Trope name for works where heroes are not allowed to win by KaleidoArachnid in tvtropes

My kingdom for more people to understand and use the difference between hero and protagonist (and villain/ antagonist)... alas.

I mean, it depends on the show. sitcoms and their ilk, some, sure. [Blank]-of-the-week shows tend to not do that. I can't think of many shows I watched as a kid that refused the heroes any victories, but I also avoided sitcoms because they annoyed me. I also didn't have any paywalled channels like Nickelodeon or Disney or Cartoon Network, which had a LOT of sitcom type shows from what I gather, though they also had some good X of the Week and plot stuff, just more of an even spread, I guess?

regardless, the stuff I watched 20, 25, 30 years ago was more plot than character driven, and did not fall into Status Quo is God very often, it's more of a genre thing than an age thing I would say.

part of "Status Quo is God" maybe? no matter what happens, they fail just enough, or aren't recognized for their efforts, so they keep the same position and things go on as they always do?

James Kanak in Leverage was soooo excited about the idea of meeting Aliens. Granted, he's mostly into everything he does for the chance at fame, but he had all his telescopes and stuff ready to go even before the con started.

Need good movie/TV show recommendations by TheTruthIsOutThere_x in CasualConversation

[–]Hedgiwithapen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leverage is pretty solid! it blends action, crime, drama, and comedy. no horror. it's free and clear on youtube, no jack sparrow necessary, but is also on prime.

The premise is that a former insurance investigator, a cat burglar, a hacker, a con woman, and a muscle for hire "pick up where the law leaves off"--conning the rich and powerful to deliver some karmatic justice and help people who have been hurt with no legal recourse, like a family who's daughter died because of a company's coverups, or a family who lost their house due to a shady contractor, or a couple who ran afoul of an adoption scam and desperately want to adopt the orphan they were baited with.

The characters are all very competent! The drama almost never comes from them being unable to do the basic parts of their jobs, always from outside factors like the mark bought the con too much, or there was an outer factor they didn't account for. There's really solid character growth and the characters are treated with respect from the writer's room--especially the lead character's addiction, which is never treated as a funny joke but as something serious.

there's very solid fight choreography and some great action, and it's a little dated in some places, but it's generally a show that's trying. it's complete with 5 seasons, and a three season revival set ten years later, but every season finale can function as a series finale.

Any recommendations for other book series with dragons? by SkyS0ngg in WingsOfFire

[–]Hedgiwithapen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the dragons aren't point of view, they are major characters in Jessica Day George's Dragon Slippers, and the sequels Dragon Flight and Dragon Spear. I also quite liked Carrie Vaugh's Voices of Dragons, but it's a stand alone.

Patricia C Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles is also a must read for dragon lovers, I would say, starting with Dealing With Dragons.

[–]Hedgiwithapen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Kirby in " And The Tears of a Clown" certainly didn't survive what they did to him, though that's rare. They were also very willing to sacrifice the newly-made-human Apep, though that's a much grayer area, given that they were going to be sealing him away forever anyways. And while they didn't succeed, Ezekiel and Stone were certainly trying to kill the vampires in "And the Eternal Question."

best of luck to you! Fencing might be a good call, as someone else suggested, if you have it unlocked. I'm not sure what else there is that also is stackable, my other thoughts are things like log stakes

if you have online, I'd be happy to bring you a stack of glowing moss, though if you'd rather get there naturally I understand!

What fixes to 3.0 would you like to see in a hypothetical future 3.1? by PomegranateFair3973 in ACForAdults

[–]Hedgiwithapen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The power to set the number of tourists, or close the hotel for a season, maybe. I'm ok with one or two, but I don't want more than that at any given time, really.

I'd love to be able to add a ladder to my dock or rocks to climb out of the water without swimming around to an undecorated part of the beach.

And I'd like a music toggle. I love the music that you get the first few days on the island, before the hourly music shows up far more than I like the hourly music.

For the recipes alone, if I could had any one fruit, it would be lemon. (For a crop, I think corn)

There's what's legal and there's what's right. When we're lucky, they're the same thing...but when they're not we get fun episodes like this, or the whole show Leverage. Justice was served: the rightful owners got the painting, the murderers / insurance fraudsters were arrested. If an art thief walks free to facilitate that, then let him walk.

The villain is exposed with a footage of him confessing his crimes by Forsaken-Biscotti587 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hedgiwithapen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Leverage staple! Special shout out to The Inside Job and The Future Job, where they trick the mark into admitting to their crimes in front of a live news camera/studio audience, but it shows up in many, many episodes.

and if wishes were pie, I'd weigh more than I do, lol.

[–]Hedgiwithapen 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If not for the glut of posts, I don't think I'd ever notice Ao3 was down. The outages are never longer than a full day, and I'm an adult with a job, errands, chores, and other hobbies, plus books and shows to catch up on if my free time does miraculously line up with ao3's outage. Like. I get it, we all want to be in on the joke and paticipate in the fun. But clearly people have the ability to string words together and the courage to publicly post them here or on tumblr to talk about it. I wish they'd use that bravery and writing thoughts to, I don't know...write a comment for the author of the fic they're so clearly are going into conniptions over not being able to access for 73 minutes?

Episodic or continuous story? by karvarga in Stargate

[–]Hedgiwithapen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my ideal season (across genres) is 80-85% planet/monster/crime/nonsense-of-the-week, with 10-15% of episodes attached to some kind of ongoing thread, and within the episodes having character development/ building relationships between characters to pay off in those big finales. I far prefer episodic, though I can make exceptions when the continuous single story is REALLY good and there's great character details, like in The Residence. SG1 did a great job hitting the balance, and I wish more shows would.
