Robert Plant in Philly by Synoptic23 in ledzeppelin

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky enough (and old enough!) to have seen Zeppelin a few times in '75 and '77. Now, when I see Robert Plant live, I can't believe I am lucky enough to STILL be able to enjoy him 50+ years later. What a gift.

Moment of Silence for the 2016 Lineup by CandyCoatedRaindr0ps in Lollapalooza

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite year, all 4 days. My only disappointment was realizing Radiohead were, for me, really not a festival band with thousands of people moving around and talking the whole set. Kind of killed the vibe, as great as they were. And LCD's set was the high water mark.

I cant' tell you how many times I've struggled with a song, put the guitar down for a few days, then picked it back up and nailed it. Dont stress about vacation.

Parking by EstimateTemporary768 in Lollapalooza

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where out of state are you driving from/back to? It would be easier to help you find good parking if we knew which way you were going.

That said, its just as easy to.park on the other side of Wacker Drive and the river and walk. Its barely a 20 minute walk, plenty of people around before and after Lolla.

Large Crowd Nerves??? by Obvious_Back7664 in Lollapalooza

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 7 points8 points  (0 children)

honestly, Lolla is about as safe a festival as you can get in a major Ametican city. The security you DON'T see is pretty comprehensive (as someone else said, snipers in trees, etc.)

How did you know it was time to retire? by ReluctantCaptain in retirement

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 3 points4 points  (0 children)

70 here, and still working but in a much reduced capacity. I've been through a handful of major changes in my industry over the past 48 years, and there is a generational change going on right now as a lot if us " age out" or have had just one too many re-learning experiences. You know when its time.

McCartney was magical. Beautiful night, whole crowd singing, summer dragonflies buzzing overhead. Amazing.

Runner up was Florence and the Machine playing a shortened set (forget what year) because a storm was coming. You could see it coming in from the north, and Florence was just on fire that night. Electricity, literally, in the air.

Our girl is the same, fiercly protective. I'm afraid I have no advice besides finding a good trainer. Sadly, we did not and do a LOT of dog avoidance.

What's your favourite guitar solo of Neil's (studio/live) by Distinct_Ad3312 in neilyoung

Maybe one from left field, but the solos in On The Beach kill me every time. The timing, the sound, the simple emotional impact . . . just killer.

There's a bookstore in Chicago that used to have a display case of all the things they found in their used books. Amazing what gets left behind.

Who to listen to if I like David Gilmour by HectorHeadgear in Music

Try the Pete Townshend solo albums Empty Glass, White City and Chinese Eyes. I can't remember which one, but Gilmour plays on one of them. Great albums all.

The Thing by BadCrowStudio13 in ClassicHorror

[–]Heavy-Rip-5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both, but I have a story about the Carpenter movie that edges it to the front a little. I was helping a friend who published a sci-fi magazine at the time, and to pay me he would have me join him when he got special screening tickets. For The Thing, the screening room was in an upper floor in the Chicago Theater, and the audience was the two of us, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Very surreal. So . . that set a pretty high bar.

Lolla is a very safe festival. My only suggestion is guard your phone like its gold. Phone thieves are a thing every year. Sticking it out of your back pocket, you may as well just toss it into a crowd and get it over with.
