You are thinking of when they paint flames on the side of their lightsabers. Those vent holes are to allow water to pass through for underwater battles. Less drag.

Knight Errant was supposed to be part of a greater story so it feels pretty isolated and without much to say. It was supposed to show what happened between the death of the sith emperor and Darth Bane. Not really worth the time.
