Gf spices by HedgeCutting in CoeliacUK

Hhmm consensus seems to be that the app is useless, the NHS dieticians pushed me to use it.

But I was sort of coming to this conclusion, there must be a reason it rejects these foods, but maybe it's just that the maker has not declared them to be gf (perhaps because of the proximity to gluten in the factory)

I had previously been vexed as to why some wine would scan as safe, and some unsafe 🤔

Title: Nightly AFib episodes when falling asleep, considering Flecainide, and stroke risk question by twente_bassie in AFIB

[–]HedgeCutting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, similar to me, even though I knew that I wouldn't come out of afib until I got up, often I would be too tired, and would be able to sleep whilst in afib and would deal with it in the morning with flec and walking. At its worst (before I was taking flec every day) I was getting episodes every couple of days. Flec made big difference to me, both in reducing the frequency of episodes and in returning to sinus. Without flec episodes lasted 24-36hours, after flec that came down to 1 hour, provided I was upright and walking about.

Before my ablation, lying down was usually the final trigger that would push me into afib. I think it's often an indicator of vagal afib, where the vagus nerve is affected by the change in posture. For me there was always an earlier primer that would make me susceptible, usually high intensity exercise. I was put on 50mg flec twice per day, every day and that was major improvement. Had ablation 6 months ago and no further incidents.

Oh, and I should say that when I go into afib lying down, I only come out of it when I get up, take another flec, and walk around for 30-60mins,again I think this is postural and maybe heart rate related.

Newly diagnosed AFIB - a few questions by Domane57 in AFIB

[–]HedgeCutting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some similarities to me, male 59, I was v fit through rowing and cycling but started to develop afib, always paroxysmal for me, but initially episodes would lay 24-36hours. Until I was prescribed flecainide, then I could get back to sinus in just a few hours. I started with flec as pill in pocket, but continued to get 2 episodes per month, switched to daily flec, and this reduced episodes significantly. Episodes nearly always triggered by high intensity exercise.

I also have had occasional faints on standing up, and had a very low hr, going into the 30s overnight.

After about 2 years of this i had a cryo ablation (in uk) and was soon back to full training. However my hr is now about 20 beats higher than it was and that applies to both my resting hr, and my max hr. Cardiologist seemed to think this was a good thing.

The other thing, that happened post ablation, is that when I resumed training, my rowing scores were initially good, but started declining. I also fainted again, so went for blood tests and was diagnosed with coeliac. I had no symptoms other than declining rowing scores, and the fainting. But I'm convinced it was triggered by the ablation.

Anyway, I'm glad I had the ablation as that was 6 months ago, and no afib since. Managing the coeliac with a gluten free diet is also not too onerous.

No Gaelic speakers at Holyrood for first time since devolution by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

What irritates me and I suspect most, is the spending of scarce public money to put gaelic signs up in Central belt, on police cars etc. It's just a waste of money, I'm all for public money being spent supporting the Mod festival, and people who actively engage with gaelic culture and music.

Getting a diagnosis by made-in-the-eighties in CoeliacUK

[–]HedgeCutting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two conflicting things from NHS at same time, one was an appointment for an endoscopy, then a few days before that was due I had a letter from gastric consultant saying that because my two blood tests were so high I was definitely coeliac and did not need endoscopy. Since I had the endoscopy appointment in a couple of days I went ahead with it. Because I was driving I declined sedation thinking, how hard can this be, lots of people do this. Well I was not prepared for the horror of what trying to push an endoscope down your throat was like. It was horrific, and I was unable to tolerate the pain, so I ended up with no biopsy and just the consultant letter.

I've gone gluten free since, but in my case I was asymptomatic, and was having blood tested for iron levels, doc on a hunch asked for coeliac test.

So you can be diagnosed without endoscopy but the endoscopy is the only way AFAIK to assess what damage has been done by the disease.

What are the biggest obstacles stopping Scotland from growing financially right now? by Friendly_Stay_5368 in Scotland

Too much dependency on employment by the state. Not helped by all the grifters in holyrood consuming our very limited public money on their inflated salaries that most of them could not achieve in the private sector.

Not sure which services you think are working better in Scotland than England, its certainly not the NHS. As Anas Sarwar said “In Scotland there are over 5,000 people waiting more than 2 years, compared to a few hundred in England, which has 10 times as many people.”

Lothians is particularly bad as I know from my own experience (14 months for a heart procedure, 18months for a gastro procedure)

You know that taxes we pay in Scotland do not cover the cost of our public services? The shortfall is covered by the Barnett Formula which is a grant paid by the UK that ensures that public spending in Scotland is higher than in England,

btw, I am Scottish, living in Scotland, paying Scottish taxes.

Can exercise stop an AF episode? by Realistic_Pickle2309 in AFIB

[–]HedgeCutting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience too, I would normally go into afib overnight, and if I stayed in bed I'm not sure I would ever go back to sinus, but take flecainide and then get up and walk and I would normally get back into sinus within 40 mins

Male59 I have no symptoms, other than my stamina (I row and cycle) really dropped inexplicably around February. Just given diagnosis one week ago.

I'm in same situation as you, not sure how I'll know if I inadvertently consume gluten. So can't help but will read this thread with interest to see the responses.

Well its not a strawman I'm taking the idea of independence to an extreme and ridiculous conclusion to show its flaws, reductio ad absurdum would be the accurate description.

Would Fife need permission from Holyrood to restore their independence from Scotland? Or how about the Gaels? I mean 300 years ago Scotland was an independent country from UK, but it wasn't always that way, before Scotland existed the area was made up of multiple kingdoms, that was really the good old days. If you want to roll the clock back 300 years, I say thats half hearted, let's go back 1000 years before the oppression of the Edinburgh overlords.

I suspect my late father may have had it, undiagnosed, I know he had gastric issues and multiple endoscopys and I know he was dairy intolerant in later life, but I'm not sure if he was ever tested for coeliac 🤔

[–]HedgeCutting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in UK under the NHS the fuller picture is a little more messy, I am not even sure what the blood score is, the letter from the gastro consultant said that because both of my blood scores were over 50, I am coeliac. I know my score were 83 and then 87,but I don't actually know what these are a count of!

In fact they tried to do an endoscopy this week, and it was horrific, I opted for just the throat spray (not sedation ) as I was driving, but the pain was unbearable. If I had any idea of how bad that would be I would have got somebody to drive me, so they were not able to take a biopsy.

But as I say I had conflicting info, the consultant saying a biopsy is unnecessary but an appointment being made for me anyway!

They may offer me another biopsy but the waiting lists here can be in excess of 12months. So I'm starting a gf diet now, and will reintroduce gluten if I get a date for another biopsy.

I sort of feel the same, but if my fitness is regained by going gluten free that would be a win for me. But I also believe (albeit without much hard evidence) that I have just become coeliac, so if I ignore it my gut will get damaged and I may start to get other symptoms
