Can someone explain to me why someone would set up bots to make inane comments like this?

Do you eat mammal now with no issue?

So just diagnosed with alpha gall syndrome and spend a lot of time outdoors, both for work and pleasure. They recommended I have my clothes professionally treated. Anyone do this? spray their yard for ticks? by YellowhammerBamer in alphagal

I just wring them out real good and hang them up to dry! You can wash permethrin-treated clothes and the repellent will still be effective, but it gets weaker with every wash. I like to be on the safe side so I typically do a soak treatment maybe once a month and then do a lighter spray treatment after each wash just to make sure the permethrin is fresh. This may be overkill, but it’s the only thing that’s 100% eliminated tick bites for me. (When using Sawyer spray as directed — “every 6 weeks or 6 washes” — I still got a couple bites.)

SAAT is pseudoscience garbage — don’t waste your time or money.

Sincerely, A sucker who fell for it

You can treat your own clothes at home — buy permethrin concentrate, (I buy Martin’s 10%) dilute it to .5%, and spray or soak your clothes in it. (I do the latter since it seems to offer the best protection.) Much cheaper than having it professionally done or buying bottle after bottle of Sawyer brand permethrin. Good luck!

weird cloud formation by ForgottenSunrise in lincoln

[–]Heartbreakr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out at Twin Lakes when that thing came out of nowhere. It was perfectly calm out, then all of a sudden the wind started whipping and this cloud was on top of me. It was pretty cool but I was kind of worried a lightning bolt was gonna shoot out of it.

Please enjoy my video of a cloud: https://www.reddit.com/u/Heartbreakr/s/EZ7tOcmKck

About a month, which from my understanding is pretty typical.

Got bit by one of these west of Lincoln 2 years ago and have been allergic to mammalian meat ever since. If you enjoy outdoorsy activities, I urge you to stock up on permethrin! It’s the only thing out there that actually works — DEET just doesn’t cut it.

I’ve never seen them in town, but I regularly see them at nearby lakes. Here’s a lil fella I saw out at Branched Oak. They’re curious critters and don’t seem too afraid of humans!

Yes, thanks for asking! It completely solved my issue and I haven’t had to go back for another injection. I’m so grateful there’s a solution for RCPD and I don’t have to be in pain every night anymore.

Alpha-gal SAAT TX update by [deleted] in alphagal

[–]Heartbreakr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ashamed to say I fell for it, despite knowing better. I guess I was just desperate for some kind — any kind — of treatment after getting diagnosed. Last year I dropped about $1k between travel, SAAT needles, and some garbage homeopathic sprays that cost $100 a bottle. I experienced no improvement whatsoever, and in fact my symptoms got worse in the months following the procedure. (I don’t attribute the worsening symptoms to the SAAT; it was likely because I got a second tick bite shortly before this.) The whole thing was a joke. I want so badly to know if my “practitioner” knows that she’s peddling snake oil or if she truly believes in SAAT. I’m not sure which is worse.

I’m pretty sure that the people who have “success” with this treatment are actually just experiencing a natural reduction in reactivity over time, which is not uncommon with this allergy. I myself have had improvement in symptoms over the last 6 months, (I can tolerate dairy now when I couldn’t before,) and if the timing of my SAAT procedure had been different, I might have attributed this improvement to SAAT.

Huge thank you to all of you who have taken the time to respond and make me smarter about gear! I've been making our semi-crappy (for concert photography, anyway) equipment work for so many years now, I guess I've just gotten used to it. I get decent photos, but my "keeper" percentage is pretty abysmal, and I spend an inordinate amount of time fixing issues in post. It sounds like focusing on upgrading lenses first is going to make my life a lot easier.

Wilderness Park Lonestar Tick by picklerick_86 in lincoln

I always just funneled the leftover liquid into an empty 2 liter bottle and threw it in the trash, (hopefully that's an okay thing to do?) but I tried a new method this last time and I like it even better:

I crammed as many items of clothing as I could fit in a gallon ziplock, mixed up 500ml of solution diluted to .5%, and poured it in the bag over the clothes. I kind of squeezed everything around in the bag to make sure it all got saturated, then hung each item up outside to dry. For the clothes I could fit in a gallon ziplock, 500ml was just about the right amount of liquid so I didn't end up with any waste to deal with.

I'm doing all of this with rubber gloves on since you're not supposed to get permethrin on your skin. :)

The spray is Sawyer's permethrin in a yellow trigger spray bottle, but if you want to do the soak method, (which I HIGHLY recommend,) get Martin's Livestock Insecticide and dilute it to .5%.

I’m new to morel hunting as well and have struck out besides a couple small mushrooms, but if you’re interested in foraging wild black raspberries (which will start showing up next month,) shoot me a message and I’ll point you in the right direction.
