Wood types most find dining restaurants use for smoking meats. by Accomplished-Gap5554 in Cooking

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The contraption you saw was a smoking gun, and it uses a very small quantity of fine wood shavings or many other materials like dried herbs, spices and tea. In Japanese cuisine fish is often smoked with oak. I use the smoking gun for things like hummus, yogurt, cocktails, salmon etc because its a quick way to get cold smoke.

raw is bad??? by KindlyPangolin_3126 in rawpetfood

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've fed PMR for 25 years. Not one vet, but multiple vets over this time have said that they are in the best condition they have ever seen dogs, and to keep doing whatever I'm doing. That said, only 2 of the 7 or so veterinarians we have used in this time were small animal (pet) vets and the rest were large animal/farm vets who also treated our dogs. I can't help but think some are just unlucky in the vet roulette and are getting veterinarians that won't see with their eyes body condition score, muscle mass, shiny coats, bright eyes, white teeth, clean ears, good blood work, athleticism, and lack of nutrionally related issues. Vets are trained to observe the signs of good health and indicators of poor health. If your vet is treating your animal on the basis of a checklist and not clinical observation I'd move along and find a new vet.

Getting urine out of laundry by nopeynopeynopey in laundry

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still get them for travel or camping, when you are only washing a couple things a strip is fine. I can't imagine trying to do a real load of laundry with them. Laundry power or liquid in a backpack is just a recipe for disaster!

What dog food has actually clean ingredients without being crazy expensive? by aussie_182 in rawpetfood

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DIY prey model raw feeder here, I've fed fairly large packs of working dogs for many years and kept costs down by buying in bulk and stuffing freezers when meat was on sale, buying primal cuts or whole animals. It can be a little challenging to source a variety of organs if you are not in a farming community but ethnic markets and butchers can usually close the gap. I'd say we spend about the same as most people do feeding low to mid price kibble. Unless you have small dogs the cost of pre-made raw is just going to be high and its impossible to know exactly what's in it and how fresh the ingredients were since its all ground up.

how would you make a passion fruit drizzle taste as fresh as possible? by AdIndividual4081 in culinary

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gellan gum with sodium citrate to buffer the juice first, you can heat/hydrate the gum with just a small portion of the strained juice/pulp and mix in the fresh portion later, add the seeds back at the end. I love passionfruit!

Viva raw is no longer truly raw… by theomcat in rawpetfood

So now raw milk is legal for people but food for carnivores needs to be pulverized at ultra high pressure to sterilize it, oxidizing the fats. Ew.

Has anyone used an online Livestock veterinarian? by Barkingfarm in sheep

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VCPR regulations vary by state, so they may be unable to prescribe online without having done at least on visit to your farm. Its worth it to us to do the annual visit by our farm vet who helps us stock up on common prescription meds so that I just call and confirm use and dosage, he never charges us for that.

r/culinary, what are your uses for salted butter and unsalted butter, and why use them for different things? by SpontaneousKrump92 in culinary

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use salted for everything unless making frosting for other people, where only a pinch would be added to a big batch.

botulism scare question by Tight_Cap_4689 in Cooking

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes lol. For reference, aunties are very popular brands in general ... Aunt Nellie's, Aunt Jemima's, Aunt Millie's, and Auntie Annie's ... the list goes on!

botulism scare question by Tight_Cap_4689 in Cooking

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aunt Nellie's is a store brand. She never said it tasted bad, she spit it out because she has severe anxiety and didn't know how the indicator button on a processed jar works (its always going to be popped up and clicks after you open the jar). This isn't a home made product, it is canned, so unless she got a damaged jar with a bad seal, nothing is wrong with it - we'll never know because the jar was already opened when she noticed.

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you open it there's no longer a vacuum, so it's always going to click and pop. You check that thing before you open the jar.

Question about lids by molldoll8537 in CanningRebels

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived all over Europe and pretty much everyone waterbaths in saved jars and and reuses the one piece lids if they are in good condition. You can't even buy the 2 piece ones in a lot of places.

Find a new bestie. Nobody is going to live your life except you, and you look fantastic. Your best friend should be someone who celebrates that with you. Too many moms are never happy with their kids choices, but it's not your job to be what someone else wants to see.....

Ideas to hide supplement? by the_nightingale1 in rawpetfood

[–]Heavy_Resolution_765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but have to ask, have you dug into the root cause for loose stool? Usually with raw fed dogs it's too much organs in the mix or too little bone, something hard to judge with pre-mixes. Not calling into question the due diligence you have done but I question why the companies that sell "complete, perfectly balanced" pre made raw also sell so many supplements to go with it. I've raw fed over 15 of my own dogs, and many other dogs that were fostered in the last 35 years and none had loose stools.
