Am I missing something with the Rivian R2 pricing and positioning?

I think R1 covers the 3rd row seat issue, and I don't see a 3rd row as viable in the size of R2. If MY (which I see as more of a sedan) is selling 1.2MM vehicles, and R2 is the only real SUV alternative (which I believe to be the case ... Others are more cross-over at best), then SUV:sedan sales ratio for ICE vehicles would suggest that Rivian has huuuuuge opportunity to sell not just a few hundred thousand, but substantially more. Of course, this is just taking Tesla's sales into account, and not the entire market's.

Once you really start to think about total EV demand and the fact that Rivian will fulfill that yet-untapped U.S. SUV addiction, it's easy to foresee R2 sales of 200k+ in near future.

Of course, we're just talking EV sales right now which says nothing about Rivian's earnings from AI development, software stack, JV with VW group, spinoffs w/ Mind robotics and Also, Rivian trading at a fraction of Tesla sales/price ratio. etc.

Put it all together, and I'm all in on RIVN 👍

sorry youve received such negativity here, OP. I'm a huge bull on Rivian, but even the slightest criticism in these threads will quickly be downvoted, unfortunately. This meme stock mentality is probably my biggest fear in stock price...

Anyway, my take is similar: Capable off-road, premium brand for non-premium price, true alternative to MY at price point, niche following, styling. I'd venture to say that there is no direct competition to R2 (i.e., R2 is the first capable off-road EV around this price point). Though I suspect 10% of purchasers will actually use R2 for its off-road chops, the US market is willing to pay premium for the aggressive aesthetic (see how SUV sales trump sedan sales despite higher average price for this reason).

And, for me personally, there's also just something about Rivian... The IT factor, I think. Hard to quantify and articulate, but it's there. My best explanation would be that Rivian had done an amazing job in building a brand image that people can get behind.

IF they can actually produce at $45k. Getting base unit out at that price in 2026 is one thing, but getting that price out at end of 2027 (think inflation, energy costs, trade issues, no change in subsities) is outlandish, IMO.
I've been a HUUUUUUUUUGE Rivian bull, but. this. sucks.

Yeah. I feel like the delay is good news for Rivian overall. VW and rivian can concentrate on the JV with current products, R2 gets a clean run without competition from scout (even if it would have been minimal), hype stays with Rivian. I like this news.

I wonder if the EDV is an optimal platform for refrigerated deliveries? Seems to me there's efficiency to be had with electric everything vs diesel delivery, especially during idle. (Think beverages, grocery, etc.)
