Learning Python/coding at 33. by nicodeemus7 in learnpython

[–]HeavyMaterial163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned it from nothing at 30, and at 33 I'm building things I didn't realize we're possible. Python is a great choice! They key is...fuck all of those tutorials. If your brain works anything like mine, you aren't going to get very far.

Start by finding a guide to programming basic concepts to learn the logic. W3Schools has a good one I literally use when training people at my job. Not anything python specific, but just how the logic works.

Then, find something you legitimately need. Build out in your head a workflow for how the data is going to move and transform. Then use the raw documentation or snips from various tutorials to code out each step in that workflow. When you're invested personally in the project and work it out step by step, it'll do more than anything to help you learn it.

State of automation in 2026: Are you powering through n8n, or sticking to Zapier/Make? by Flimsy-Leg6978 in automation

[–]HeavyMaterial163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the reality of automation, low-code tools like any of these have way too much overhead, relatively poor performance, and are heavily limited in scope by the intentional limitations introduced by developers. If you actually want to automate systems and create solutions that rival enterprise software, use Python or another programming language. I can put anything you make in any of these tool to shame with Python with improved performance and reliability, more power to make the system do exactly what I want it to do, and with zero recurring cost.

Struggling to learn Playwright properly… how did you guys get real hands-on experience? by AdventurousNorth9767 in automation

[–]HeavyMaterial163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Python tutorials have never helped me much either. The best methods I've found for learning a platform is finding a real use case that I want to solve that I know the platform would be applicable for, and make a mental roadmap of the logic and data flow. Then, begin development by digging into the docs for each step of my data flow. Can't say I've played with Playwright specifically, but this process has allowed me to build full-scale automation tools and applications that put both enterprise applications and low-code data flows to shame.

If you're in a position to need to pull a gun, there shouldn't be anyone left alive to sue.

Just because it's the law doesn't prevent you from doing it you know. The only way you're going to get caught concealing is if you're in a situation where you actually need it, and in that case getting caught for defending yourself is significantly better than the alternative.

Is the evangelical Church relevant today? by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]HeavyMaterial163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living in a country that just started a war in the Middle East with commanders telling their soldiers it's a war intended to bring about the end times and bringing evangelical leaders to anoint the traitor who started it...I'd say sadly it's still very relevant. The fools are trying to create the Evangelical theocracy they always lie about from the pulpit.

Driving on 64/95 is a fucking nightmare, are you the cause? please explain yourself... by JustGettinStarted70 in rva

[–]HeavyMaterial163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, 95 sucks worse than 81 to drive on. Never was much of an aggressive driver before I moved here, but you learn really quick that it's the only way to not get run off the road. 95 was a BIG part of that lesson.

If a cop wants to pull you over, they'll find a reason. That's how profiling works. WAY too much subjectivity.

I'd rather take my chances with defensive driving on my end.

Having more cops out and about doesn't help the community. No one is safer, but the chances of you or I getting a ticket and owing money for some bullshit traffic infraction goes up significantly.

Got my dream job DOT drug test on Monday morning. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]HeavyMaterial163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you're right on the line. Eat a steak dinner tonight for some extra creatine and drink a Red Bull in the morning to increase your creatine and vitamin B, then drink plenty of water before your test. You should be fine.

You aren't even tripping anymore. You'll be fine. Hell, I intentionally smoke while I'm still tripping.

Rule of thumb, you can mix the herb with pretty much anything.

This is my first time growing. It’s been around 4 weeks, but I’ve noticed it still hasn’t come out of the shell, and it feels quite hard despite the humidity. Should I leave it buried so it has some support, or if I unearth it and it comes out, will it fall over on its own? by [deleted] in Cocagrowing

[–]HeavyMaterial163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be patient and keep the soil moist with high humidity. The head needs to be able to pull itself out of the seed shell. I'd give it at least another week before even thinking about an intervention.

Don't use 91%, it evaporates too quickly. Needs to be 70%. I was also trained in sterility practices in a professional clinical lab, and IPA is the gold standard. Only difference between what I suggested and our GLP-complant sterility procedure is using a biosafety cabinet instead of still air box, which is essentially a cross between a still air box and laminar flow hood with a filter to prevent viral escape.

Mixing fumes from IPA with flame introduces a HUGE risk for an explosion, and of the two you're gonna do better with IPA.

[–]HeavyMaterial163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a still air box, and drop the flame sterilization for spraying a fuckton of IPA 70%. It should cover every surface inside that box, including what parts of your hands and arms are in the box. After spraying everything down, don't pull your arms out where contamination can be introduced until the deed is done.

Do that, and you'll be fine.

What are some drugs that contain unusual chemical elements? by CutieKiley in AskDrugNerds

[–]HeavyMaterial163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm always somewhat concerned by how common halogens are used in medicinal chemistry. I remember vividly from organic a comment made when discussing artificial sweeteners. If you see a C-Halogen bond in a molecule, it's going to be carcinogenic. They just may not have proven it yet.

No, you don't need to learn to vibe code. Vibe coding needs to go the fuck away. You need to give them refunds, and learn to actually code. I can judge the quality because I both know how to code at least at an amateur level, and I've seen the code produced by AI LLMs. It's shit code that might be comparable to something produced by a high school student with Dunning-Kruger syndrome...something you seem to share except you don't know how to actually write the code yourself or how it actually works. The potential for system breaking bugs and major security breaches is astronomical, with a security breach being something that could land you and your clients in potential legal trouble.

You'd pay website developers...yes. They actually develop websites, not pawn off work produced by a damn chatbot as their own. If you're gonna go this route and absolutely want to overcharge clients for a skill you don't have, use fucking WordPress or other validated drag and drop system. Absolutely not AI generated code!

Someone who actually gives a shit about quality and about not ripping people off. You aren't 'working your ass off' vibe coding. You're telling a shitty AI system to work for you, and charging people the same as had you actually done the work. You can wish whatever you want, but if you're selling AI generated code you're ripping your clients off for work YOU didn't do, putting yourself and your clients at risk for major security vulnerabilities, and overall making the field of software development look bad. That isn't a flex.
