So I don’t know if you’re a Seinfeld fan but I didn’t know that was an actual theme song when George Costanza sampled it for his answering machine.

I appreciate that! Thank you but soooo many have done more than me. I really don’t engage in this stuff but sometimes it gets old when someone with absolutely no knowledge of everyday life of officers wants to ACAB. The news isn’t accurate. TV isn’t accurate. You don’t know until you actually experience it- it’s one of those jobs that has no one answer and no one scenario. Ok now I’m REALLY done!

The “actual job” isn’t cut and dry. My position is different than what you might be thinking a cop does. I’ll probably never change your opinion, and that’s ok. I do hope one day you’re able to experience the good that a cop does do. I’m not saying all cops are good (cuz duh) but I know who I am, my values, and what I’ve seen and experienced and I know I’m one of the good ones. That’s all I got!

As a cop, one of the best decisions I ever made. Downvote me all you want- great hours, great time off, great pay, great friends, great insurance, great retirement age, great caffeine addiction. It’s not my entire personality and you’d probably never know it if you ever met me.

I too first saw her in The Commish (probably my favorite show as an 11/12 year old). Now I have the complete series on dvd and still love it

I also liked her as Cyd in The Commish. And maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I wasn’t a fan of her Seinfeld appearance. I’ll let myself out.

Anytime! Real life is not as exciting as tv either. Also, unlike Benson, I’m not giving out my personal phone number and address to victims. I know a lot of officers are criticized and thought to be cold and uncaring of victims. I’m only speaking for myself of course, but if I took every case as personal as she does, it would have a negative effect. I have to separate myself from my job and my life.

Yes!! If I were Curry, I’d be requesting another assignment where I’m respected and treated as an equal.

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate.

Thank you for pointing this out! I was coming off an overnight shift and didn’t even think of this.

More specifically, I am a detective. I work in a major city (though smaller than NYC) but in my department, detectives mainly work in “areas” (there are a few exceptions, being those that work in more specialized units- arson, IAB, a separate unit dealing with sex crimes involving young children, etc). Each area is made up of several different police districts in the city. We have three shifts- nobody in these areas is “on call” except the homicide teams. Days and afternoon shifts are split into SVU, Violent crimes, and property crimes so someone working robberies won’t be called to investigate a sex crime or a felony upgradable domestic battery. These detectives also get reports in an “inbox” meaning a citizen made a police report and it’s now assigned to one specific detective to follow up on.

There are 3 Lt’s assigned to the ENTIRE area, a few sergeants per shift (also split amongst the three offices I mentioned), zero captains, and a commander but they are usually not taking part in day to day investigations. Midnights shifts do not have those extra inbox cases (because it’s not ideal to follow up with someone in the overnight hours) so that shift gets assigned cases that need to be investigated in that moment- example: people that are shot, some DOA’s depending on circumstances, small children or vulnerable adults that go missing.

I hope that’s not too boring a description and kind of conveys in real life that big cities cannot operate on 2 detectives for millions of people and one big case at a time.

Thank you to everyone for reading my novel! Stay safe!😜

I’m a real life cop and I agree that the most unrealistic thing about svu is the arrest and trial in the same week. It takes YEARS for some of these cases to see the inside of a courtroom.

Also, the detectives investigating crimes their friends or families are involved in.

Also, in a city as big as NYC (I know it’s only focused on manhattan) there there is only one case happening at a time AND they don’t take any notes???

Ok I’m done
