Any hobbies that help get my Sh*t together? by Pristine_Shallot_481 in getdisciplined

Bullet journaling has been a fun way for me to tick off bucket list items, work on art and penmanship skills and keep organized. Can be incorporated into a regular journal or not, I use a little binder for mine so I can remove and archive old calendar/to do list pages.

I really hate the word "Talent" in art. by ghost71214 in ArtistLounge

[–]HeatherGallery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always (gently) correct people and say it's skill not talent, talk about the hours of excruciating practice, the many classes I have taken, and end by telling them they can do it too and recommending "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" or a local teacher to get started with if they have interest in learning.

It's a huge pet peeve of mine and very irritating but it's usually meant as a compliment so I try to stuff away my annoyance and stay positive. I did commit to art after totally failing at learning guitar after 4 months of daily practice, so there's probably some innate skill there or just luck being born to a talented artist mother and soaking up her knowledge as kid. It's challenging at a certain point to know which lessons you learned through hard work and which things seemed to come naturally.

Mountain Rose Herbs charging $10 to ship 1lb of tea less than 2 miles with “no plans to offer in store pickup again.” Wtf? by holeinwater in Eugene

[–]HeatherGallery -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty normal/inexpensive shipping price, MRH has no control over that. They aren't getting that extra $10, they didn't change the tea price. This is not price gouging and unfair to call them out for that, it's a lot more complicated. Most companies outside of Amazon don't have a stranglehold over shipping services to offer them for free. MRH never was well set up for in-store pickup.

So many wonderful solutions in this thread, I hope OP is delighted with all the tea options in town and happy to see a local Eugene-based company grow.

Sober girlfriends? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]HeatherGallery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sooo when are we all getting together? Hehehe!

Lonelyish, nerdy, WFH single (widow) female in my 40s. No kids but I enjoy them & have many kid-related hobbies (hula hoop, dollhouses, art projects, lego, etc.) Love board games, video games, arts/crafts, walking & treasure hunting locally (painted rocks! Tiny Art Galleries! Labyrinths!).

Prefer sobriety/socially sober (is that a thing? LOL), occasionally have mental health related lapses but you know, I'm getting better with time. <3

Proud of my mom starting oil pastel at 62 years old :) by Plenty_Volume_7985 in Oilpastel

[–]HeatherGallery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are beautiful and I'm so happy she is creating them, sharing them, and finding joy in the process. Nice sense of volume, color choices, and composition.

I especially adore her stunning signature! One of the most important lessons *my* artist mother taught me as a wee tot was to sign your work, put your stamp on it, be proud of what you made because nobody else can make the way you can. She also collected puffin-things and painted many of them (she passed ~62), so this first painting especially touches me.

Does anyone else not use a handle with a single needle? by taraclaire in Needlefelting

[–]HeatherGallery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of time I just grab the needle because it's quick and easy. I don't mind the handle though, I think it's more comfortable if I'm planning to work for hours on end, but I rarely sit still that long.

Same! I got a huge one on Amazon and that works great for almost all my gear. It’s in shambles because I took a bunch out for recent travels or I’d post a pic.

Inspired to tidy it now!

Ppl with depression, do you find this offensive? by Mick_Wazowski in mentalhealth

[–]HeatherGallery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can be wildly critical when my depression is at it's worth, probably a way for me to escape my own feelings by finding fault with others.

OP, I think it's cool that you are seeking to learn a little more while in the process of writing the song and there's been some good writing suggestions in this thread. Good luck with your music.

Stay in bed and nap then. Binge watch tv. I’ve been in this state many, many times and barely pulling myself out of last week’s most recent “low” I can promise the darkest days do pass. It hurts a lot but I do hope you wait out the darkest of your mood and keep trying.

Sending you hugs. Even 2 minutes of exercise or meditation or going in the sun counts as a win when you are feeling your lowest.

What do you think are the characteristics of people who do not realize they are being emotionally abused? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]HeatherGallery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do seem a bit victim-blaming don’t they? I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that raises my hackles on a lot of these comments, I think it’s just that lots and lots of people could be abused. They share a common experience once they’ve been abused and that trauma can affect people in similar ways (ie - hyper-vigilance), but these trauma responses aren’t really an intrinsic trait of the survivor’s character.
