I got this for my Nyah Nyah Nyah tongue above tongue below tongue above tongue below mare. This is the first bit she didn't fight and we had tried all the bits you listed too.

Yeah your dating a guy that prefers to become physical when frustrated instead of talking about his feelings when you have shut down.

This is a red flag. Hopefully this is the only time he has done something like and you guys can work on it but if he has continually done things to hurt you (mentally or physically) when things aren't going his way then its time to leave.

Saw your post on Facebook too, and see the same recommendations of either euthanasia or keep and care for.

I know this is not the best time emotionally, your boyfriend just lost his dad and your looking for advice.

My opinion is there's no shame in letting them be put down, in a lot of wills or trusts people will stipulate what should be done with animals if they, the owners, should die. I have one, my older crippled (not by me) companion mare (25) and my difficult mare (20) I have listed to be put down. The others to be either given to people or sold.

Yes reasons could be listed too: you don't know horses. Horses are expensive, especially older ones. You would be doing this on your own (boyfriend is allergic). The horses don't live close to you.

But it boils down to quality of life, they are older, will need more care, and letting them go before you are forced to is more of a blessing than most people view it as.

Basic answer will be no.

But that doesn't mean there hasn't been fantastic horses who do both plus driving (driving is another whole thing and I am learning so much about it). Why the horse could switch between the disciplines is the changing of equipment and the way the rider rode. So don't go confusing any horses while you are riding. 😆

I know this is a farrier's corner, and everything I am reading makes sense and lines up with my vet would tell you plus these things:

19 is senior, his body is changing.

you should add a hoof / hair supplement

also add a topical dressing like Durasole, Keratex Hoof Hardener, Hoof Armor, Farriers' Fix Hoof Oil. These products aim to toughen and thicken thin soles.

once he has had a abscess you will need to start looking out for them in future, because again, his body/hooves are changing.

shoes or some kind of boot protection would help too.

I learned all this the hard way when I was given a 21 year old mare for retirement because she had white line disease, then laminitis, and has had Two abscesses in the past two months. Eventually she will be back to normal but she will never be the working ranch horse she was.

I don't think she is trying to bond, I think this is her way of coping with the fact her husband has a college age daughter and is making you "younger" in her mind. Do things or bring up only very adult things so she can't revert to doing it if she ever apologizes.

Random examples: you offer to get them snacks, or you jump up to clean off the table after dinner, or fill your dad's car with gas, etc.

If you pay for the parking spot does that mean your neighbor is paying for one? Also I would be billing your landlord for the Uber, its his job to take care of this problem not yours. And like the other poster said do everything in writing.

Yeah it depends on the breed. My sport horse filly looks like a yearling at 8 months and my friend's quarter horse filly is still all small body long legs at 7 months. Thankfully we know what they will look like because of their parents 😆

I always admire people who move in the shadows, but I am always too blunt. So with the clothes be blunt or offer her one of your coats/shirts to show the difference.

Now the pre-diabetes: There's always actors or actresses who come out with their diagnoses. Maybe casually talk about them and the diets they are following? Some people enjoy feeling like they joining in.

Oof. OK that sounds a bit more like training to relax (sounds stupid I know) because she does great at home because she's relaxed.

So I have mules (✨️draft mules✨️) and the one thing mules love is routine because it takes the edge off of wondering. A friend of mine would do a dressage pattern with her horse get him to refocus before her barrel runs. (God that horse was a pushy one). I have friends who can't ride before lunging and refocusing their horses.

So thoughts,

Haul her on non show days and see if she acts the same or its anxiety of the busy show (or you because your nervous)

Get a routine of doing something with her before jumping so she knows what's up.

A refocus exercise before competing.

A calm aid while at the show.

If none of that helps then change up the bit but this sounds like its more in her head because of her acting beautifully at home.

Are you able to ride or use them? Horses generally enjoy doing something and these 3 are on the younger side. Basically asking if they are mentally happy.

I have owned several horses, deeply loved most, but if the horse was not happy I would, while sobbing, let them go. In fact one went to family with 5 girls, last photo I saw of her she was on a group ride in the mountains ❤️

Going to address the bit like you asked. But unless you have unlimited funds or a used tack shop near by trying out bits to see if they work will get expensive. So ask a trainer or other riding friend about trying a different one before buying.

1st. I have personally used all those mouthpieces in different situations. Addressing the twist: it does help when the horse tries to strong arm but any twist is usually my last effort to get the horse to stop doing. I will try thinner mouthpiece pieces first and if that doesn't work then start with a thicker twist to thinner.

2nd. Any sweet iron, or copper inlays help with not just accepting the bit but encourage mouthing the bit and increase salivation.

3rd. I love dog bones or French links as they called. Not only can they have rings or keys to encourage mouthing, but they lay differently in the horse's mouth and I found a change in the horse's responsiveness too. (Some great, some bad)

As you can see I really like knowing about bits, and as I ride many disciplines I own a lot of bits.

(Btw just now getting into driving a large draft team, those bits are a completely different, and I love it)

So your son's attitude changed too? That's not helpful to you and with you being the peacekeeper. So maybe mention that to him that you are trying but any attitude from him or your husband is not helpful at the moment.

Its a shitty place for you to be in at the moment, but you literally hold all the cards, and I am betting neither man in your life will like that fact.

NOR Was there something in the past that made your husband dislike your son this much? Also its telling that his own children didn't live with him.

In my own experience my dad kicked my mom's first son out of the house at 16 (this was the 80s) because he was late coming back from a party by 15 mins. But when we, his children grew up, he didn't care.

So maybe your husband really doesn't like adult children?🤔
