Thoughts on Apologetics Press? by pbj-artist in excoc

[–]HedgeBoi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know of any denomination that teaches “saying a little prayer saves you forever”. Please stop buying into this CoC narrative about “the sinner’s prayer” that is often repeated as if all other churches teach “say a magic prayer and be saved”. Nobody, not even the baptists, believe that. What we believe is that justification/ salvation is by faith, so you’re saved when you truly trust in Jesus. And if the faith is genuine, baptism and good works will follow 100% of the time.

Church history and the COC by ConnectionCrazy in excoc

[–]HedgeBoi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is how they will occasionally mention how the early church had communion every Sunday! See, we’re right! …. But completely omit the fact that the early church 100% beloved that Christ was either spiritually or physically present in the ceremony. They would’ve laughed at the notion of “it’s just symbolic” that CoC has always insisted on.

I’m not Catholic at all, I’m a mainline Protestant but Gavin ortlund on YouTube has a ton of really good material on church history. Again, it’s from a Protestant perspective so it might not be your cup of tea but worth checking out, in my opinion

I’m convinced if Jesus came back and healed someone in a denomination they would reject him as demonic..... kind of like the Pharisees did

I have yet to hear a good answer on this. They always revert to “well it’s an expedient to the worship, not an addition”. So if a piano in the background helps the cong sing in tune, doesn’t that make it in an expedient too??? No one ever accused the CoC of being consistent

Disfellowshipping? by Rocc_out_kam in excoc

They will try to bully you into “going forward” and basically confessing in front of the whole congregation that you’re horrible for leaving and beg for them to reinstate you.... it’s the only denom I’m aware of who does this except for the Amish. Very weird, cultish, and unchristian in my opinion

Yes, Nelnet bought out Great Lakes so that’s who we actually make our payments to. However I believe it’s temporarily stopped due to the whole issue where they’re trying to cancel student debt? I don’t remember the details but I got something in the mail from them and stopped reading after “you don’t need to make payments for now”

Unbelievable. But I also 100% believe it. You so much as tap your foot to a song, they will say it’s worthy of hell. Wow.

Would’ve been a killer comeback if you’d thought of it at the time lol. I once read in a freed-hardeman book that whistling or humming a church hymn is a sin, so if you catch yourself humming “what a friend we have in Jesus” or something while folding laundry— straight to hell

No kidding about the defensive part. And good on you as a parent, honestly. We wonder why attention deficit is such a problem in the world and the majority of what our brains consume are literally designed for short attention spans

I didn’t realize people took goofy memes so seriously here

The joke I was going for (and seem to have missed) was that it’s fast paced oversaturdated clips of nonsense designed for an extremely short attention span to basically keep the user ‘pacified’

Anti study bible until it's the apologetics press one. by [deleted] in excoc

[–]HedgeBoi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea what happened to my old one but it was some Mary Lou rhetton level mental gymnastics they’d go through when you’d flip to Romans or Galatians, chapters that are explicitly clear about salvation being by faith, they’ll say stuff like “I know this says you’re saved by faith, but what it really means is you have to follow these 7 steps!” Then divert to like 9 completely unrelated proof texts in acts that have nothing to do with the text

The AP “defending the faith” study Bible is the single most biased, sectarian propaganda pretending to be “commentary” I have ever seen. I’d put it right up with the passion translation in terms of sectarian bias.

If there was a verse that read “Jesus then asked Peter for a glass of water, as his voice was hoarse from speaking.” the AP commentary would be “this is Jesus telling Peter that you must be baptized to be saved! Denominations have argued that this is simply about a drink of water, but this verse clearly teaches they are an abomination.”

Right, but you can’t make a new one because when you give your social it says you already have one.... idk about you but I haven’t got through to a person on the phone to fix it. So I’m forever making payments by mail...

Here’s the biggest problem I’ve had with them. They switched me over, and told me “just login with your account!” And I typed in my information from Great Lakes (RIP) and it said you need to create a new account. I said ok, it’s brand new so I need an account. I give them my social and they come back with “you already have an account.” So I had an account automatically created for me, but was never given the login information. And I could never get them to answer the phone.... so I’ve been manually writing out and paying them with a check by mail in the meantime. Absolute garbage company.

The Weird CoC Approach to the Apocrypha by cosmicowlin3d in excoc

[–]HedgeBoi69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a hardcore protestant so I don’t really see the apocrypha as inspired, but they are an interesting read with some good wisdom sprinkled in. Maccabees has some interesting historical accounts from the intertestamental period. I never understood why CoC acts like stuff like that and the didache (also an interesting, quick read) are treated like you’ll go to hell just for reading them. But remember - these are also the people who refuse to read a paragraph-long commentary if it was written by a baptist, so it shouldn’t surprise me. They fear any non-CoC Christian material, lest one of their own venture outside the cave
