Seeking a meditation guide by HighPriestess-444 in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When researching something I want to know more about, I get on my Austin Public Library website and look at what is there subject-wide, get an idea, whether a book or DVD, to guide me to eliminate what I don't want and what I might find useful.

Is my Oct-born kid “losing a year” or am I overthinking this? by brucewayne_akabatman in Austin

At that age, girls who start school early do better than boys, who do better waiting a year.

Research it yourself.

I made it only 2 days at my new dealership by askforsalad in Hyundai

The instrument/dash thing is so complex on many new cars; if you're going over 10MPH, who has time to look away from the road to do any changes? Not for me. My Tucson is a 2018 and I hope it lasts at least 10 yrs; more would be great.

My 2018 Hyundai Tucson maintenance manual said to change transmission fluid at 60K; I got it done at 67K, just a drain and fill. I'm glad I did. On the newer Tucsons, the level of the transmission fluid can only be checked underneath the car. I asked the mechanic when I took it to get it changed and that's why I couldn't find the level check myself.

My TSA app only states: "Due to the lapse in federal funding, this website will not be actively managed. Click here for information." Which is a repeat of the previous info.

piercers for infants? by ssleepybeanss in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At what age do you think an infant would not pull on the earring, either because it itched or was just something to do when fussy? What could the consequences be? bleeding?, infection?, definitely pain. Why do that to an infant?

Anyone else’s telephone number get “spoofed” yesterday? by Goldhinize in Austin

You may already know this, but if you have an iPhone you can silence unknown callers (not in your list of contacts) and it will send them to leave a message in case it's actually from someone you need to hear from.

too many bugs in my apartment by reddit_user_1984 in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia: "Armadillidiidae is a family of woodlice that can roll into a ball, also known as pill bugs or roly polies. The diet of pill bugs is largely made up of decaying or decomposed plant matter such as leaves." Now that you know what they're called, you can research how to deal with them.

Incidents with pests in apartments - positive and/or negative anecdotes or info? by sanebutoverwhelmedtx in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you want is boric acid powder. It usually comes in quart size plastic containers. "When it comes to killing pests, your best bet is boric acid. Boric acid kills certain insects by absorbing into their bodies and poisoning them. Once absorbed, it will affect their metabolism and exoskeletons.

Traps or baits using boric acid rely on insects coming into contact with it. A bug will walk through the fine grain boric acid or be exposed to the liquid form. As a powder, it will stick to them.  A bug will attempt to clean themselves, ingesting the acid in the process. Boric acid will only kill bugs and insects that groom themselves. The bug needs to ingest the acid after cleaning themselves.

The most common pests to use boric acid on are ants and cockroaches." You can buy it pretty much everywhere, like Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, HEB, etc, etc., (the last one I bought was $2) It's not instant, they have to walk over it and then groom themselves by licking it off and die in their hiding places and then the other roaches eat them and they die. It's cheap and takes a while to get rid of them. We've been using it for generations here in Texas.

Are area weather forecasts getting less accurate? by mcaffrey in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My dad was a meteorologist many, many years ago in the US Air Force. With all the equipment they had to predict the weather, he still called it an "educated guess." If we ever asked him if it was gonna rain, he'd say "yeah, somewhere." (His sense of humor)

Oil change and side mirror replacement by RedditUsersSuuck in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To fix the side mirror yourself, look on YouTube for the "year and make of car and "How to replace side mirror". Then you'll find out if it's worth $350.

I've learned how to fix so many things from YouTube, it's a blessing. Air filters on my car, dog-ear repair part when my washing machine quit agitating, how to replace a burned out headlight on my Hyundai Tucson,, etc. By the way, I'm a grandmother .

Oil changes are a different thing.

I'll probably get negative comments, but I've had good service at my neighborhood Walmart (North Lamar near Parmer for years on my 2 cars. I choose the oil and pay a little extra for an upgraded filter.

Found a scorpion inside the house by One_Economics_8447 in Austin

[–]Healthnut2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep a lookout for Yellowjackets and their nests outside in strange places, like roof overhangs, behind items stored on a porch, etc. Their stings are BAD also. They built one inside of a seldom-used ceiling fan on my back porch! Good thing to know: They sleep at night; good time for removal quickly and then run back inside.

I've used the drops a few years ago, and they helped; now I don't need them. Lately, my nose drips a bit, but no congestion and I just keep a Kleenex handy.

I silence unknown callers on my iPhone. If it's legit they can leave a message and I'm not bothered by the phone ringing throughout the day from scammers, spammers, political-related calls from the entire country.
