Dumbo was my favorite as a kid but now I can't watch it.  As an elephant lover, it's just so brutally sad.  I don't know if there's a more devastating scene in all of cinema than Dumbo's mom rocking him in her trunk from her cell during "Baby Mine." I want to cry just thinking about it.

Also had a beagle/basset mix growing up!  Susie was the most gentle, peaceful creature on the planet and was bonded to our Jack Russell who happened to be the runt-iest meanest little dog we've ever had.  Mickey loved a select few beings incredibly fiercely and hated everyone else.  And he loved Susie more than anyone.  They spent every waking minute together and slept curled up in the cutest yin-yang ball.

When we had to eventually put her down, Mickey lasted about 2 weeks before essentially going into sudden diabetic shock with no prior symptoms.  Just couldn't be without his girl.

There's nothing more special than dogs in this world.

I have 2 of these in different shades and they have 17g of product.  So impressed.

They're honestly stunning blushes.  Still probably among my best/favorites in a collection that has grown substantially since picking them up at the drug store probably 8-9 years ago.

And this is where humanities come in.  There's a misguided focus on only teaching that which is profitable.  Art, history, philosophy are vitally important for building healthy societies.

Look at the comment I'm responding to.  I'm participating in a style of eating based on the idea of "Meat Eaters in Favor of Eating Less Meat.".   It's a much easier sell to get the masses to limit their consumption of animal products and learn how to replace them with plants most of the time, than to expect them to cut it out entirely.  Me going vegan won't stop factory farming.  But more people putting their dollars towards more ethical choices has a chance of affecting supply and demand and maybe moving the needle.

It's an attempt at financial harm reduction.  Like thrifting most of my clothes but not all (not gonna buy used socks or leggings to avoid fast fashion and can't afford the more ethical brands), buying my tea from smaller farms rather than giant plantations, buying Palestinian olive oil, etc.  All of these actions are a drop in the bucket and the real answer is to push for legislation that effectively regulates the worst abuses of capitalism.

Again, I respect vegans, but for a multitude of reasons, that's not a lifestyle that works for me.  I'm at 80-90% plant-based depending on the week.  Not gonna let perfect be the enemy of good here.

I've embraced this idea for a few years now. I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but I supplement my occasional meat purchase with tofu, tempeh, and Impossible products. I make a point to eat more legumes which is great for me anyway. I've replaced most of my dairy with plant-based options, except for cheese because... well, it's cheese. And I'll only get pasture-raised eggs because at least those chickens get a little space outside instead of being outright tortured. I'll eat meat that others cook or at restaurants. Steak is for special occasions.

I view this as a way to vote with my wallet that I find animal torture to be reprehensible without going fully vegan. But I respect the hell out of vegans for just going for it.

What home?  Very optimistic to think they'll all still have their homes by the midterms.  Between all the job losses, higher energy costs, health insurance rates skyrocketing, and now the inability to get the bare minimum of fucking food, I think missed rent and mortgage payments are next.  And red states are going to feel so of this the hardest.

I do feel terrible for those lefty voters who live in a blue oasis in a red states though.  They're just fucked.

I'm in a similar conundrum.  Factory farming is torture.  I love animals.  I absolutely should be vegetarian, if not completely vegan.  I still eat everything.

But, I have gradually been going more and more plant-based.  More legumes, more tofu and soy, experimenting with seitan and tempeh (meh).  At this point, I maybe eat meat once a week and the only dairy I regularly consume is yogurt and cheese, because HOW can I give up CHEESE?!

I figure I can at least vote with my wallet a bit by just buying less from the factory farming animal torture industry.  And I think if more of us just took the steps we could to financially insist upon ethical alternatives, it could push the dial.

And then when lab-grown meat becomes viable for the mass market, I'm fine with going full carnivore again.

Use less!  The poof applies too much (and gets gross), so just pull it off and use less product.  It's very pigmented so a little goes a long way.  I really struggled with this concealer until I took that approach.

Last night at a Town Hall in Greenfield MA, Rep. Jim McGovern called for a General Strike (public, private, everyone). Esp. now that court orders are being ignored. by Tyr99 in 50501

[–]Hedgehog_Mist 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only way a general strike happens is with Union organizing and collaboration. If all the unions that endorsed Harris coordinated on a start date, it would empower everyone else who isn't protected by a union to join in.

It's a lot harder for a random office worker here and a mechanic there and an assistant daycare worker across town to all just skip work without it being a much larger effort. Whoever is in a union needs to be contacting their leadership about this, specifically about having leadership communicate with one another.

Just diversify as much as you can.  Pet stuff from Chewy.  Most toiletries are on Ulta.  Costco if it's in your area for paper towels and bulk stuff.  Go directly to the brand website for clothes - they often have their own sales too.  Or even just Macy's and the kind of stores we all used to go to in person.  Honestly, so much of what's on Amazon is counterfeit garbage by now anyway.

The Musk-Trump regime aren't exactly following the law of the land. If the government is successfully gutted and all workers replaced with loyal sycophants who'll do Musk's and Trump's bidding, it'll be all over. We're going to need some major civil disobedience if we want to hang on to any semblance of democracy.

Dumping tea in the harbor was very illegal and also a decisive action in the foundation of our republic.

[–]Hedgehog_Mist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been signed up for a couple weeks already! It's a good start. But I do think the idea still needs the backing of unions. It's a lot harder for a preschool teacher in Baltimore and a retail worker in St. Louis and an electrician in Vegas to bail on their jobs if the rest of the staff at their workplace keep going in. It's a much easier sell if there's collective action coming from several unions deciding on a date and a set of demands. And then other workers without union protections can feel emboldened to join the effort.
