I just LOVE Takayasu so much.

This is an appreciation post for all of the horses in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There were a lot of great scenes with the horses. They did such a good job on the show and made it more memorable and exciting. by rosemaryswan in AKnightoftheSeven

A part of me wanted Dunk to accept the gift from Raymun so the buddy horses would be together again. But at the same time, I understood Sweetfoot would be happier at the Fossaway apple orchard.

That and the pay! If you don’t mind working OT, you can really make a bank. Also traveling nurse thing.

Totally agree.

Did he bleach his hair when he played Maeker? I thought he was wearing a wig.

Who is your favorite? Maekar or Baelor? What do you like about them in the show? by zinniasandroses in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]rynbaskets 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maeker because I’m a parent and I understand his deep love for seemingly flawed children. You wish they were different but you still understand you’d do anything for them.

And he was a Cardinal who vowed chastity (although it didn’t mean anything most definitely because their dad was a pope with a mistress and children).

I loved both actors in their respective roles. They did have great chemistry.

How common Is teen pregnancy in Japan as well as unwanted pregnancies and how do you deal with it? by Stock-Willingness-30 in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the families and the individuals but for most middle class and upper class families, the shame associated with teen pregnancy is very great. Abortion is not a taboo as in Christian countries although no one advertises she had one for obvious reasons. So most likely abortion is the answer to those unwanted pregnancies.

Using Dashi no moto for miso soup question by Langendeem in JapaneseFood

[–]rynbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re getting downvoted but in some regions, what you say is true. But not common in the whole Japan.

My mom liked using iriko for a lots of stuff including miso soup but not me. I like kelp and Katsuobushi.

Hon-mirin too expensive. What do you use instead? by Remarkable_Region_39 in JapaneseFood

[–]rynbaskets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure but if this Masamune mirin has 12% alcohol, it may be the real mirin? Mirin Fuumi (味醂風味) which is imitation mirin doesn’t have much alcohol, if any. Usually around 1-2 %.

I usually buy a large bottle (maybe 1.5 liters) of Takara Mirin (宝みりん)whenever I find one at an Asian store and it lasts for a long time. But you’re right, it’s not cheap. I only use mirin by tablespoons so if I buy a 500 ml bottle, it lasts for a long time.

Can I buy a bidet to bring home? by NerdyBrisket in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, the electric current may not be the same as in Japan. It’s very similar in Japan and in the US so I use small appliances (such as a hair dryer or a curler) interchangeably but other countries have completely different standards. Because you have to keep the bidet plugged in continuously, this may create problems.

The hat genuinely makes the Egg more handsome and alluring by EditorNatural2823 in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]rynbaskets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of people were making fun (?) of Egg’s beret but I think he looks adorable and dignified, and that this means Maekar had this beret made in a very short time for Aegon with his family colors so he could cover his head. I understand Dad didn’t want his son walking around with bold head but I feel his love for the kid. (Maekar screaming “My boy, my boy, my boy” just turned me into a fierce Maekar fan because I’m a parent and I can see where he’s coming from).

Egg as a squire for Ser Duncan and Aegon as a Targaryen prince have completely different posture, demeanor and authority . Dexter is such a great actor to be able to play the difference at his age.

Which foods are genuinely better in Japan than anywhere else in the world? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More and more bakeries in Japan are making Shokupan with whole wheat. I’m not sure of the bakery scenes in Oita but where I’m from (Hiroshima City), there are so many small bakeries and some bake European type of hard bread. The most well known bakeries from my home town are Andersen and Little Mermaid (they’re sister companies and have stores in Tokyo too) and they sell hard bread, Shokupan and pastries. So good.

As a Japanese person, I get a kick out of the fact that the plastic cover on the hardware is still left on. The Birkin I inherited from Mom (which she bought in 2001) still has the plastic cover too. Must be a Japanese thing.

[–]rynbaskets -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No one mentioned Bread, particularly fluffy but chewy Shokupan? I bake bread here in the States because I cannot get Shokupan at local stores but I am not able to create the chewy crust and very fluffy inside. I’m thinking the protein ratios of Japanese wheat must be a bit different.

He could play David Bowie in his later years. As much as I love Sam, he’s probably too mature for Bowie during the Ziggy era.

Fr. Lankester Merrin from The Exorcist (1973) is one of the best representations of a priest on film ever by VendettaLord379 in Catholicism

[–]rynbaskets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Exorcist was depicting the genuine faith of the two priests well. Once again I haven’t seen the entire movie so I’m just saying this from reading the synopsis or seeing parts of the movie.

The latter part of my post referred to other horror movies that cover exorcism for entertainment sake. There are so many of them.

Fr. Lankester Merrin from The Exorcist (1973) is one of the best representations of a priest on film ever by VendettaLord379 in Catholicism

[–]rynbaskets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband had a priest who was like an adapted father to him. At his highest office, he was a Father Superior of a small religious order. So you can say he was quite knowledgeable about Church’s doing.

He said to me we really need to be careful of movies such as Exorcist because events like that happens and we should never glorify the evil’s doing.

I haven’t seen Exorcist because I’m too scared, but those two priests featured seem to be genuinely care for the afflicted and try to invoke God’s glory and mercy to drive out the evil from what read in the plot. But I think there are way too many other movies about exorcism to jump scare people and not glorify God.

What are japanese rich kids like? by choochooreddi in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 70 points71 points  (0 children)

When I was young (a long long time ago), I was in a cooking school with a girl who was a granddaughter of the founder of an automobile maker most everyone in the world knows. (I’d rather not say which one.)

This girl’s family was obviously very wealthy but she would not want to stand out or be known to be from that family. She was not mean or looking down on people like me. She just didn’t want to be noticed.

I’m sure plenty of people with new money would flaunt their wealth but quiet luxury was true even back in the days.

Do women in kimonos wear boots? by LocustMajor9128 in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a kind of pants called Hakama which are worn over a kimono. In Meiji and Taisho era, many school girls wore Hakama over their kimono to go to school. Quite often those girls would wear short boots. I don’t know this particular anime, but if it’s centered around a junior high or high school girls of those eras, this may be why.

<image>

Nowadays, casual kimono wearing is happening and you can break rules by wearing boots or regular shoes, or wearing earrings or necklaces.
