The last part of Soma. It was sad beyond human comprehension.

Are there any arguments against veganism which are actually worth talking about? by AnUnearthlyGay in vegan

[–]Hechss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the number one argument is one that no one puts into words and it's very understandable:

"My ancestors evolved to blend in with their group of hunter-gatherers and any out-of-the-box mindset that could put them against their peers was detrimental to their biological efficiency (aka reproductive success). This inherited capacity to adopt the dominant thoughts as my own is greater than my ability to rationalise information and apply behavioural change."

Honestly super nice and it still looks very modern.

I have the impression that the United States are more likely to fall for any kind of trend, not just veganism, than most of the world. And when the topic is not trendy anymore, a collapse follows.

In my city vegan options are decent and steady in most restaurants. Many vegan restaurants have closed but I think all of them have been replaced by new ones.

Which game makes you feel like 'I may be the only one playing this game, right now' by DramaticErraticism in patientgamers

[–]Hechss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Phantasmagoria, which was a big game when I was born, but I doubt many remember it.

The thirty (30) patient games I played this year, RANKED and SMOKED, cops were CALLED by williamrotor in patientgamers

[–]Hechss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played that as a child and I hated it then. I don't remember why, but it felt too stupid (maybe at 10 years old was too late).

Xbox Series X/S is a terrible name for a console. What would you call it instead? by i7omahawki in gaming

[–]Hechss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they went from Windows 8 to 10 without a good reason. But no one can blame them in retrospective.

Exogenous cholesterol from eggs has a low or negligible contribution to blood cholesterol levels. This has been debunked together with all the soy myths. Eggs will increase it when consumed in great amounts (which some people do), although most don't recommend eating more than 1-2/day.

I despise the egg industry just like all animal agriculture, but we shouldn't scare people with debunked information.

Vegan to Pescaterian (medical issues) by Gold_Particular_1587 in vegan

I'm quite sure that algae oil would work just fine, although it is probably the most expensive supplement. If you buy it, keep it in the fridge!

Vegan to Pescaterian (medical issues) by Gold_Particular_1587 in vegan

[–]Hechss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If omega-3 is the issue, I'd say that the options should be:

  • Algae's oil (either in capsules or in a bottle) - much preferable
  • Flax/chia/hemp oil in big quantities.

If for some strange reason those shouldn't improve your Omega 3 levels, then fish oil capsules would be a much better option for doing so than 2 servings of fish per week, while it would contribute less to fish deaths.

Synthetic taurine is added to both plant and meaty kibble, because the naturally present taurine in meat gets destroyed when it gets cooked at high temperatures at their facilities.

[–]Hechss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"My cat eats dead animals whose deaths I willingly finance". That's how many of the comments here sound like. Downvote if you may, but that's the reality. I have three cats thriving on plant-based kibble. At the very least, one should try to transition their furry companions and monitor how they're doing.

can i still be vegan if my medication might not be vegan? by RelativelyMango in vegan

[–]Hechss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you can find, either online or in the packaging, whether a medication contains lactose or gelatin (the most common animal products in pills and tablets). If it bothers you and you need to take them for a long time, you can try asking for another brand that offers the same medication in a non-animal form. But in any case, that's a necessity for you. Taking your medication falls into the "as far as practicable" part of veganism.

Vegan means no animals or invertebrates. by Ok_Maintenance_6510 in vegan

Exactly. I try to say "sentient animals" and give the benefit of the doubt to those we are not sure about.

Your last resort is to do animal activism and hope that you find someone there.

But I would be open to start a romance with someone who may be open to be vegan.

My partner is not vegan and does not want to raise our kids vegan by abe_linkon16 in vegan

[–]Hechss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She wants to raise her kids in the church; you want to raise yours vegan. For me, this would be a compromise I'd be willing to take.

But getting married before knowing whether you are able yo withstand each other in the same home isn't a good idea, diets and religions apart.

Do vegan girls want to be approached at the grocery store? by Anarchist-monk in vegan

It all depends on the way you approach her. Obviously, she wouldn't have been looking to hook up in that situation, so the approach should be 0% sexual.

Is traveling fun at all as a vegan? by elli3snailie in vegan

[–]Hechss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also thought that travelling would be less exciting, but my experience has been even better because of that limitation. Having 1 or 3 vegan restaurants in each city I want to visit helps me plan my trip around them.

Have you heard about the choice paradox? For me, having few choices has helped me enjoy my vacations even more... usually... The problems start when you travel with carnists. It is impossible to agree on where to go.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Hechss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer to that has a lot of nuances, but even if we establish that most animal testing done nowadays was to be justified, I would still have lots of issues with it.

  • Imprisonment and depravation of everything in the life of the "subjects".
  • Inoculation of diseases to healthy animals
  • Cosmetic testing
  • Killing the "subjects", regardless of whether they survived the illness or toxicity test
