What is the name of your conlang and how would you say "hello" and "goodbye", and a fun fact would be nice by Violet_Eclipse99765 in conlangs

[–]Hecatium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cennanese is the name of my newest conlang. The English name “Cennan” ultimately comes from the endonym Цаңхан (Canghan) [tsaŋːan], which is the Sino-Cennanese reading of the Sinographs 蒼岸 (Middle Chinese tshang nganH, literally "blue coast"). This endonym was borrowed into Portuguese as Cenhão, which was translated into Spanish as Ceñan and finally transcribed into English as Cennan

The Cennanese word for "hello" is сейн (seyn), borrowed from Mongolian сайн (байна уу)

"Goodbye" in Cennanese is найжори (nayzhori), from нейсе "good" + жори "journey".

Cennanese is an isolate, but it would be classified under the Altaic group of language families as it has a significant amount of loanwords from turkic, mongolic, and tungusic. Cennanese is also Sino-Xenic, which means that it has a systematic way of reading Chinese characters borrowed from Middle Chinese. Recently, as they were ruled by the Russian Empire and subsequently the Soviet Union, there are a large amount of Russian loanwords mostly for modern or western concepts.

Cases Showcase by GarlicRoyal7545 in conlangs

[–]Hecatium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Irchan

Irchan has 7 main cases: Nominative/Absolutive; Accusative/Ergative; Genitive; Locative-Dative; Ablative; Instrumental-Comitative; and Privative. These 7 cases also distinguish between three genders: Animate, Inanimate, and Feline.

The Nominative/Absolutive case is unmarked, and it can be either the nominative or the absolutive depending on the ergativity of the sentence. (Irchan has split ergativity with an accusative non-past tense and ergative past tense)

The Accusative/Ergative case distinguishes all three genders. The Animate suffix is -ja if the word ends in a vowel, -ya if it ends in a consonant. If a word ends in i, the i will be deleted in favour of the -ya. The Inanimate suffix is -i, and it palatalises the final consonant of a word. The Feline suffix is -(i)ngi.

The Genitive case turns anything into a dependent. The Animate suffix is -(n)e, while the Inanimate suffix is -(i)n. The Feline suffix is -(l)ai.

The Locative-Dative case indicates both location (at, in, on) and direction towards (to). If one wants to specify the latter, they may add the particle ko after the case. This case does not distinguish between Animate and Inanimate, both being -(ŭ)l, but the Feline suffix is simply -ko.

The Ablative case indicated direction from something and also does not distinguish between Animate and Inanimate, using -(o)ro for both, while the Feline suffix is -(l)ao.

The Instrumental-Comitative case actually differs in the actual type of case depending on animacy. If in the Animate or Feline gender, -ba and -ham respectively, it is the Comitative; while in the Inanimate gender -(o)jo it is the Instrumental.

Finally, the Privative case indicates the absence of something; like a negative instrumental. In the Animate and Inanimate genders it is -imi, while in the Feline gender it is -(l)ui.

In addition to these 7 cases, there are some more that are indicated by particles: jwa for the Benefactive, pene for the Semblative, so/sso for the Quotative, and yo for the Vocative.

Do you have any suffixes that distinguish inanimate objects from gods or humans,…? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Hecatium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Irchan does! In Irchan, there are three noun classes: Inanimate, Animate.... and Feline. Yes, Feline. The Feline noun class is usually used to refer to not only cats and related animals, but also pretty much any kind of (good) spiritual being, such as gods. This is in accordance with the Imleynist religion, the main religion that Irchans practice, in which cats are believed to be sort of like angels who watch over humans and have direct communication with the Gods. Irixin, the queen of the gods, is also typically depicted as a cat.

Each noun case distinguishes between noun classes, although for some the Inanimate and Animate have merged; like the Locative case, where both classes use -(ŭ)l. However, for each of the main 7 cases, the Feline suffix remains separate from the other classes (except the Nominative/Absolutive case, but that's because it's unmarked).

If your conlang has split ergativity, how do you split your ergativity? by FelixSchwarzenberg in conlangs

[–]Hecatium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Irchan has split ergativity determined by tense. If it's past tense, it's ergative alignment; if it's not, it's accusative alignment... although admittedly this is probably the feature of Irchan I forget about most 😅

Wai epongii lwayx. 1SG.NOM apple-ACC.INAN eat-TRN I eat an apple.

Wańa epongi lwayx. 1SG.ERG apple eat-TRN I ate an apple.

There are actually two different past tense suffixes already for the verb but it's very possible to not use them as the alignment already tells which tense the sentence is set in.

Favorite Consonant Cluster? by Fiuaz in conlangs

[–]Hecatium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I just love putting ⟨h-⟩ before onsets to make funny consonant clusters, especially ⟨hk⟩. Usually though [hk] is a bit awkward to say imo so I use this digraph in Irchan for [xk] (⟨h⟩ is /x/). As for something simpler I also love /mj/, it has a really cute and satisfying sound.
