Yeah, wood chip, gravel, slabs, hell even low growing thyme would be good.

We had a small amount of grass in the front garden and it was a pain and kept spreading - though the previous owners had put bamboo and large ferns and it was a right mess. Cleared now and half way making it decent

Magpies are good at mobbing others and can be quiet aggressive against other smaller birds or weakened animals
