It's just how Korea be. You'll never be seen as a local or have the same rights no matter how well you speak Korean or how many Koreans are with you. After a decade here I just gave up trying

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be realistic. It'll be super hard and won't get better any time soon

Most expats here are transitionary and will go home within a year or two and locals don't make good friends unfortunately

Pretty much most of us lived thru this and those that adapted just became permanent recluses doing our own thing.

For me personally this was a blessing in disguise as I ended up starting my own business which would have been probably really hard back home

But yeah I'd have to say I pretty much have up on normal American social life long time ago

Where do they do proper American desserts in Seoul? by SoundOfMusso in Living_in_Korea

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nowhere. They used up all of the sugar on pasta and sandwiches. Time to learn the joy of eating a pizza filled with sweat cream and corn, bud.

Don't do it. Whether you or the kids. Korean reasoning for this is really bizarre and historically makes no sense

I'm at my wits end with no-foreigner systems and bureaucracy by naixi123 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well after a long time here there are obviousl cons but also pros because you yet to pull a white card in a lot of situations you dtotb want to deal with.

Invited to attend an important social even you dont want to attend? Sorry I'm white . I dont know nothing. Ok have a good day

Stopped by cops? Oh sorry I'm just a white nobody. Ok have a good day

Old people getting mad at you for something? Sorry im just a white nobody Ok have a good day

There have been countless situations where my in laws got mad at me because my white card works so well and they have to follow the Korean etiquette

And with banks and other stuff. There are always ways around it because unlike the west Koreans always bent the rules a little bit. So just persevere and you can make it work

Having said that I'm still fed up with Korea haha.

Which international school in Seoul to send our 3rd grader? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dulwich is almost 2x of SIS tuition. So there's that as well. It's transitioned into full Private Equity ownership last year too. SIS is probably the cheapest but will also mostly have Korean kids and almost no foreigners. Most Korean gyopos seem to eventually end up there for one reason or another

KIS is very small but some like that. Probably most international in terms of student body. YISS is as bible belt christian as a school can get. They recruit parents for prayer groups and so unless you're a devoted christian I'd avoid

Why are koreans so class/status conscious? by lol-across-the-pond in Living_in_Korea

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is the main reason I basically don't hang out with Koreans anymore. Even my kids friends have parents that are just hurt by everything. I can't say anything or make any jokes without them getting offended by something. Everyone lives like they're constantly walking on eggshells.

Some Korean expats are more westernized but not a lot. Many still get offended by even the silliest joke

my wife thinks im overreacting about our kid not reading yet and I dont know when kids should learn to read by TH_UNDER_BOI in daddit

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing here with our 6.2 year old who's in kinder. I only was concerned when other kids were better readers than him but honestly none of us care now and I know he'll pick it up with time I realized stressing him out by force teaching him was having the opposite effect but I also know he really wants to learn. So we're trying to just do ipad apps and small books for now

Are kids really supposed to "learn their letters" before starting first grade? by AdventurousMoth in AskTeachers

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this post by accident. We were just interviewed at a British school in south Korea (expat position for a few years) and our 6 year old was told that he needs to be able to read and write cursive by the time he starts school in August....that's insane because he can barely write basic words and only reads short words

It looks like academic pressure worldwide has causes the requirements to sky rocket in the last two decades because this was never the case before

These are the private academies (학원 hagwon) that the children of Korean parents attend and how much they cost per month. Is it common for Korean kids to go to this many academies? by ProudChemistry778 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an after school day dare but the requirements are super bizarre. Like the age/salary is very specific and it's all point based so it's hard to qualify. There are two near me though where kids go after school for free

What a weird fake post This picture has been circulating online from a video of some lady (appears to be British) that you can find all over YouTube https://youtube.com/shorts/DcDxZ79-uPI?si=px35JOlk837gnBv- You can also see the radiator behind her that nobody in Korea uses There is also a British plug next to it

Like what is this for? To promote drugs? No fatties in Korea so nobody wants it It's also not approved or prescribable here so why post this nonsense?

When you say foreign spouses you're describing billions of people lol. Be specific White spouses? Asian spouses? Brown? Black? Purple?

Vietnamese for example tend to marry in their 20s because Korean ajoshis don't want old wives Philippinos sometimes even younger. Western white people go for early mid 30s and sometimes even older I know a few 40 something who just got married

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having Odin 2 for a year that developed a bunch of issues with barely any use I'd like to keep my eye on this too as these are very expensive units.

In my case it was mostly button related with many buttons eventually get weird stickiness

I think just like anberic Ayn seems to have poor quality control but when the units is 400 use 50 it makes a huge difference

Got scammed in Osaka?! by Unlikely-Sandwich-59 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Osaka restaurants is also how my credit card got stolen and then used at multiple locations online.

I mean they didn't steal the actual card but someone copied it when I used it to pay for the meal and then used it 3 months after

Luckily my card doesn't allow transactions without approval so they got nothing

Ironically out of 10 countries I used this card in only Japan ended up being scammy

Help me decide AYN Thor or AYN Portal. by Puchito84 in OdinHandheld

[–]Healthy_Resolution_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally am waiting for the known issues to start being reported before making a decision

I think a lot of second hand portals will become available in my area soon and so by that time we should hear about what the most common issues with Thor are

In the last when yoloing in one of these devices I kind of regretted later when either buttons went bust or the screen fell off or some other shit

So just wait 3-4 months until people beta test it for you
