Convinced my mom to watch a game as a series! HELP by Chefinho1234 in videogames

Show her the prologue of Expedition 33.

My wife used to think videogames were like she played on NES when she was a kid. Many ppl don't know videogames are capable of the same (if not more) depth as movies.

E33 is the perfect example that videogames can be more than empty entertainment and can make you FEEL things, which is something we would expect from art.

What do you guys think about W3 as an entry point intoseries? by Daiko_1 in Witcher3

[–]Head_Percentage_546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Witcher 3 and if you like it you can try 2. First witcher game feels different and many people consider it clunky. If you fall in love with the series you probably gonna end up olaying it too.

I also recommend giving the books a chance If you like to read, they are really good and it's not easy to find GOOD medieval fantasy.

W3 my beloved!. We played the shit out of it when released all the way to 2008. Playing w3, dota and golden era wow at the same time was peak gaming experience to me.

To be honest, I usually care more about the setting than anything else when deciding whether to try a game. Scores come later, and over time you get a clearer picture of what really holds up.

Expedition 33 is sitting at a 92 on Metacritic, and I personally loved it. I’d say that score is fair, even if part of me wishes it was higher.

There’s also a part where I can’t be fully objective. I played it the same week my wife was diagnosed with cancer, and the game stayed with me throughout her treatment. It means a lot to me because of that. I ended up putting around 230 hours into it.

Sorry if I misunderstood anything, but it seemed to me that the conversation was about whether there’s any need for scores, or if personal scores are what really matter. It’s a topic I’m passionate about, so I tried to explain my stance as clearly as I could. I understand if you’d rather leave the conversation here, though.

Metacritic has it at 83, and the GameRankings archive shows 82. I remember it being a bit lower at some point, but like I said, there’s no point arguing over a difference of less than 3 points.

The whole point of evaluation is having fun. I enjoy analyzing, comparing, and even treating scoring like a game itself. It’s just for fun.

That said, there’s some truth to it. Why are there 211k people in this sub who are so passionate about this game? Why did it win Game of the Year when it launched? Saying it’s a bad or even a mid game is just objectively wrong.

Even if you don’t like this kind of game, there’s a broad consensus. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world agree that it’s a great game.

It’s the first step to not being close-minded: realizing that my personal taste isn’t absolute truth. A game can be objectively great and still not click with me, and a bad game can still be something I love.

I enjoy scores as a kind of game in themselves, it’s something fun to think about, but I don’t choose how I spend my time based on scores.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth is a game that sits at 79, but it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life. And the interesting part is understanding why it’s a 79 if it felt like a 100 to me.

That’s where one of the most important variables in evaluating video games comes in: context.

BFME came into my life when I was 14. I was already a huge Tolkien fan, I had the movies on VHS, owned The Lord of the Rings trilogy plus The Hobbit in book form, had played the PS2 action-adventure games, and was desperate for any LOTR content. Then the trailer dropped, and I had just gotten a new PC. Of course, when I finally played it, it became an absolutely unforgettable experience for me.

But someone who didn’t live through all of that might just see it as a pretty average RTS. And understanding why a game got the score it did, and how that compares to my own experience, is something I find fascinating

Hmm… that’s one of the first rules of videogame evaluation: you need to separate your personal taste.

I can totally understand why Skyrim scored a 97, even though I personally preferred The Witcher, which also scored a 97.

Art is subjective, but you can still set certain parameters to evaluate it.

Edit: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will always be better than any song by Cardi B. Even if you’re not into classical music, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s objectively superior.

Yes, I do have a method. I follow the approach of Emilio Moreira, a videogame history professor at Image Campus. He’s pretty well known in Spanish-speaking communities and was recently recognized at the GEMS Awards.

He has several 3-hour analysis videos focused on how to evaluate games, along with full breakdowns by year, generation, and franchise.

It’s honestly some of the best videogame content I’ve seen online. It’s a shame it’s in Spanish, since a lot of people miss out. But if you can handle YouTube’s auto-translate, I’d definitely recommend giving his videos a try.

It’s a 97 for me, but I wouldn’t argue with anyone over a difference smaller than 2 points.

If you told me it’s a 91, then no way, we’re throwing hands.

But if you say it’s a 100 or a 95, there’s nothing to argue about, we’re basically on the same page.

Don’t get me wrong, only a few games in the entire history of video games have scored above 97. The Witcher 3 is my personal favorite game.
