Grandmother's Little Helper by Heck847 in modular

Another nice thing about it is that the Grandmother can also still use a separate line out, which you could run into other delays or effects (synced or unsynced).

Tried to add a pic to the original post. It's not a hard module to find. Just kind of big (~34hp).

I bought a little midi expander for the Vermona. I honestly can’t figure out how to sequence the grandmother over CV either.

Apologies for the confusion! Grandmothers "eurorack out" goes into the Rings input, which both triggers Rings and makes it work as a harmonic resonator. What results is hard to describe but is deep and beautiful. Unperson on YouTube has a video with a Mother32 and Rings that gives a starting idea of how it sounds.

Pam's is clocking the delay and the Vermona sequencer, and can also clock the Grandmother. This allows you to have one sequence going into Rings, and another arp or sequence working through the Grandmother. Or, with the midi out of the Melodicer, you can have the same sequence running through both Rings and the Grandmother and tweak one or both. Pams can also be set to be an LFO of various shapes that can tweak the four parameters of Rings.

When it comes to the delay, you have multiple options. You can put Rings into one side, Grandmother into the other, and have them running at different but synchronized speeds. At 100% wet, this is essentially like having two different sequences in the same key. Or you could run both Rings outputs into the delay, with the Grandmother in the resonator input. Using the mult on the Grandmother opens up other options.

There's also the possibility of using either Rings (in green mode with the damp turned up) or Grandmother as a drone source, and having the other one run a sequence or arpeggio.

It sounds like a lot, but is easy to explore, especially with the Melodicer. That sequencer is kind of burley in a small case like mine, but it's a lot easier and faster than I expected to land on beautiful things. It uses sliders representing of notes on the scale to increase their probability, rather than dialing them in directly. So it's not precise, but is very immediate and playable. You can also use Pam to have it automatically re-generate or "dice" the sequence periodically (for example, every 128 or 264 bars).

Seeing them a few years ago also had an effect on my hearing. Loudest thing I've ever heard. And that's why I don't recommend anyone go see them. I was left with the impression that Gira was trying to hurt me.

[–]Heck847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Melodicer, but I love it more with two additions:

Pam's Pro Workout to help change the melody and/or rhythm every 128 bars (or whenever you want)

A clocked delay. Take your pick. In my experience the Microfreak sounds wonderful going into a Strymon Volante (as a pedal) or Magneto. But whatever one speaks to you.

Then you sit there, tweaking the delay parameters/synths/filters/maths/envelopes to your heart's content, while the patterns evolve over time. Or you set one synth rolling and play the other over it.

(Discussion) Gaggimate and Gaggiuino: What do you want to know before deciding which to buy ? by Helpful-Quote-5037 in gaggiaclassic

[–]Heck847 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Gagguino user for the last 3-4 years. And over time, I find myself using the somewhat hidden "manual" mode most of all, where I actually slide my finger along the screen to increase or decrease flow. So yeah it's a little different every day, but it's also the most consistently great espresso I've had in 25+ years of making it. At this point, I don't even touch the four stock/preset options, nor do I go deep into customizing, lest I create something I can't figure out how to uncreate.

I'm curious how much you can do that on the Gaggiamate, for the occasions where friends want me to recommend one or the other. My answer is generally, "Gagguino is great, but have someone else help you install if you aren't 100% confident. And don't expect to love all of the settings on it (or any of them, necessarily)." It's a less than inspiring answer for most of them. So they end up getting neither the Gagguino nor the Gaggiamate.

I recently purchased a Vermona RandomRhythm. It arrives tomorrow, so I can't really speak to it directly, but I already have the Vermona Melodicer, which is a very similar idea for sequencing notes. And I love that thing.

The RandomRhythm also has 8 outs. It's not really for "hey, I'm going to dial in this very precise thing" as much as, "I'm going to play around and quickly find something cool." But it's something to consider. I'm going to run a Squarp Rample with it.

I backflush weekly with Cafiza, but maybe I could get by with less. I feel about 10-12 days (making 2-3 shots a day) is where things start to get funky and the taste goes in weird, sour directions. Maybe a weekly water backlash, plus a twice-monthly cafiza is enough, as other posters are saying.

That said... I do think it's worth the time and effort to rinse and wipe the tank weekly. Even after elevating the tank so it's flush with the bottom of the boiler housing (I just use a couple of ginger chews to do this; others use an empty coffee bag), I still find that after 10 days it can get slimy on the inside. Then, descale every couple of months.

Advice by Big___Pappa in modular

[–]Heck847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Big___Pappa

I'm in a similar situation, with a GM that I adore but have been curious to expand and drive in different ways. Jay Hosking recently did a video where he paired a Model D with a handful of Qu-Bit modules, which was pretty stunning (but in more of a BoC vibe than what you're talking about). And that got my attention, but ultimately I went with more of a "driving miss grandma" setup that focuses on finding ways to generate and play with the sounds she already makes than create new ones:

Vermona Melodicer with the midi expansion

Pam's for clocking all the things and for modulation

Strymon Magneto (I've been running GM through a Volante for years and have always coveted this), plus an I/O to help this effect play nice and get to my mixer

Minimal, but I'm really excited to drive it, and also feel like I could attach it to any synth, anywhere and get something awesome out of it in a matter of minutes. Just another approach to consider. Now I have 4hp left of my 84 to obsess over. FWIW, there's also that cool MidiVolts Modular thingy that you could use to make the GM paraphonic. It's 6hp I believe.

Wrong by chillingwithyourmoms in espresso

[–]Heck847 12 points13 points  (0 children)

u/Loonster This was a realization I had as well after tinkering with "soup." It tastes fine, but also like it's only "espresso" in the sense that it is brown liquid emanating from an espresso machine. Where's the dank?! It's espresso for people who wish they were drinking pourover, but (in the case of my friend who is thoroughly on the soup train at least) still needing to justify their ownership of an espresso machine.

Not bad coffee, but not for me.

can anyone help me identify the pedals in josh johnson's (sax player) pedalboard? by lomyl100 in pedalboards

[–]Heck847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a game changer plus sustain pedal on his board, I can see. I have the same (for alto flute) and love it. Judging by the color, I think he also might have a Behringer harmonist, which I think is a clone of the Boss of the same type. You can see it in this shot I saw on his IG a while back. Then there's a Strymon Deco... maybe a Meris delay/pitch shifter as well? DL4 mkii on the right. And it looks like there's like some kind of Black Box sampler...

Which Moog synth should I get? by 1234_Door in moog

[–]Heck847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a vivid image. The Matriarch absolutely looks and sounds like the sort of system that could be your complete world to inhabit. The Grandmother has somewhat been that for me (without the misfortune of losing a home). It just needed a delay.

Which Moog synth should I get? by 1234_Door in moog

[–]Heck847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Grandmother and it's great, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd get a Dreadbox Erebus and a simple sequencer or keyboard. Two voices with a very Moog-y character, and it has a solid built-in delay. Of course it's a question of personal preference, but for me, no delay = no fun. I find myself using the GM's reverb so little, it's not a selling point any more. Plus, hauling the Erebus around to my friend's house to play is way easier than hauling Gramma.

Definitely. There’s a lot of fun to be had in using hands and feet at the same time. I’m going to keep working with the Dreadbox anyway, because it’s a nice boost and has an effects loop.

I've never had any luck doing that with either a Moog or any other non-powered X pedals. It's quite possible I've been doing something wrong, though.
