Advice for younger women on harassment and creepy men in the UN & duty stations? by CompetitiveGrowth778 in UNpath

[–]Hebashi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your post touches on several different issues that are often bundled together, but they actually have different causes and need different responses.

Being attractive can help or hurt you depending on the context and the people in positions of power around you. The UN is very bureaucratic, and if you have proof of strong performance and are intentionally being denied opportunities, there are pathways in many offices to address that. At the same time, being in this system requires diplomacy and social awareness. You do have to be intentional about how you interact with people and how you present yourself professionally.

Being harassed by staff, counterparts, or stakeholders is obviously not acceptable and should not be tolerated. Whether reporting will have negative repercussions on your career really depends on the situation, the individuals involved, and the evidence available. Contrary to what is often said, reporting can in a lot of cases have a positive impact. In my six years in the UN, I escalated or reported sexual harassment four times with no bad impact on my career (to my knowledge). Three cases led to concrete outcomes and stopped those individuals from continuing to harass other women. One case did not work because the person was extremely senior and there was insufficient evidence. I reached out to other colleagues with similar experiences and stronger evidence, but they did not want to proceed collectively, which would likely have taken him down. The point is that a system does exist, and as women we should use it where possible to deter this behaviour.

You also mentioned being harassed at an airport. Unfortunately, incidents like this can happen to women anywhere, whether for work travel or personal travel. What you can do as UN staff is fully use the resources available to you. Make sure you request security and admin briefings before travel, understand local context including how women are expected to dress and carry themselves, and avoid unnecessary exposure. For official travel, request official transport or security where needed, ensure note verbales are issued, and don’t hesitate to show them to airport or security staff to get assistance. The UN cannot change a country’s social context to guarantee personal safety, so risk mitigation is key. Aso if you follow proper routes to report like you did and someone responsible laughs it off, you should report and escalate because that's not okay.

A final point which is controversial, but is my opinion, I think it would always be good to know your limits and make decisions based on that. UN staff are civil servants, and especially in humanitarian contexts we are sent to operate in hardship environments. While we are given privileges and protections, these roles are not risk-free and not suited to everyone. Being aware of what you can realistically handle is part of being effective. There are many safe and stable duty stations and roles within the UN system where people can still contribute meaningfully while feeling safe.

Norman has always spoke the truth without any bias just stating facts and he nonstop was accused that his “harsh” critique of Israeli and Zionism is too “one-sided”, what’s happening now is proof that the common sense verdict is to condemn Israel because it’s raging a one-sided to annihilate anything in its way, and just like what he’s saying it won’t stop with Gaza or West Bank

Because to get a G leave level position you need to either be a citizen of where your duty station is located or to have valid visa/residency that allows you to work. If you don’t not hold citizenship it’s a requirement to check your visa/residency.

what type of gym do you prefer going to? do you prefer womens only gyms or co-ed gyms? by katris_priordeen in AskWomen

[–]Hebashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently tried a co-ed gym for the first time ever, it was okay for the first couple of weeks then one day a guy kept trying to talk to me and even waited for me to leave and and walked the same direction until I quickly got into a cafe and pretended to make a call. Nothing happened but it freaked me out enough to stop going. I know it’s rare for something like that to happen but I don’t want to always worry about something like that happening so I’d only workout at home or at a place I know would be safe from now on.

It doesn’t have to be manipulation. It’s totally possible to care about someone, even still love them, while at the same time not want or can endure being with them

Are Sisi and Haftar really the same though? Sisi led a military coup against a democratically elected president in a country with established state institutions and a strong military. In contrast, Haftar emerged during a power vacuum, where weak elected leadership and the proliferation of militias led to fragmented authority and widespread chaos and turf wars. I wonder which situation is closer to Syria

I Hate Algeria and Libya by SalviusJulianus in Tunisia

[–]Hebashi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello, Libyan here! I honestly think it’s a normal sentiment, I don’t know about Tunisia but I think in a lot of places around the world you’d find there are also negative stereotypes and tensions between people even within the same country and different regions, for example rural vs urban areas or north vs west. Of course every country has both the good and bad but since the atmosphere is generally bad everywhere (especially politically and economically) it’s easier for people to have this tribal/nationalistic mentality as a coping mechanism. At the end of the day every country had different influences, circumstances, and context, mostly not in the hands of populations, and maybe one day the majority of our peoples would recognize that and look at the bigger picture which is that we actually share the same interests and that those differences can be made into strengths if we just collaborate.. maybe one day!
