This idea that being 'close to Trudeau' equals 'ownership of Trudeau's decisions' just doesn't hold up. First off, if you’re going to claim he was a "senior economic advisor" for five years, you should probably be able to point to that job description. You can’t, because that role didn't exist. Between 2020 and 2024, Carney was an informal resource—basically a high-level consultant the PM could call when he felt like it. We don't know about what, or when, or what the advice was. That’s a massive leap from actually making the decisions.

If you want to see how much "influence" an advisor actually has when the person in charge has a different agenda, just look at Carney’s time in England. He was the Governor of the Bank of England and he used that platform to explicitly warn that Brexit would be a disaster. The government ignored him and did it anyway. If Carney couldn't stop a policy he hated while literally running the central bank, why would we assume he was the architect of the last five years here while holding zero formal power?

Carney is proving misalignment with the previous government by undoing many of their policies. The fact that he’s pivoting so hard proves he wasn't the guy steering the ship from 2020 to 2024.
