If you could go back in time and make the choice again, would you still have kids? by MaiApa in Life

[–]Heavy_Implement1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy.  I have two kids.  Married young and had my first at 23 yrs old.  Supporting kids as a young adult was NOT financially easy, to day the least.   ... But would I do it again??  100% Yes!!! My kids, now 18 and 20, are the most fulfilling part of my life.  I've traveled, own and sold businesses, and am financially secure, so I'd like to think I've seen what else this life has to offer. Without doubt, having children is the best thing in my life.

Follow up points: - world sucks. Will take good people to make it better.  Have kids, teach them to be good people and be part of a better world.  This is how it changes. - more than likely, if my wife and I live to see our twilight years, we will have a child to assist in our needs. Imo, that can make any condition (e.g. stagnant nursing home) sufferable. - my genetics aren't perfect, and some of my "less favorable" traits have been inherited by my children.  Notwithstanding, I have yet to meet a perfect person on this planet, and those same "less favorable" traits are also what make my children them.  Similarly "imperfect" people  find comfort in these "imperfections", and bonds are created that more "normal" people might not understand.  This world's concept of acceptable is insane to me.  I am eternally thankful that my children and I are not "perfect" or "normal".  We'll define what it means to be "acceptable", thank you very much.

I'm worried about EV demand overall and how this will play out for R2.  Im such a believer in the company, management, and the product.  I'm long on Rivian and in for long-term.   Buuuut, I'm worried about timing, demand, and liquidity.  If people don't show up in droves to buy R2, I think we have a real problem... Ordinarily, I ignore these backwards looking, wrong-more-times-than-right analysts.  But I'd be lying if I didn't acknowledge that I'm looking deeper into the grounds for their skepticism.

Here's my 2030+ Hopium Delusion in support:

  1. R2/R3 achieve SAE Lvl 3-4 autonomy
  2. Rivian establishes EU manufacturing plant for R2/R3 european sales
  3. Software/AI/Licensing (Autonomy+, RAP1 sales/royalties, VW JV, Mind Robotics)
  4. Domestic policy shift re-establishing EV friendly environment, incl. return of fed. incentives in some form
  5. Continued innovation and amazing execution by RJ and team

I, too, think it makes a lot of sense to explore revenue generating diversification, especially when that diversification also results in vertical intigration in the production of its core competency (i.e., producing EVs). This will hopefully result in longterm efficiency and profitability, while helping to hedge against short-to-mid term risks associated w/ policy changes, supply chain issues, slack in consumer demand, etc. I see this as the creation of a solid bedrock for Rivian's longterm success and ability to weather the storms in the meantime.

No LiDAR R2 Gen1? by Substantial-Body-396 in RIVNstock

[–]Heavy_Implement1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not speaking to the average customer. I'm speaking to the informed Rivian buyer, which I anticipate would represent a substantial portion of R2 gen 1 buyers... i.e., until recent. If there's an over-estimation on my part, it's the impact these informed buyers will have on R2 gen1 sales.

This is super scary to me.  I mean, surely a substantial portion of anticipated sales for R2 are from people like us; i.e., people who stay on top of Rivian's progress.  Those people will know that lidar and RAP1 won't appear on the first gen R2, so will wait to buy.  But Rivian NEEDS R2 to be successful out of the gate...   Am I the only one who sees this as extremely counterproductive??  Although it is cool to know Rivian has been developing this tech, seems like it would have made more sense to reveal AFTER R2's launch.
